A 45-minute episode of Grey’s Anatomy can use roughly 0.23 GB to 5.8 GB, depending on the streaming service, device and picture-quality setting. There is no single data amount for the show itself. Estimate an episode with this formula: data used ≈ service’s GB-per-hour rate × (episode minutes ÷ 60). For a 45-minute episode, multiply the hourly figure by 0.75.

Why the same episode can use very different amounts

Streaming services send a video stream, not a fixed “Grey’s Anatomy file.” The stream is selected and adjusted according to several conditions. The title, season and episode length matter, but they are only part of the calculation.

Service and plan settings

Each platform sets its own data targets for low, standard, high-definition and ultra-high-definition playback. A low-data setting may use less than one tenth of a 4K stream for the same episode.

Device and screen

A phone or tablet generally receives a different stream from a smart television. Disney+ publishes separate rates for mobile devices, browsers and TV-connected devices; its automatic 4K HDR television stream is far heavier than its mobile Save Data stream.

Resolution and quality controls

SD, 720p, 1080p and 4K describe progressively larger pictures. Higher resolution normally requires more bits per second. High-motion scenes, dark gradients and other complex images can also require more data within a service’s adaptive range.

Network conditions

Adaptive streaming changes quality when available bandwidth changes. A weak or fluctuating connection can cause a service to move down to a lower stream; a fast, stable connection can allow a higher stream. Therefore a published rate is an estimate or upper target, not a promise that every minute will consume exactly that amount.

Episode duration

Network television dramas often run for different lengths after recaps, openings and credits. Use the actual runtime shown in the app rather than assuming every episode is identical.

Published hourly rates and 45-minute estimates

The following calculations use the rates published by Netflix and Disney+ in their 2026 help information. The 45-minute column is arithmetic from the hourly rate, not a platform measurement of a particular Grey’s Anatomy episode.

“Up to” and “approximately” are important qualifications. These figures describe the services’ published targets under the named settings, while adaptive delivery, device behavior and network overhead can change the actual amount recorded by your provider.

Netflix: from a few hundred megabytes to several gigabytes

Netflix’s 2026 Help Center figures span about 0.3 GB/hour on Low, 0.7 GB/hour on Medium, 1 GB/hour on High SD, 3 GB/hour on High HD and 7 GB/hour on High 4K. Applying the 0.75 factor for 45 minutes produces approximately 0.23, 0.53, 0.75, 2.25 and 5.25 GB respectively.

Netflix also describes mobile behavior in time-per-gigabyte terms. Its Automatic mobile setting allows about four hours of viewing per GB, while Save Data allows about six hours per GB. Those are app guidance figures rather than a guarantee for one episode. They illustrate why a mobile Save Data session can be much smaller than HD or 4K playback.

What that means for a mobile plan

If your phone is set to Netflix High HD, a single 45-minute episode could use around 2.25 GB based on the published hourly target. At Low, the same arithmetic is about 0.23 GB. Check the Netflix app’s cellular-data setting before starting a binge, especially when your plan has a small monthly allowance.

Disney+: device choice changes the estimate dramatically

Disney+ publishes separate 2026 estimates for mobile, browser and television playback, so choosing the device is as important as choosing the quality label.

Mobile playback

On mobile, Disney+ lists approximately 2.5 GB/hour for Wi-Fi-only high quality, 2 GB/hour for Automatic and 0.6 GB/hour for Save Data. A 45-minute episode therefore works out to about 1.88 GB, 1.5 GB and 0.45 GB respectively.

Smart television and TV-connected devices

Disney+ lists approximately 7.7 GB/hour for Automatic 4K HDR on a smart TV or connected TV device. That is about 5.8 GB for 45 minutes. Its Moderate 1080p setting is approximately 2 GB/hour, or 1.5 GB for 45 minutes, while Save Data is approximately 0.7 GB/hour, or about 0.53 GB for 45 minutes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Browser playback

For browser viewing, Disney+ lists approximately 4.2 GB/hour on Automatic 720p and 0.6 GB/hour on Save Data. The corresponding 45-minute estimates are about 3.15 GB and 0.45 GB. A browser estimate should not be substituted for the mobile or television rate when you are planning usage.

Hulu: use the bitrate to build an estimate

Hulu publishes bitrate tiers rather than one guaranteed GB-per-hour number. Its listed tiers are 1.5 Mbps for SD, 3 Mbps for 720p HD, 6 Mbps for 1080p HD and 16 Mbps for 4K Ultra HD. Hulu says quality adapts to available bandwidth and varies by device and content.

