One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchModern cars can collect far more than engine diagnostics. Depending on the vehicle’s hardware, model year, connected subscription, mobile app and your settings, a car may generate location history, driving events, navigation searches, voice recordings, camera-derived information and details about paired phones. That does not mean every vehicle collects all of these categories, or that every manufacturer shares them in the same way.
“Spies” is useful shorthand for connected-vehicle data collection and sharing. The practical question is which data your exact car produces, where it goes, how long it is retained and which features stop working when you restrict it. The checklist after the 12 categories shows how to find those answers in the vehicle, app and account.

What data can a connected car collect?
A connected vehicle usually combines onboard sensors with a cellular telematics unit, navigation system, microphones, cameras, Bluetooth or USB connections and a companion account. The Federal Trade Commission says possible categories include biometric, telematic, geolocation, video and other personal information. Collection depends on equipment and enabled services, so a basic car with no cellular service will expose less than a vehicle with remote-control, navigation, voice and driver-monitoring features.

Privacy terms can be split among the vehicle screen, the connected-service agreement, the phone app and outside providers. Ford’s U.S. policy, for example, says connected services may have product-specific notices and directs owners to the vehicle manual. Read the notice for your trim and model year rather than relying on a brand-wide summary.

The 12 categories below are a map of possible collection points, not a claim that every car uses all 12.
12 ways your car may collect or share information
1. Precise location and route history
A telematics unit or navigation system can create a time-stamped trail of where the vehicle is, where it started and where it stopped. Location records can reveal home and work addresses, visits to medical facilities, religious sites or other sensitive places, as the FTC notes in its discussion of connected-car data. Some systems retain recent trips in the vehicle; others synchronize them to an account or cloud service.
Turn-by-turn navigation may need live location to provide traffic and routing. Remote services may need it to show a vehicle on a map. Ask whether location collection is continuous, event-based or limited to an active feature, and whether deleting a trip on the screen also deletes the server copy.

Vehicle computers can record speed, mileage, time of day, road type and patterns such as hard cornering or frequent short trips. An insurer, fleet program or other service may use a driving score if you enroll, but a manufacturer can also process behavior data for diagnostics, product improvement or connected-service operations.
Do not assume that declining an insurance program stops all driving telemetry; the service and the car may use separate consent settings. The manufacturer should identify which behaviors are collected by default and which require enrollment.
3. Braking, acceleration and crash events
Accelerometers and control modules detect sudden braking, rapid acceleration, stability-control intervention and possible collisions. These events help trigger emergency assistance, reconstruct a fault or improve safety systems. A connected service may transmit an event automatically, while a non-connected car may keep it locally until a technician reads the module.

4. Telematics and vehicle status
The car can report odometer readings, battery or fuel level, tire pressure, fault codes, charging state, door or lock status and maintenance alerts. Remote start, remote lock, charging controls and roadside assistance generally depend on this channel. Status data is often tied to the vehicle identification number and your account.
These reports may be sent periodically or when you open the app. Ask for the retention period and whether service technicians, dealers or analytics providers can access historical status records.
5. Navigation searches and destinations
Addresses entered into the built-in navigation system, points of interest, route choices and saved favorites can disclose appointments, routines and relationships even without a continuous location trail. A navigation provider may process a search to return results, while the manufacturer may store favorites in the vehicle or cloud account.
Use guest mode where available, clear recent destinations and review cloud-synchronization settings. Deleting the in-car list may not remove destinations already associated with the app account.

