For a one-week trip, a light user will usually start around 2–5 GB, a moderate user around 5–15 GB, and a heavy user around 10–40 GB. Those are provider-published planning ranges, not a universal standard. Your actual requirement depends on daily video use, navigation, calls, cloud syncing, hotspot sharing, trip length, and access to reliable Wi-Fi.
One-week travel eSIM data ranges
The clearest way to size a travel eSIM is to match the allowance to your behavior rather than choose a round number. The following figures come from two 2026 provider guides and illustrate why recommendations vary.

| Usage profile | Orange Travel guidance | Vodafone Travel guidance | What the profile generally means |
|---|---|---|---|
| Light | About 2 GB for one week | About 3–5 GB for one week | Messaging, occasional maps, light browsing, and mostly Wi-Fi |
| Moderate | About 5 GB for one week | About 8–15 GB for one week | Daily navigation and social media, some photos, music, or short video |
| Heavy | About 10 GB for one week | About 20–40 GB for one week | Frequent video, video calls, cloud activity, or hotspot use |
Orange Travel’s figures were reviewed on October 9, 2026. Vodafone Travel published its calculator guidance on August 14, 2026. Both providers describe approximations, not independent measurements of average travelers. A plan at the low end can work if you download content and use hotel or office Wi-Fi; the upper end is safer when mobile video, tethering, or several connected devices are part of the trip.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

Trip length
Every extra day adds another set of navigation, messages, photos, updates, and entertainment. A two-week trip does not automatically need exactly twice as much data because some days will be spent in accommodation or on transport with Wi-Fi, but trip length is still the starting multiplier.

Your apps and settings
Text messaging and ordinary map navigation are relatively small consumers. Short-form video, HD streaming, video calls, automatic photo backup, operating-system updates, and app downloads can consume hundreds of megabytes or several gigabytes in a single session. Video autoplay and high playback quality can turn a moderate plan into a heavy-use plan.
Wi-Fi availability
Reliable accommodation or workplace Wi-Fi can move large transfers off the eSIM. Vodafone Travel estimates that regular reliable Wi-Fi may reduce expected mobile use by 30%–50%; that is the provider’s estimate, not a guaranteed saving. Public Wi-Fi that is intermittent, congested, or unavailable when you need maps should not be counted as your only safety margin.
Hotspot and cloud use
Sharing a connection with a laptop, tablet, or travel companion adds the other device’s traffic to your allowance. A computer may check email, sync cloud files, download updates, or stream at a higher resolution than a phone. Automatic camera backup has the same effect and is easy to overlook.
How much data common activities use
Published estimates differ by app version, video quality, screen resolution, and settings. Treat the numbers below as planning rates rather than guarantees.

| Activity | Approximate rate | Published by | Planning implication |
|---|---|---|---|
| Messaging | About 5 MB per hour | Orange Travel | Text-only conversations are usually minor; photos, video, and voice notes add more. |
| Map navigation | About 5–10 MB per hour | Vodafone Travel | Live traffic, satellite imagery, and repeated map loading can increase use. |
| Navigation | About 7.5 MB per hour | Orange Travel | This is close to Vodafone’s range and is useful for a rough calculation. |
| General social media | About 150 MB per hour | Orange Travel | Feeds with auto-playing video can be substantially higher. |
| TikTok-style short video | About 500 MB–1 GB per hour | Vodafone Travel | One hour each day can consume roughly 3.5–7 GB in a week. |
| Video streaming | About 480 MB per hour | Orange Travel | Vodafone Travel estimates 1–4 GB per hour for HD streaming, showing how quality changes the result. |
| Video calls | About 300 MB per hour | Orange Travel | Group calls, high resolution, and screen sharing may use more. |
The different video figures are not a contradiction: a lower-resolution stream and an HD stream have very different bit rates. If you do not know your app’s setting, budget toward the higher side and keep a reserve.
Calculate your own allowance
An activity-based estimate is more reliable than choosing a generic package. Use the following process before comparing plans.
- List your daily activities. Estimate hours or fractions of an hour for messaging, navigation, social feeds, streaming, video calls, and hotspot use. Include the days on which you expect the most activity, such as airport transfers or long train journeys.
- Assign a planning rate. Use the activity table above. For a range, calculate both the low and high rate rather than pretending to know the exact amount.
- Multiply by daily duration. For each activity, multiply hours per day by megabytes per hour.
- Multiply by the number of trip days. Convert the total from megabytes to gigabytes using approximately 1,000 MB per GB for a simple travel estimate.
- Adjust for Wi-Fi and offline content. Subtract traffic you will deliberately move to Wi-Fi, such as downloads and backups. Do not subtract Wi-Fi that is merely possible but unreliable.
- Add a reserve. Leave room for unexpected route changes, extra photos, software updates, or a delayed flight. A plan with no reserve is likely to require a top-up at the least convenient time.
Worked example
Suppose a traveler is away for seven days and expects, per day, two hours of messaging, one hour of navigation, one hour of general social media, and 20 minutes of video calling. Using Orange Travel’s approximate rates, the daily estimate is:
- Messaging: 2 × 5 MB = 10 MB
- Navigation: 1 × 7.5 MB = 7.5 MB
- Social media: 1 × 150 MB = 150 MB
- Video calls: one-third of an hour × 300 MB = 100 MB
The total is about 267.5 MB per day, or roughly 1.9 GB for seven days before a reserve. Adding 25% for variation produces about 2.4 GB. That traveler could reasonably look at a 3 GB or 5 GB plan, then choose the larger allowance if social feeds contain frequent video or if Wi-Fi is uncertain. The calculation does not include automatic backups or hotspot traffic; those must be added separately.

