There is no single standard design. DARPA’s Gremlins describes aircraft-launched and potentially air-recovered drones; the Perdix demonstration used fighter flare dispensers; and the Office of Naval Research’s LOCUST work examined rapid naval swarm launches. A swarm describes coordinated behavior, not merely several drones flying together.
“Mothership” is a useful analogy, not a standard military system
In plain language, a mothership is a larger aircraft or vessel that transports smaller unmanned vehicles close to where they are needed. Official programs use different names, platforms and objectives, so the term should not be read as a specification. DARPA’s Gremlins concept covers groups of small unmanned aircraft launched from transports, bombers, fighters and other fixed-wing aircraft. Other programs address swarming without using a large aircraft as a carrier at all.

The word swarm refers to how the vehicles cooperate. A group is not automatically a swarm because it contains multiple aircraft. In the U.S. Department of Defense account of the Perdix demonstration, the drones communicated and collaborated, made collective decisions, adapted their formation and could “self-heal” when membership changed. Those behaviors describe that demonstration; they are not a universal specification for every military drone group.

How an aircraft-carried swarm sequence works
Although hardware differs from one program to another, the operational sequence can be understood in four stages.

1. Carry the smaller vehicles to a release area
The host platform uses its own range and payload capacity to move the smaller aircraft toward an intended operating area. Gremlins’ published concept explicitly includes large transports and bombers as well as fighters and other fixed-wing aircraft. The host does not have to be an autonomous drone; the concept is about using a larger aircraft to deploy a team of smaller ones.
Carrying the vehicles changes the mission’s starting point. The small aircraft do not need to fly the entire distance from a runway or ship, and a carrier can potentially release them from several directions or at a chosen time. The cited program descriptions do not establish a common payload size, range, speed or inventory for all such systems, so those characteristics must be treated as design-specific.
2. Release them with the system’s own hardware
There is no universal dispenser, tube or ejector. The release method depends on the host aircraft, the small vehicle and the intended launch conditions.

For Perdix, the Department of Defense reported that 103 micro-drones were launched from three F/A-18 Super Hornets during a demonstration in October 2016. The department described ejection from fighter flare dispensers as a possible deployment arrangement. That is evidence of one fighter-based method, not proof that every air-launched swarm uses flare dispensers.
Gremlins is described as an air-launch concept, while LOCUST is a separate naval effort associated with rapid swarm launching from a ship. The Office of Naval Research’s 2015 release described a planned demonstration involving 30 autonomous, swarming unmanned aircraft. Because the release described a plan at that time, it should not be treated as confirmation that the specific ship demonstration later occurred.

3. Let the vehicles coordinate as a group
After release, the small aircraft can exchange information and adjust their behavior rather than relying on a single vehicle to direct every movement. In the Perdix account, the Department of Defense characterized the group as leaderless: each drone communicated and collaborated with the others. The reported outcomes included collective decision-making, adaptive formation flying and self-healing when drones entered or left the team.
That arrangement is different from simply sending several remotely piloted aircraft into the same airspace. A swarm can distribute decisions among its members, but the exact division of authority, communications architecture and mission rules vary by program. The official descriptions cited here do not provide a common technical standard that can be applied to every military swarm.

4. Complete the mission, or attempt recovery
Some concepts end with the smaller aircraft completing a one-way mission. Gremlins adds a more demanding objective: airborne recovery so the vehicles can be reused. In that concept, a carrier aircraft would recover the small aircraft in flight instead of treating them as expendable after launch.
Recovery is a program goal, not a capability that can be assumed for every swarm. DARPA’s 2020 Gremlins update described risk-reduction work and formation flights, noted that the first recovery attempt had been delayed, and listed recovery milestones as planned test objectives. That account documents an active development and test plan; it does not establish routine recovery in operational service.
What the main official examples actually show
| Example | Carrier or launch context | What the official account establishes | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|---|
| DARPA Gremlins | Existing aircraft, including transports, bombers, fighters and a C-130 used in demonstration work | A concept for groups of small aircraft to be launched, recovered in mid-air and reused; 2020 flight testing and stated recovery milestones | Air launch and recovery were program objectives. A planned milestone or demonstration platform is not automatically an achieved routine capability. |
| Perdix | Three F/A-18 Super Hornets; ejection from fighter flare dispensers was described | The Department of Defense reported a 103-drone demonstration conducted in October 2016 and described collective decision-making, adaptive formation flight and self-healing | The launch arrangement and behaviors belong to this demonstration. They do not make fighter dispensers a universal swarm launcher. |
| ONR LOCUST | Naval swarm-launch context, with a ship-based demonstration described in a 2015 release | A low-cost swarming UAV effort and a planned demonstration of 30 rapidly launched systems; a human would monitor the mission and could take control | The 30-aircraft figure was a plan stated in 2015. It is not evidence by itself of later execution or current deployment. |
| DARPA OFFSET | Small-unit operations in urban environments using air and ground systems | A program vision for swarm tactics and human-swarm interfaces | OFFSET concerns tactics and control for small units. It is not a mothership release mechanism. |
The table illustrates why apparently similar headlines can describe different technologies. Gremlins focuses on carrying, launching and recovering aircraft. Perdix supplies a documented example of distributed swarm behavior and a particular fighter release arrangement. LOCUST addresses rapid naval launching, while OFFSET addresses how small units might use air and ground swarms in cities.