Read the voice-assistant notice for activation words, recordings, retention and human review. You can often disable the assistant or microphone permission, but that may remove voice navigation and hands-free controls while leaving ordinary phone calls available through a separate setting.
7. Cameras and visual or sensor data
Vehicles equipped with parking cameras, driver-monitoring cameras, cabin cameras or recording systems can produce images, video or derived measurements such as eye position, seat occupancy and lane markings. Some processing occurs locally; other systems upload clips or event metadata for safety and service functions.
Find out which cameras are present, when they activate, whether footage is continuously saved or only retained after an event, and who can retrieve it. A camera indicator or privacy shutter does not necessarily disable every external sensor.
8. Connected phone and device information
Pairing a phone can expose its device identifier, Bluetooth contacts, call history, messages, media metadata and permission status. USB connections may provide similar information to the infotainment system. The car may retain these records after the phone is unpaired unless you delete them from the head unit.
Grant only the permissions needed for the feature you use. Before lending or selling the car, remove every paired device and confirm that contacts, messages and downloaded media are gone.
9. Companion-app and account activity
A mobile app can log sign-ins, vehicle commands, location-map views, trip requests, charging actions, support chats and the phones or users authorized to access the account. Household members may therefore be affected even if they never touch the dashboard.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →10. Data used for service improvement or safety
Manufacturers may analyze aggregated or identifiable telemetry to diagnose faults, test software, improve navigation, evaluate advanced-driver-assistance features or plan recalls. “Improve products” is broader than delivering a single feature, so ask what categories are used, whether they are de-identified and how long they remain available.
Some vehicles offer separate switches for diagnostics, analytics, personalization and safety reporting. Turning off analytics may not disable legally required safety notices, but the exact effect is model-specific.
11. Disclosures to service providers and other third parties
Cloud hosts, mapping companies, roadside-assistance centers, call centers, payment processors, dealers and data-analytics contractors may receive information to operate a service. A privacy notice should identify these recipients and the purposes for sharing. Commercial transfers can be harder to see when several providers sit behind one feature.
Compare whether location or driving data is shared with insurers, consumer reporting agencies, data brokers or only operational service providers; whether consent is opt-in or opt-out; and whether you can access or delete the data. A broad policy may not answer every product question. In a February 2024 letter, Senator Edward J. Markey said automakers’ responses left open questions about commercial transfers, deletion rights, functionality lost when collection is declined and collection beyond service needs: read the letter.
12. Retention, resale and transfer risks
Personal data can remain in a used vehicle, its paired phones, the previous owner’s app account or a manufacturer’s cloud service. Saved addresses, garage-door credentials, digital keys and remote-command history can expose the former owner or a new driver.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A practical U.S. checklist to inspect and limit collection
- Identify the data path. Write down the make, model, model year, trim, cellular provider or connected package, navigation system, driver-monitoring hardware and companion apps. Download the vehicle-specific privacy notice, connected-service terms and app privacy policy.
- Inventory the settings. In the car, open Settings and look for Privacy, Data, Connectivity, Connected Services, Voice, Location, Diagnostics or Analytics. In the app, check account privacy, location sharing, trip history, personalization and consent screens. Labels and effects vary by model.
- Separate essential from optional features. Note whether each setting supports remote lock, remote start, live traffic, navigation search, emergency assistance, charging control or roadside help. Record what will stop working before you disable it.
- Submit a specific request. Use the manufacturer’s privacy portal or support channel to ask what data is tied to the vehicle identification number and account, which recipients receive it, the retention period, and how to access, delete or restrict it. Save the request number and response.
- Check state-specific rights. Access, deletion, correction and opt-out options differ among companies and U.S. states. Use the current manufacturer portal and, if necessary, the relevant state privacy regulator rather than relying on an old template.
- Review other drivers. Tell household members and regular passengers which connected features are active. Check shared users and location permissions in the app as well as the in-car profile.
- Recheck after updates. Software updates, a new subscription or a replacement phone can add a service or restore a consent prompt. Review the settings after each change.
What you may lose when you restrict data
| Restriction | Possible effect | Question to ask |
|---|---|---|
| Disable vehicle location | Live vehicle map, trip history or location-based assistance may stop. | Can emergency calling still transmit location during a crash? |
| Disable diagnostics or analytics | Remote fault alerts, predictive maintenance or some support tools may be limited. | Will safety recalls and mandatory notices still reach me? |
| Disable voice processing | Voice search, dictation and conversational commands may be unavailable. | Are recordings stored, or is only a transcript sent? |
| Disable connected services | Remote lock/start, charging control, live traffic and roadside assistance may stop. | Is the change reversible without a dealer visit? |
| Delete the app account | Cloud history and remote commands may disappear, but some vehicle data may be retained under separate terms. | Which records are deleted immediately and which follow a retention schedule? |
What the FTC’s GM/OnStar action does—and does not—show
In January 2025, the FTC announced an action against General Motors and its OnStar subsidiary alleging that precise geolocation and driving-behavior data were collected and shared with consumer reporting agencies without adequate consent. The FTC said some users’ location data was collected as often as every three seconds. FTC Chair Lina M. Khan stated: “GM monitored and sold people’s precise geolocation data and driver behavior information, sometimes as often as every three seconds.”
The announcement described a proposed order, including a five-year ban on disclosure of covered data to consumer reporting agencies, affirmative consent before collection with exceptions, and mechanisms for consumer access, deletion and collection limits. It was a specific enforcement matter and procedural proposal, not a finding that every automaker follows the same practice or a final industry-wide rule. Read the FTC announcement for its scope and status.

For a plain-language walkthrough of owner controls, the Associated Press guide covers common dashboard, app and account steps: Modern cars are spying on you. Here’s what you can do about it.
How to compare two cars or connected services
Do not compare privacy by brand slogan alone. Put the exact trims and services side by side using these questions:
- Which data categories are collected: location, speed, events, destinations, voice, video, phone data and account activity?
- What is the stated purpose for each category, and how long is it retained?
- Which parties receive it, including insurers, consumer reporting agencies, data brokers and operational providers?
- Is consent opt-in, opt-out or bundled with a service subscription?
- Can you access, correct, delete or restrict the data, and through which portal?
- Are controls available in the vehicle, app, web account or only through customer support?
- Which convenience or safety features disappear after opting out?
Capture screenshots or downloaded copies of the applicable notices when you buy or activate a service. Policies and menus can change with software updates, ownership transfers and state requirements.
Before you sell, trade in or lend the car
- Remove every paired phone, Bluetooth device, USB profile, contact list and saved destination.
- Delete driver profiles, Wi-Fi credentials, garage-door codes, digital keys and payment details.
- Remove other users from the companion app, revoke shared access and sign out of the vehicle account.
- Run the manufacturer’s documented factory, master or owner reset; do not assume a simple logout erases cloud data.
- Close, transfer or delete the connected-service account and request deletion of eligible records.
- After the transfer, confirm that the vehicle no longer appears in your app and that remote commands fail.
These steps protect both the next driver and your household. A reset clears local information; it does not automatically erase every server-side record, so make the separate account or privacy request where the manufacturer provides one.
Bottom line
Your car is most likely to “spy” through ordinary connected functions: telematics, navigation, sensors, microphones, cameras, paired devices and companion accounts. Map those functions to the exact notices and settings for your vehicle, then disable or limit the categories you do not need while checking which conveniences or safety services you give up. The strongest protection is an informed configuration, a documented privacy request and a complete reset whenever the car changes hands.