Planning for a weekend, two weeks, or a month
Providers publish the clearest comparisons for one week. The table below scales those weekly bands proportionally to help with an initial search. These are planning extrapolations, not separate promises from Orange Travel or Vodafone Travel, and real use may be lower when several days include dependable Wi-Fi.
| Trip length | Light use | Moderate use | Heavy use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Weekend (about 3 days) | About 1–2 GB | About 2–5 GB | About 4–10 GB |
| One week | About 2–5 GB | About 5–15 GB | About 10–40 GB |
| Two weeks | About 4–10 GB | About 10–30 GB | About 20–80 GB |
| One month | About 8–20 GB | About 20–60 GB | About 40–160 GB |
For a month-long trip, monthly accommodation Wi-Fi and a local routine can make the lower end practical. A month of daily HD video, remote work, or hotspot use can exceed the upper end, so calculate those activities directly instead of relying on the table.
Check the plan, not just the gigabytes
Destination and regional coverage
Confirm that every country on your itinerary is covered. A country-specific eSIM may be unsuitable for a multi-country trip, while a regional plan may cost more but avoid a second purchase at the border. Coverage can differ by network and location, including rural areas and islands.
Validity period
Check when validity starts. Some plans begin at installation, while others begin when the eSIM first connects to a supported network. A plan that expires before your return can leave you without data even if its allowance is not exhausted.

High-speed allowance and speed management
Read what happens after the headline allowance. An unlimited label may still include a daily high-speed threshold or traffic management. Vodafone Travel’s Europe page currently describes an unlimited offer with 5 GB of high-speed data per day, followed by speeds of up to 5 Mbps; terms can change. A managed connection may remain adequate for maps and messages but frustrating for video or large uploads.
Hotspot rules
Look for explicit tethering support if you will connect a laptop, tablet, or companion’s phone. Some plans allow hotspot use without restriction; others limit it or exclude it. Do not assume that a phone plan’s data can automatically be shared.
Top-ups and overage behavior
Find out whether you can add data during the trip, how quickly a top-up activates, and whether service stops or slows when the allowance is reached. Vodafone Travel lists top-up options for its Europe eSIM. A top-up option is valuable even when the initial plan is carefully estimated.

Your phone must support eSIM and be unlocked for another network. Check the manufacturer’s compatibility list, install the eSIM while you have Wi-Fi, and keep the activation instructions available offline. Set the travel eSIM as the mobile-data line and disable data roaming on your primary SIM unless you intentionally want to use it. Exact menus vary by phone and operating-system version.

Ways to make an allowance last longer
- Download before departure: save offline maps, playlists, podcasts, films, and language packs over Wi-Fi.
- Restrict background activity: set photo backup, app updates, and cloud-drive synchronization to Wi-Fi only.
- Reduce video demand: turn off autoplay and select a lower playback quality when using mobile data.
- Use offline maps deliberately: download the cities and routes you expect, but remember that live traffic and rerouting still require a connection.
- Control hotspot devices: pause system updates and cloud synchronization on any laptop or tablet you tether.
- Monitor usage: use your phone’s per-app data screen and set a warning below the plan limit.
These steps preserve data without requiring you to stop using essential navigation or communication. Large uploads, operating-system updates, and full-resolution photo backups are best left for trusted Wi-Fi.
What to do if you are running out
- Open the phone’s cellular-data report and identify the largest consumers. Streaming, social video, cloud backup, and hotspot traffic are common causes.
- Switch those apps to Wi-Fi-only background activity, stop autoplay, and lower video quality.
- Download maps and entertainment at your accommodation before the next day.
- Check whether the plan has a top-up or whether speeds have been reduced after a high-speed threshold.
- If you must buy more data, choose a top-up that covers the remaining days rather than repeating the original estimate without reviewing the cause of the overuse.
If the eSIM shows no service despite remaining data, verify that it covers the country you are in, that the eSIM is selected for mobile data, and that data roaming is enabled for the travel line when the provider requires it. Keep your primary line’s roaming setting off if you are avoiding its charges.
Choosing a sensible starting point
For a short city break with offline maps, messaging, and hotel Wi-Fi, 2–3 GB is a reasonable starting search. For a one-week itinerary with daily social media, navigation, and occasional calls, compare 5–10 GB plans. Add more when you stream video, make frequent video calls, back up photos over mobile data, work from a laptop, or share a hotspot. If your estimate falls between plan sizes, the next tier is usually cheaper and less disruptive than an emergency top-up, provided its validity and coverage match the itinerary.
