For US players, Nintendo Switch Online is the cheapest way to get online multiplayer: the individual annual plan is $19.99. PlayStation Plus Essential costs $79.99 per year, while Xbox Game Pass pricing is primarily monthly, with Ultimate at $22.99 and PC Game Pass at $13.99 after Microsoft’s April 21, 2026 update. The better value depends on whether you need only multiplayer, a large rotating library, classic Nintendo games, cloud play, or access across several devices.

What each subscription costs when you pay annually
PlayStation publishes both monthly and longer-term prices, making the annual trade-off easy to calculate. Paying for 12 separate months would cost $131.88 for Essential, $203.88 for Extra and $239.88 for Premium. The annual prices reduce those totals to $79.99, $134.99 and $159.99 respectively. PlayStation describes those 12-month plans as discounted by 39% for Essential and 33% for Extra and Premium.

|---|---|---|---|
| Essential | $131.88 | $79.99 | About $6.67 |
| Extra | $203.88 | $134.99 | About $11.25 |
| Premium | $239.88 | $159.99 | About $13.33 |
Nintendo’s individual plan is even cheaper for a light user: four three-month purchases total $31.96, while the annual membership is $19.99. The family membership is $34.99 per year. Nintendo’s official overview says that with eight people, the standard Family Membership works out to less than $5 per person per year; dividing $34.99 among eight account holders gives about $4.37. The $79.99 Expansion Pack family plan is a separate, higher-priced tier and works out to about $10 per person for eight users.
Microsoft’s cited 2026 announcement presents Ultimate and PC Game Pass as monthly prices rather than annual US subscriptions. At uninterrupted monthly rates, Ultimate would total $275.88 over 12 months, PC Game Pass $167.88 and the $14.99 Premium figure from the cloud-gaming guide $179.88. Those are arithmetic comparisons, not an advertised annual billing option.
PlayStation Plus: three levels built around PlayStation consoles
Essential is the multiplayer baseline
Essential is the relevant comparison for someone who owns a PlayStation and mainly needs online multiplayer. It also supplies monthly games, cloud storage, Share Play, discounts and exclusive content. The $79.99 annual price is the figure to compare with Nintendo’s $19.99 individual annual plan when multiplayer is the only requirement.

Extra adds a downloadable catalog
Extra includes everything in Essential and adds the Game Catalog plus Ubisoft+ Classics. It is aimed at players who want a rotating library to download rather than buying every game separately. The catalog is not a permanent ownership list: availability can change, so a game in the catalog today is not guaranteed to remain there for the life of a subscription.
Premium adds classics, trials and streaming
Premium adds the Classics Catalog, game trials and cloud streaming to Extra. It costs $159.99 for 12 months, or about $13.33 per month when paid annually. Choose it for those specific features; the annual price alone does not make it the cheapest route to multiplayer.
Important catalog timing
PlayStation says PS4 games are added only intermittently from January 2026. That means Extra and Premium should not be judged by an expectation of a fixed monthly flow of PS4 additions. The catalog changes over time, and the current lineup matters more than a historical list.

Xbox Game Pass: the broadest device coverage, but a less simple price list
Ultimate at $22.99 per month
Microsoft’s April 21, 2026 update says Game Pass Ultimate dropped from $29.99 to $22.99 a month. The tier combines hundreds of console and PC games, online console multiplayer, unlimited cloud gaming, in-game benefits and major day-one releases. It is the clearest option for households that use both Xbox and PC or want to stream supported games instead of installing them.

Ultimate’s day-one promise still has an important qualification. Microsoft’s 2026 update says future Call of Duty games will arrive around the following holiday season rather than at launch. Do not interpret “major day-one releases” as a guarantee that every major franchise, or every future Call of Duty title, appears on release day.
PC Game Pass at $13.99 per month
PC Game Pass is listed at $13.99 per month after the same April 2026 update. It is the price to examine if you play exclusively on PC and do not need console multiplayer. The cited update does not provide a 12-month US price, so an annual total is only the monthly-rate calculation of $167.88.

