How Much Bandwidth Does a VPS Need for a 24/7 YouTube Livestream?

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Plan for a VPS to sustain at least your YouTube encoder’s upload bitrate, with operating margin, and allow roughly 10.8 GB of outbound transfer per month for every 1 Mbps streamed continuously over 30 days. For example, a constant 6 Mbps stream uses about 65 GB and a 10 Mbps stream about 108 GB, before overhead, reconnects, and other server traffic. There is no universal VPS headroom multiplier: verify sustained egress and the plan’s transfer and billing terms.

Throughput and monthly transfer are different requirements

For throughput, the VPS must continuously send the encoder’s target bitrate to YouTube. Leave room for protocol overhead and fluctuations, and test the actual VPS route: a headline port speed alone does not show that the server can sustain a reliable upload.

Monthly transfer is the total outbound data allowed by the VPS plan. A stream can have enough moment-to-moment upload capacity yet exceed its monthly quota. Check how the provider measures transfer and whether exceeding the allowance leads to charges, throttling, or another restriction.

YouTube transcodes a live stream into multiple output formats for viewers, so the VPS sends the source stream to YouTube; its upload is not the ingest bitrate multiplied by the number of viewers. YouTube explains its live-stream transcoding and recommends testing upload bitrate.

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Estimate monthly transfer from your stream bitrate

For a constant stream over a 30-day month, the estimate is bitrate in Mbps × 2,592,000 seconds ÷ 8 bits per byte ÷ 1,000,000,000 bytes per decimal GB. That works out to approximately 10.8 GB per Mbps per month.

Continuous bitrate Approximate 30-day transfer
1 Mbps 10.8 GB
6 Mbps 64.8 GB (about 65 GB)
10 Mbps 108 GB

These are arithmetic estimates, not YouTube or provider-published usage figures. Actual billable transfer can vary with protocol overhead, restarts, background traffic, and a provider’s measurement conventions. Add margin rather than treating the estimate as an exact quota target.

Choose the bitrate for the actual video format

YouTube’s official encoder guidance lists recommendations by codec, resolution, and frame rate. These H.264 and AV1 or H.265/HEVC examples show why you should use the matching row for your stream instead of choosing a bitrate from resolution alone.

Format Codec YouTube-recommended bitrate Approximate transfer over 30 days
720p30 H.264 8 Mbps 86.4 GB
720p60 H.264 8 Mbps 86.4 GB
1080p30 H.264 14 Mbps 151.2 GB
1080p60 H.264 17 Mbps 183.6 GB
720p30 AV1 or H.265/HEVC 6 Mbps 64.8 GB
720p60 AV1 or H.265/HEVC 6 Mbps 64.8 GB
1080p30 AV1 or H.265/HEVC 10 Mbps 108 GB
1080p60 AV1 or H.265/HEVC 12 Mbps 129.6 GB

Transfer values in the table are calculated estimates for a constant stream across 30 days, not figures published by YouTube. YouTube’s encoder settings page does not state a publication year for its current guidance; check the live table when setting up a stream. See YouTube’s current bitrate and encoder settings.

Check the VPS plan before committing

  1. Set the stream format. Choose the intended resolution, frame rate, and codec, then use YouTube’s matching recommended bitrate.
  2. Estimate monthly egress. Multiply the bitrate by approximately 10.8 GB for a 30-day estimate. Include margin for overhead, restarts, and other server traffic.
  3. Check sustained upload. Confirm that the VPS can sustain the stream rate on its actual network route. A port or link-speed headline is not a guarantee of dependable sustained egress.
  4. Read the transfer terms. Verify the monthly outbound allowance, whether it is pooled or per instance, how usage is counted, and what happens if you exceed it. Provider rules differ: DigitalOcean documents pooled Droplet transfer allowances and overage billing, while Amazon Lightsail documents instance transfer allowances and charges for excess outbound transfer. These are examples, not a substitute for checking the current terms of the plan and region you intend to use.
  5. Configure and test the encoder. Use YouTube-supported RTMP or RTMPS ingestion. YouTube recommends CBR, a two-second keyframe interval (not over four seconds), and RTMPS for encrypted streaming. Test with representative audio and motion, run an upload speed test, and monitor stream health.

Test the setup and diagnose common problems

YouTube recommends running a speed test to test upload bitrate. Test the complete setup with content similar to the real stream, then monitor YouTube’s stream health while it runs. A short test may not reveal a VPS route or transfer limit that becomes a problem over a continuous 24/7 broadcast.

  • Stream health reports unstable upload or dropped frames: check sustained VPS egress on the route to YouTube, encoder bitrate, and other server traffic. A port-speed figure by itself does not confirm stable throughput.
  • The VPS is uploading reliably, but the monthly allowance is running low: compare actual outbound usage with the bitrate-based estimate and review how the provider counts transfer, including pooled allowances and overage terms.
  • Transfer usage is higher than the estimate: account for protocol overhead, restarts, and background traffic; provider measurement conventions can also differ from the decimal-GB calculation.
  • You are unsure whether the bitrate is appropriate: check the current YouTube table for the exact codec, resolution, and frame rate, and test again with representative content.