For a rough conversion, multiply Mbps by 0.45 to estimate decimal gigabytes per hour before protocol overhead: 1.5 Mbps is about 0.68 GB/hour, 3 Mbps about 1.35 GB/hour, 6 Mbps about 2.7 GB/hour and 16 Mbps about 7.2 GB/hour. A 45-minute episode would therefore be approximately 0.51 GB, 1.01 GB, 2.03 GB or 5.4 GB at those sustained rates. Treat these as calculations from the bitrate tiers, not as guaranteed Hulu totals; adaptive changes and delivery overhead can move the actual number.

How to calculate any episode length

Use the runtime shown on the episode page and the hourly rate for the exact device and setting.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Find the episode’s runtime in minutes. For example, use 52 minutes if that is what your app displays.
  2. Divide the runtime by 60. A 52-minute episode equals 0.867 hours.
  3. Multiply that result by the platform’s published GB-per-hour figure. At 3 GB/hour, 52 minutes is about 2.6 GB.
  4. Allow a margin for adaptive behavior, app overhead and the difference between a published target and your carrier’s measurement.

For a full season, multiply the estimate for one episode by the number of episodes, then add extra allowance for previews, recaps, autoplay and any other video you watch between episodes.

Will one episode use all of your mobile data?

That depends on the size of the allowance and the quality setting. On the published figures, a 45-minute episode at Netflix High HD is about 2.25 GB, while Disney+ mobile Save Data is about 0.45 GB. A 10 GB allowance could therefore cover roughly four Netflix High HD episodes by arithmetic, but substantially more Save Data viewing. This is a planning estimate, not a promise: your other apps, background updates and adaptive changes also count against the allowance.

Television streaming can consume data even faster. A 45-minute Disney+ Automatic 4K HDR session is approximately 5.8 GB, so two episodes could approach 11.6 GB before any other household traffic. On a metered home connection, set a cap or choose a lower-quality mode on the television itself.

Ways to reduce data use without stopping the episode

  1. Choose Save Data on cellular connections. Netflix and Disney+ both publish substantially lower mobile rates for their data-saving modes than for HD or 4K playback.
  2. Do not leave a television in automatic 4K when the connection is metered. On Disney+, Moderate 1080p or Save Data has a much lower published rate than Automatic 4K HDR.
  3. Download over Wi-Fi when the app and title allow it. The download still occupies storage and uses data once, but it prevents repeated cellular streaming during playback.
  4. Check the receiving device before pressing Play. A browser tab, phone app and smart TV can use different service rates even when the account and episode are the same.
  5. Watch the carrier’s usage meter after one episode. Compare the measured increase with your estimate, then adjust the setting if the real-world result is higher than your budget.

Why your bill may not match the estimate

  • Adaptive quality: the service may switch between streams as bandwidth changes.
  • Non-video traffic: app updates, cloud backups and other devices share the same connection or mobile allowance.
  • Measurement units: providers commonly report decimal gigabytes, while some device counters use different byte conventions or round values.
  • Playback extras: trailers, previews, autoplay and repeated sections add minutes beyond the nominal episode runtime.
  • Device limits: a screen may not support 4K, or an app may select a different maximum quality than the account setting suggests.

For the closest personal figure, record the data counter immediately before and after one complete episode under your normal conditions. Use that observation for future planning, while keeping the service’s published rate as a useful upper-range reference.

Where Grey’s Anatomy is available

Catalog rights are regional and can change. A 2023 Catalan Film Agency report listed Grey’s Anatomy on Disney+ in Italy, which demonstrates availability in that market at that time rather than a universal current catalog. Search the local catalog for your country before relying on any service-specific estimate. If the show is offered through a different service in your region, use that service’s data setting and hourly or bitrate guidance instead.

The practical answer

There is no fixed data charge attached to Grey’s Anatomy. For a 45-minute episode, published examples range from about 0.23 GB on Netflix Low to about 5.8 GB on Disney+ Automatic 4K HDR for a TV-connected device. Select the service, device and quality mode first, then multiply the relevant hourly rate by the episode’s minutes divided by 60. Save Data is the most reliable starting point for a limited mobile plan; HD and especially 4K should be treated as multi-gigabyte viewing.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