How “swarm” control differs from a central drone operator
A conventional remotely piloted aircraft usually has a defined control link and an operator or command system that directs it. A swarm can shift some decisions to the vehicles themselves. The Perdix description attributed leaderless behavior to communication and collaboration among all members. William Roper, then director of the Department of Defense Strategic Capabilities Office, summarized the idea this way: “Because every Perdix communicates and collaborates with every other Perdix, the swarm has no leader and can gracefully adapt to drones entering or exiting the team.”
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThat quotation is an attributed description of Perdix, not a definition that every future swarm must satisfy. Other systems can combine distributed behavior with supervisory commands, mission boundaries or selected human intervention. LOCUST’s 2015 description explicitly said a human would monitor the mission and could take control. Human supervision therefore remains compatible with autonomous or collaborative flight; “autonomous” does not necessarily mean unsupervised.
DARPA’s OFFSET program likewise focused on human-swarm interfaces for small-unit operations. Its presence in the program portfolio shows that the problem is not only how to launch many vehicles, but also how people understand, direct and constrain a group once it is operating.
Can a mothership recover the smaller drones?
Gremlins is the clearest example of a recovery ambition. DARPA describes the vehicles as air-launched and air-recoverable, with reuse as part of the concept. A larger aircraft would therefore serve both as a transport and as a recovery platform.
The recovery objective introduces a different test standard from a one-way release. The carrier and the small aircraft must rendezvous, the recovery sequence must work at flight speed, and the vehicles must survive the process well enough to be used again. DARPA’s 2020 status account reported formation and risk-reduction flights, a delayed first recovery attempt and future recovery milestones. Those details matter because they distinguish an engineering objective from a fielded capability.

Neither the Perdix demonstration nor the LOCUST announcement establishes that its smaller aircraft routinely return to a carrier. Their cited descriptions focus on release, coordination or planned launch activity rather than a completed airborne-recovery system.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to compare military swarm systems without mixing unlike claims
When two programs are described as “drone swarms,” compare them on separate axes instead of treating the label as a performance rating:
- Host platform: Is the carrier a transport, bomber, fighter, ship or no carrier at all?
- Release method: Does the design use a dispenser, another aircraft-specific ejector or a ship-based launch arrangement?
- Vehicle population: How many smaller aircraft were demonstrated or planned, and are they fixed-wing, ground, air or mixed systems?
- Control model: Are decisions distributed among vehicles, directed centrally or supervised through a human-swarm interface?
- Human role: Does a person monitor the mission, retain an intervention path or set mission-level objectives?
- Mission framing: Is the program concerned with reconnaissance and other modular, non-kinetic payloads, small-unit tactics, rapid launch or another purpose?
- Recovery objective: Is airborne retrieval and reuse a stated goal, a completed demonstration or not part of the cited system?
Using these axes prevents a documented behavior in one program from being mistaken for a feature of another. It also avoids ranking programs on a common effectiveness scale that the cited official releases do not provide.
What the published numbers do—and do not—tell you
The most concrete figures are demonstration or planning counts. The Department of Defense’s Perdix release reported 103 drones launched from three F/A-18s in a demonstration carried out in October 2016 and reported publicly in 2017. That number shows the size of that event; it is not a standard swarm size or a limit on future systems.
ONR’s 2015 LOCUST release described a planned ship demonstration involving 30 rapidly launched autonomous, swarming UAVs. Because it was a plan stated at the time, the figure should be read as a proposed demonstration scale, not as a confirmed operational fleet.
Best Value
The official material does not establish a general measure of combat effectiveness, achieved cost savings, current operational prevalence or a comprehensive inventory of fielded mothership systems. Historical demonstrations and development milestones are valuable evidence of what was attempted, but they cannot answer those broader questions by themselves.
Programs that should not be conflated with mothership release
Some autonomy projects are related to unmanned operations but solve a different problem. DARPA’s REMA program is described as adding mission autonomy to commercial or stock military drones, including operation after the operator connection is lost. That is an autonomy and mission-continuation effort, not a carrier aircraft that releases a swarm.
Similarly, OFFSET’s focus on urban small-unit tactics and human-swarm interaction does not mean it demonstrated a fighter or transport releasing dozens of aircraft. Keeping those categories separate makes descriptions more precise: launch hardware, distributed coordination, mission autonomy and tactical employment are connected topics, but they are not interchangeable capabilities.
What can be concluded about military “mothership” drones
Military drones can carry and release smaller drones in more than one way. A large aircraft may transport a group and launch it in flight; a fighter may eject micro-drones from a dispenser; or a naval system may launch many vehicles from a ship. Once released, the smaller aircraft may coordinate through distributed communications and adapt their formation, while human operators retain monitoring or intervention roles.
The strongest evidence is program-specific. Perdix demonstrated a 103-drone launch and reported collaborative swarm behaviors. Gremlins established an air-launch and air-recovery development objective, with recovery milestones still described as future work in the cited 2020 update. LOCUST documented a naval swarm-launch plan in 2015. None of those accounts, alone or together, proves that every military swarm has a mothership, that all swarms are recoverable, or that the programs represent today’s complete operational inventory.
