Mondi says it developed brown-paper packaging with multicolour digital printing and a white underprint for Kärcher’s S 4 Twin Go!Further push sweeper. The design was intended to make the sweeper’s reported recycled-plastic content visible while preserving Kärcher’s colours, small print and barcode legibility. The details come from Mondi’s supplier case study, published 5 October 2026, rather than an independent evaluation.
What the packaging was designed to communicate
The case study concerns the launch of Kärcher’s S 4 Twin Go!Further push sweeper. Mondi reports that plastic components in the sweeper contain 30% recycled material. Kärcher wanted the packaging to convey that product attribute without compromising brand presence, colour reproduction or print quality.

How white underprinting helps print on brown paper
Mondi says it printed multiple colours digitally onto brown paper, adding a white layer beneath the printed artwork. Brown paper affects how colours appear: placing white under selected areas provides a lighter base, helping colours such as Kärcher’s yellow stand out with greater contrast than they would directly on the brown surface.

According to Mondi, the underprint also helps retain detail in small text and graphic elements and supports EAN barcode legibility. The case study does not include print samples, colour measurements or barcode-scan results, so those benefits are the supplier’s description of the project rather than reported test findings.
What digital printing changes about production
Mondi describes the process as computer-to-print, which does not require printing plates. The company says this supports demand-driven production and can help avoid surplus quantities. That is a proposed production benefit, not a measured result for this packaging run: Mondi provides no order quantity, waste data or comparison with a plate-based or other digital method.

For a packaging buyer, the practical questions remain project-specific: required volume, setup and changeover needs, colour consistency across production, small-type and barcode performance, substrate and ink suitability, and total environmental impact. This case study does not compare the approach with flexographic, offset or other digital processes, so it cannot establish which is preferable for a different job.

Mondi says the water-based inks used for the packaging were approved by Swiss Quality Testing Services (SQTS) for use on primary packaging. The announcement does not identify an approval standard, disclose the ink formulation or include supporting test documentation. The statement should therefore be read as Mondi’s account of the approval, not as evidence here of a particular regulatory certification or performance in every packaging application.