Premium at $14.99 in the cloud-gaming guide
Microsoft’s cloud-gaming guide lists Game Pass Premium at $14.99 per month and describes 200-plus games across console, PC and supported devices. Because that guide is dated 2025 while the major price update is from 2026, treat the name, availability and current price as storefront details to verify. The cited material does not establish every Premium benefit, including whether a particular regional listing includes online console multiplayer.
Why Xbox comparisons need a live-store check
The cited Xbox update focuses on Ultimate and PC Game Pass, not a complete table of every lower-cost online-multiplayer tier. Therefore, it is not safe to declare an Xbox “cheapest plan” from the figures above. Check the Xbox store for your country, the exact tier name and whether console multiplayer is included before comparing it with Nintendo Switch Online or PlayStation Essential.

Individual membership
The standard individual plan costs $3.99 for one month, $7.99 for three months or $19.99 for 12 months. The annual option is the lowest listed US price for online multiplayer among the three platforms covered here. It is the practical choice when you own one Switch account and do not need Nintendo’s expanded classic libraries.
Best Value
- Redeem for anything on PlayStationStore: games, add-ons, PlayStationPlus and more.
- Everything you want to play. Choose from the largest library of PlayStation content.
- Use gift card funds to contribute towards PlayStationPlus memberships.
Family membership
The standard Family Membership costs $34.99 annually. Nintendo’s official wording refers to a family group, and its eight-person example produces the sub-$5-per-person figure. The value depends on having eligible people to share the membership with; it is not an $4.37 individual plan sold to one account.
Expansion Pack
Expansion Pack costs $49.99 annually for one individual or $79.99 annually for a family group. It adds Nintendo 64, Game Boy Advance, Sega Genesis and other classic libraries, along with selected downloadable content such as Animal Crossing: New Horizons – Happy Home Paradise and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe – Booster Course Pass. Those additions explain the $30 premium over the standard individual annual plan and the $45 premium over the standard family plan; buy it for the specific libraries or DLC, not merely for multiplayer.

How to decide what you are actually paying for
Choose Nintendo when the access fee is the priority
Nintendo is the clear price leader for a single annual multiplayer membership in this snapshot. Standard Switch Online also makes sense for a group that can legitimately use a family membership. Expansion Pack becomes rational only when its classic-game libraries or included DLC would otherwise cost you more than the $30 individual or $45 family upgrade.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Choose PlayStation Extra or Premium for a console catalog
Extra is the middle ground for downloading games from a changing PlayStation library. Premium costs $25 more per year than Extra and adds classics, trials and streaming. If you never use those additions, Essential’s multiplayer, monthly games, storage and Share Play benefits make the lower tier easier to justify.
Choose Xbox Ultimate for mixed-device households
Ultimate carries the highest clearly stated monthly price here, but it bundles console, PC and cloud access rather than serving only one device. Its value improves when multiple people in a household use different supported platforms or when day-one releases and cloud gaming replace separate purchases. The Call of Duty timing exception means a buyer should check each release’s stated availability instead of assuming every franchise arrives on launch day.
Practical checks before subscribing
- Confirm that the displayed currency is US dollars and that the billing period is monthly, three-month or annual.
- For Xbox, verify the exact tier name and current regional price because Microsoft changed plans and prices during 2025–2026.
- For Nintendo, decide between an individual account and a family group before selecting the standard or Expansion Pack tier.
- For PlayStation, check the current Game Catalog and Classics Catalog if a particular game is the reason you are subscribing; catalogs change.
- Do not treat a monthly price multiplied by 12 as proof that an annual prepaid option exists. Microsoft’s cited figures are monthly, while PlayStation and Nintendo publish explicit annual prices.
- Separate multiplayer access from library access: the cheapest plan that lets you play online is not necessarily the plan with the games, classics, DLC or streaming features you want.
Bottom line
For the lowest listed US multiplayer cost, Nintendo Switch Online wins at $19.99 per year for an individual, or $34.99 for a standard family membership. PlayStation Plus offers clear annual savings, with Essential at $79.99 and Extra and Premium adding progressively larger catalogs and features. Xbox Game Pass Ultimate costs $22.99 per month and is the broadest cross-device package, but Xbox’s lower-tier and annual comparisons require a live regional-store check. The right subscription is therefore determined less by the headline price than by your platform, devices, household sharing needs and whether you will use the included catalog, classics, DLC or cloud gaming.
