A factory humanoid robot is a six-figure capital project, not a plug-in appliance. The clearest public benchmark is Agility Robotics’ approximately $125,000 bill of materials (BOM) for a current Digit 4. Agility’s illustrative Digit 5 commercial model reaches roughly $200,000 under its stated assumptions. Its same planning model adds about $15,000 for deployment and about $15,000 per year for software and maintenance.

Those figures are vendor-specific planning inputs, not universal list prices. Figure 02 and Apptronik Apollo have no public purchase prices in the cited BMW, Figure and Mercedes-Benz materials. Your budget must therefore include site engineering, safety changes, integration, training, commissioning, support terms, spare capacity and operating risk in addition to the robot itself.

What the public evidence says a humanoid robot costs

Only Agility Robotics publishes enough public detail to form a transparent factory-budget baseline. Agility Robotics’ 2026 SEC investor presentation puts the current Digit 4 BOM at approximately $125,000. The same presentation includes an illustrative Digit 5 cost curve that approaches roughly $200,000 in modeled commercial economics. The filing labels the chart illustrative and assumption-based, so neither number is a binding quotation or a guaranteed customer price.

Cost item Public figure How to interpret it
Digit 4 robot BOM Approximately $125,000 Agility Robotics, 2026 SEC investor presentation; a component-cost benchmark, not a published retail quote.
Illustrative Digit 5 economics Roughly $200,000 Agility model based on assumptions; not a contract price.
Deployment Approximately $15,000 Agility modeled allowance; actual site work varies by cell and facility.
Software and maintenance Approximately $15,000 per year Agility modeled recurring allowance; contract scope must define what is included.
Figure 02 purchase price Not stated No public purchase price appears in the cited BMW or Figure material.
Apptronik Apollo purchase price Not stated Mercedes-Benz has announced production testing and investment, not a customer price.

For planning, treat the $125,000 figure as the robot hardware line, then build a separate project budget. A quote may bundle hardware, software, support or financing differently, so compare the underlying inclusions rather than headline prices.

Every budget line beyond the robot

Deployment and workcell engineering

Deployment covers the work required to make a machine operate safely and repeatably in a particular station. It can include fixture and gripper adaptation, robot programming, controls integration, network configuration, charging equipment, data collection, operator training and commissioning. Agility’s disclosed model uses approximately $15,000 for deployment, but that is not a universal installation fee.

BMW’s production account shows why a site allowance is essential: its Spartanburg pilot required revised safety concepts, additional barriers and partitions, and improved 5G coverage. The account does not publish a standard price for those changes. Your plant may need guarding, scanners, fencing, floor marking, electrical work or wireless upgrades that never appear in a robot BOM.

Software, service and spare parts

Agility’s modeled recurring allowance is approximately $15,000 annually for software and maintenance. Before accepting a proposal, ask whether that amount includes version updates, cloud or edge compute, remote diagnostics, preventive maintenance visits, parts, batteries, calibration and emergency response. A low annual fee with parts and labor excluded can be more expensive than a higher all-inclusive plan.

Factory systems and data

Humanoids still have to exchange signals with the plant. Budget engineering time for PLC or robot-controller handshakes, manufacturing-execution-system events, barcode or vision data, authentication, logging and cybersecurity review. Define who owns task data and who can access it remotely. If the robot must meet traceability rules, include validation of timestamps, alarms and production records.

Safety, compliance and insurance

Reserve money and schedule for risk assessment, safeguarding, emergency-stop validation, lockout procedures, worker training and acceptance documentation. A pilot that changes reach, payload, speed or end-effectors may require a new assessment. Insurance, site permits and labor-consultation costs belong in the project budget even when a vendor supplies the robot.

Commissioning, downtime and redundancy

Production trials consume engineering and operator hours. Include factory acceptance testing, site acceptance testing, trial parts, a ramp period and a plan for missed production. A second robot, spare battery or conventional backup process may be justified where one station is a bottleneck. No universal downtime or energy figure is publicly established by the cited sources, so use measured data from your own pilot rather than an assumed percentage.

How to build a defensible factory budget

  1. Define the task and success metric. Specify the part, cycle time, payload, reach, presentation, error tolerance, shifts and target hours. “Automate material handling” is too vague for a reliable quote.
  2. Separate one-time and recurring costs. Put hardware, end-effectors, cell changes, integration and training in the one-time section. Put software subscriptions, maintenance, connectivity, consumables and support in the recurring section.
  3. Survey the site. Document floor loading, aisle widths, lighting, wireless coverage, charging location, guarding, emergency circuits and interfaces to the existing controls. Record every modification required for the pilot.
  4. Request an itemized proposal. Require line items for robot, batteries, end-effectors, fixtures, installation, programming, validation, training, travel, taxes, shipping and spare parts. Ask vendors to identify assumptions and exclusions.
  5. Price the acceptance phase. Define who supplies test parts, what constitutes a passing cycle, how many consecutive cycles are required and what happens when the target is missed. Tie final payment or service start to documented acceptance.
  6. Model recurring operations. Add annual software and maintenance, replacement parts, calibration, network service, electricity metering and internal labor. Show costs for years one through five so a low initial quote cannot hide a high service burden.
  7. Value production risk. Estimate the cost of a stopped line, delayed orders, overtime and manual fallback. Keep a contingency for redesign if the robot cannot handle variation in parts or presentation.

