Spend one when it completes a deck or play goal you are ready to use, after checking the in-client rarity cost, copies still needed, and format legality. There is no evidence for a universal rule such as “always save rares” or “spend immediately.”
This guide explains how to earn wildcards, redeem them safely, account for reprints and duplicate protection, and decide whether crafting now is better than waiting for packs or rewards.

What an MTG Arena wildcard is
Wizards of the Coast defines a wildcard as “a card that can be redeemed for another card of the same rarity.” Arena has four wildcard rarities: common, uncommon, rare and mythic rare. A rare wildcard cannot be converted into a mythic rare, and a mythic wildcard cannot be exchanged for several lower-rarity cards.
The wildcard icon in the client shows your current balance. The card you receive is added to your collection immediately, so crafting is the way to obtain a specific card when opening random packs is too uncertain. The card’s Arena rarity—not merely the artwork or set symbol you are viewing—determines which wildcard is required.

How do you get wildcards?
Wildcards appear in booster-pack rewards, and Wizards’ getting-started guide also describes progress through play and collection rewards. The exact odds and reward-track contents can change, so use the current Reward Distribution & Drop Rates page and the client’s reward display for live details rather than assuming a fixed number of wildcards per pack.
Booster packs and reward tracks
Opening packs can award individual cards and wildcard progress. Store packs, Golden Packs and Limited-event packs do not share identical contents or duplicate rules. A pack is therefore a possible route to a wildcard or to the card you need, not a guaranteed substitute for crafting it.
- Store and reward packs: follow the reward structure shown for that product and set.
- Golden Packs: have their own rare/mythic contents and replacement rules; historical details are described below.
- Draft and Sealed packs: are 14-card Limited packs and have special duplicate-protection exceptions.
The Vault
Fifth and later copies of commons and uncommons do not simply become extra wildcards. Instead, they add Vault Progress Points under the published rules:
Rank #2
- Includes a mix of AT LEAST 25 Rares/Uncommons which is half of the cards.
- Absolutely NO... Basic lands, Foreign, or silver/gold bordered cards.
- Some may contain Foils or Mythics but not all.
- Sets can range from Beta to the current Magic the Gathering set.
- Mint/Excellent condition only.
| Duplicate received | Vault progress |
|---|---|
| Fifth or later common | 1 Vault Progress Point |
| Fifth or later uncommon | 3 Vault Progress Points |
The Vault opens at 1,000 Vault Progress Points. Its listed award is 1 mythic rare wildcard, 2 rare wildcards and 3 uncommon wildcards. Wizards says the Vault remains hidden in the interface until it has filled; the progress is still accumulating even when no Vault meter is visible. These figures are published on the official reward page accessed in 2026: Reward Distribution & Drop Rates.
Those fifth-copy inputs are common and uncommon duplicates only. Do not interpret Vault progress as a direct way to receive common or mythic cards from a fifth copy; the reward is the wildcard bundle listed above.
How do you use wildcards?
Arena supports several crafting paths. The result is the same: the selected card is added to your collection and the matching-rarity wildcard is consumed.
- Craft from your collection: open the collection, select a card, and turn on Not Collected to display cards you do not own. Choose the card and confirm the craft prompt.
- Craft while editing a deck: add the missing card to a deck. When Arena offers to craft it, review the prompt and accept only if the card, rarity and quantity are correct.
- Craft all missing cards in an imported deck: import the list, use Craft All, and inspect the total before confirming. This is useful for a complete list but can spend several high-rarity wildcards at once.
These workflows are documented in the official Arena getting-started guide. If the client shows a different cost from what you expected, stop and inspect the card’s reprint and collection information rather than confirming blindly.

Why the card’s displayed printing may not show its real cost
Arena’s reprint implementation uses the lowest wildcard rarity at which a card with that name has appeared on Arena. A special-art or premium-looking version can display a higher rarity while the same card name remains craftable with a lower-rarity wildcard because an earlier Arena printing was common or uncommon.
For example, if a card has ever had a common Arena printing, the same-name card can use a common wildcard even when the version you selected is shown at a higher rarity. Arena also tracks your total copies across eligible printings and avoids asking you to craft more copies than are useful for a playset. The exact behavior and the collection-aware Craft All logic are explained in Wizards’ reprint and card-style improvements article and developer diary.
Practical rule: always trust the craft prompt in the current client. Do not infer wildcard cost from a paper rarity, a set symbol, or the art treatment alone.

