A continuous 1080p30 H.264 video stream at YouTube’s recommended 10 Mbps uses about 3.24 decimal TB of video payload in 30 days, before audio and transport overhead. That makes the plan’s base price a starting point, not a reliable total for this workload.
Estimate the data transfer before choosing a VPS
A VPS price pays for the virtual server; it does not necessarily cover all the outgoing data needed to stream continuously. Compare the allowance for the exact server region against your stream’s bitrate, then check the provider’s overage terms. The estimate below assumes a constant bitrate for 30 days and uses decimal gigabytes and terabytes.

Calculate monthly video payload
At a constant bitrate, approximate payload is 10.8 GB per day for each 1 Mbps, or 324 GB per Mbps over 30 days. YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends 10 Mbps for H.264 video at 1080p and 30 fps, which works out to approximately 3,240 GB (3.24 TB) of video payload for 30 days. This is a calculation from the recommended bitrate, not a measurement of a VPS bill. Audio and transport overhead add to the data sent.
YouTube’s recommended bitrate is guidance for the video encoder, not a guarantee that every VPS plan or network path can sustain the stream. YouTube recommends testing the setup and monitoring stream health.

What the Lightsail examples show
Amazon Web Services’ Lightsail pricing page lists these Linux/Unix bundles and says Mumbai-region bundles receive half the listed transfer allowance. The prices below are the listed monthly base prices in the page’s stated currency; they are not converted to rupees and do not include a calculated overage or GST.

The comparison is with video payload alone. It does not include audio or transport overhead, and it does not calculate a final bill. Lightsail says both inbound and outbound transfer count toward the allowance, while only outbound traffic over the allowance is billed. The pricing information cited here does not establish a Mumbai-specific overage amount, so do not infer one from the base plan price.
Build your own all-in estimate
- Pick the actual region and plan. Use that region’s transfer allowance, not a general allowance from a different location. For Lightsail, apply its stated half-allowance rule for Mumbai.
- Estimate stream traffic. Multiply the video bitrate in Mbps by 324 GB for a 30-day estimate. Add room for audio and transport overhead, and account for other traffic that shares the allowance.
- Check the overage rule and rate. Confirm what counts toward the quota, what is billed after it, and the applicable rate for the region and plan. Do not treat included transfer as the same thing as an unlimited stream.
- Add applicable tax. Use the provider’s terms for your customer location and account setup. The amount collected on an invoice can differ depending on GSTIN status and reverse-charge treatment.
- Account for administration and recovery. A self-managed VPS also means configuring the sender, monitoring the stream, and deciding how it will restart after a process, server, or connection failure.
In short, express the expected monthly cost as base plan + billable transfer overage + applicable tax. Without the region, actual bitrate, overage rate, GSTIN status, and invoicing entity, a precise rupee total would be misleading.
How GST can appear on an Indian VPS bill
GST treatment depends on the provider and the customer’s account and tax details. AWS says AWS India applies GST to cloud services sold to Indian customers: its tax page states 18% IGST for customers outside Delhi, and 9% CGST plus 9% SGST for customers in Delhi. AWS last updated that page in March 2026.

DigitalOcean states an 18% GST rate for customers with an India tax location. It also says a business that adds a valid GSTIN is not charged GST on its invoice and remains responsible under the reverse charge mechanism. DigitalOcean marked its tax information last verified on 22 June 2026. These are provider-specific descriptions, not personal tax advice; confirm the tax treatment on your own invoice and with a qualified adviser if needed.
Can a cheap VPS run a 24/7 stream?
It can be part of a do-it-yourself setup, but a low monthly compute price by itself does not establish that a plan can carry the stream reliably. The workload matters: looping or forwarding an already encoded video is different from decoding and re-encoding video on the VPS. Check that the server and network can sustain the chosen output, and test before relying on it for a continuous broadcast.

YouTube’s live-encoder guidance says, “We recommend running a speed test to test your upload bitrate,” and “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” The National Informatics Centre’s checklist gives a 2–4 Mbps per-stream dedicated-bandwidth requirement for its described webcast scenario; that is not YouTube’s bitrate recommendation.