A simple five-year worksheet can use this structure: five-year total cost = hardware + deployment and cell work + commissioning and training + five years of software and maintenance + spares and support + financing or lease charges + risk reserve. Replace each term with quoted, site-specific values; do not treat the illustrative Agility curve as your final total.

What is known about the leading factory examples

System or program Publicly documented facts Price status
Agility Digit 4 Approximately $125,000 current BOM in Agility’s 2026 SEC presentation. No universal customer list price stated.
Agility Digit 5 model Illustrative cost curve reaches roughly $200,000 in modeled commercial economics. Assumption-based model, not a quotation.
Figure 02 at BMW BMW describes a robot about 170 cm tall and 70 kg with a 20 kg load capacity. A 2024 trial lasted several weeks and inserted sheet-metal parts into fixtures for chassis assembly. Purchase price not publicly stated.
Figure 02 at Spartanburg BMW’s 2026 account reports support for more than 30,000 BMW X3s over ten months, movement of more than 90,000 components and about 1,250 operating hours on ten-hour shifts, five days a week. Reported deployment results, not a guaranteed throughput or price.
Apptronik Apollo at Mercedes-Benz Mercedes-Benz says it is testing Apollo in production and announced a low-double-digit-million-euro investment in Apptronik. The investment is corporate financing, not Apollo’s customer price.

The BMW figures demonstrate that sustained factory operation is possible in at least one reported deployment. They do not establish that another plant will achieve the same availability, cycle time, labor savings or payback. Differences in parts, shifts, safety rules, network quality and operator support can dominate the economics.

Purchase, lease or robot-as-a-service

Ask for at least two commercial structures. In a purchase, your company normally pays for the asset and separately negotiates software, maintenance and upgrades. Clarify warranty duration, battery replacement, ownership of improvements, decommissioning and resale or transfer rights.

In a lease or robot-as-a-service (RaaS) arrangement, the provider may retain ownership and charge a monthly or usage-based fee. Agility describes RaaS revenue as recognized over the robot’s useful life and separately discloses deployment plus annual software and maintenance in its modeled economics. That accounting description does not reveal a standard customer tariff.

Term to compare Questions for the proposal
Monthly charge What is the fixed fee, usage fee or minimum payment, and are taxes, shipping and connectivity included?
Contract term What is the minimum term, renewal rule and early-termination charge?
Uptime service level How is uptime measured, what exclusions apply, and are service credits available?
Support and parts Which labor, travel, batteries, grippers and wear parts are included?
Damage and insurance Who pays after a collision, dropped load or employee-caused damage?
End of term Can you buy the robot, renew, return it or move it to another cell?
Data and software Who owns task data, how are updates approved, and what happens if service ends?

RaaS can reduce upfront capital and let a supplier carry residual-value risk, but a long minimum term can make a failed pilot costly. Compare the five-year cash total and operational obligations, not just the monthly number.

Is a humanoid robot cheaper than a worker?

There is no defensible universal answer from the public figures above. A labor comparison must use the fully loaded cost of the specific job: wages, benefits, overtime, recruiting, training, turnover, supervision, safety exposure and productivity across the actual shifts. Against that, include the robot’s depreciation or service fees, deployment, maintenance, energy, engineering support, downtime, insurance and the people who monitor or reload it.

Use a task-level model rather than comparing a robot price with an hourly wage. Measure successful parts per hour, staffing avoided, changeover time and the percentage of cycles requiring human intervention. Run sensitivity cases for one, two and three shifts; a robot used only during a short shift carries its fixed cost for fewer productive hours. Include a manual fallback because a robot that stops the line can erase an apparent labor saving.

Deployment sequence and common failure points

1. Choose a constrained first cell

Start with a repetitive task that has stable part presentation, clear safety boundaries and a measurable output. Avoid a station whose success depends on many unstructured decisions until perception and recovery behavior are proven.

2. Test the real variation

Provide production parts, packaging, tolerances, lighting conditions and damaged-piece examples. A demonstration with ideal parts cannot validate a factory budget.

3. Engineer the interface

Adapt fixtures and end-effectors, map signals to the plant controls and verify charging and network coverage. Document every change so its cost is visible when comparing vendors.

4. Validate safety and recovery

Test emergency stops, protective devices, restart behavior, human entry, dropped loads and loss of communications. Train operators on clearing faults without bypassing safeguards.

5. Run a measured pilot

Track cycle time, first-pass yield, intervention minutes, unplanned stops, charge time, maintenance events and operator hours. Keep the definitions constant throughout the trial.

6. Decide on scale-up

Only after acceptance should you extrapolate to more cells or shifts. Re-price duplicated infrastructure, service staffing and spare capacity; the second deployment may not have the same engineering cost as the first, but it will not be free.

Budgeting mistakes to avoid

  • Using a corporate investment as a product price. Mercedes-Benz’s low-double-digit-million-euro investment in Apptronik is financing, not the price of an Apollo unit.
  • Treating a BOM as a quotation. The Agility figures are disclosed benchmarks and an illustrative model; commercial terms can add integration, margin, logistics and support.
  • Ignoring site changes. BMW’s barriers, partitions and 5G improvements show that safety and communications work can sit outside the robot hardware.
  • Assuming a pilot proves payback. Reported BMW operating hours and component counts describe that deployment, not a guarantee for your line.
  • Leaving support undefined. “Maintenance included” is incomplete unless parts, response times, software updates and travel are specified.
  • Buying before defining acceptance. Without a measurable pass condition, a project can be technically complete while failing to deliver production value.