1. Name the immediate play goal
Start with a deck you intend to build, test or enter an event with. A wildcard spent to finish a card you will play now has a clear benefit; spending one merely because the balance is available creates an opportunity cost. Wizards documents how to craft specific unowned cards and missing cards from imported lists, but does not prescribe a universal saving policy.
2. Check the current rarity and total cost
Select the card and read the client’s prompt. Confirm whether it costs common, uncommon, rare or mythic rare wildcards, then count the copies still required. A deck list may contain four copies, but you may already own one or more across reprints. Craft only the deficit shown by Arena.
3. Check format legality before paying
Choose the intended format in the deck builder and verify that the card is legal there. Standard and Alchemy rotate as their eligible set pools change. Cards that rotate out can remain legal in nonrotating Arena formats such as Historic, Pioneer and Timeless, subject to each format’s rules. A 2025 rotation announcement cannot establish a named card’s legality in October 2026, so use the current client’s format selector for the final check. The historical rotation explanation is available at Wizards’ rotation article.

Ask whether the packs or rewards you would open are likely to advance the same collection goal. A set pack may contain the card or a wildcard; a Golden Pack has a separate pool; a Limited pack follows different duplicate rules. If the needed card is a specific rare or mythic and you need it for a deck today, crafting provides certainty. If you are still collecting a set and have no immediate play requirement, waiting for relevant packs can produce broader value—but it is not a guaranteed replacement for the wildcard.
Best Value
- Reprints, fun sketch cards, fetch lands and much more!
- 15 cards per pack.
5. Consider how long the card will matter
For a rotating format, estimate how much play you expect before the card leaves that format. A card with a short remaining window may still be correct if it completes an event-ready deck, while a card that is also useful in a nonrotating format can retain value after rotation. This is a planning consideration, not a promise that any card will remain legal or competitive.
| Question | Craft now is more defensible when… | Waiting is more defensible when… |
|---|---|---|
| Do you have a real deck or event plan? | The card completes a deck you will play immediately. | You are browsing possibilities without a concrete list. |
| How many copies are missing? | The client shows a small, verified deficit. | You have not checked copies across printings. |
| Is the format stable? | The card is legal in your selected format and useful beyond one short event. | Rotation or a legality change is near and you have alternatives. |
| Will packs advance the same goal? | The needed card is specific and random packs are unlikely to solve it in time. | You are opening relevant packs for a broader collection and have no urgent need. |
No published player study establishes an objectively optimal timing rule. “Save all rares,” “spend immediately” and deck-tier formulas are preferences, not official game guidance.

Rare and mythic duplicate protection
Wizards’ Wilds of Eldraine release notes described duplicate protection for rare and mythic reprints, including protection regardless of artwork under that policy. The same notes explicitly excluded 14-card Limited packs opened in Draft and Sealed events. Because later reprint updates changed some behavior, treat that 2023 explanation as historical context and consult the live rules and client for current operation: Wilds of Eldraine Arena release notes and reprint improvements.

Golden Pack replacement order
A September 5, 2023 update described how a Golden Pack handles a fourth-copy rare or mythic duplicate. Under that announcement’s order, Arena checks:
- An eligible card of the same rarity from the same set.
- An eligible card of that rarity from a Standard-legal set.
- An eligible card from an eligible standalone Alchemy set.
- Gems if no eligible card remains: 20 gems for a rare or 40 gems for a mythic.
The same update described Golden Packs as advancing wildcard tracks. Those contents and replacement values were rules stated in that dated announcement, not a guarantee that every future Golden Pack will use identical values. Read the current in-client reward description alongside the September 5, 2023 Golden Pack update.
Quick Recap
Common wildcard mistakes and fixes
- Crafting the wrong rarity: re-open the card and read the prompt; same-name reprints can lower the required rarity.
- Overcrafting a playset: check the owned count across printings and let the deck editor show the remaining quantity.
- Using Craft All without review: inspect every listed card and the total wildcard cost before confirming an imported deck.
- Ignoring rotation: select the exact format and verify legality on the current date.
- Assuming every pack protects duplicates: identify whether it is a store, Golden, Draft or Sealed pack and read its current rules.
- Treating Vault progress as immediate currency: fifth-copy points accumulate toward the 1,000-point Vault threshold; they are not a button that converts each duplicate directly into a wildcard.
A quick pre-confirmation checklist
- Is this card for a named deck, event or testing plan?
- What rarity does the current Arena prompt require?
- How many copies do you own across all Arena printings?
- How many additional copies does the deck actually need?
- Is the card legal in the selected format today?
- Could the specific packs or rewards you plan to open advance the same collection goal?
- Have you reviewed the final wildcard total before pressing Craft or Craft All?
