Federal and, where applicable, state income-tax withholding can reduce the amount deposited from the gross award. The withholding taken from the payment is only a prepayment; your final tax is settled on your annual return and depends on total income, deductions, credits, filing status and state rules.
A limited combat-zone exclusion can change the result for a qualifying reenlistment or continuation bonus when the service agreement was executed while the member was present in a qualifying combat zone. Having a cyber specialty, working in a cyber unit or conducting a remote cyber operation does not, by itself, make a bonus tax-free.

The short answer: expect a taxable payment unless a specific exclusion applies
Internal Revenue Service military tax guidance treats enlistment, reenlistment and similar incentive payments as military wage income unless an exclusion in the tax law applies. The Defense Finance and Accounting Service (DFAS) likewise describes bonuses and incentive pay as generally taxable. A cyber bonus follows that general rule because of what the payment is, not because of the member’s job title.
Payroll normally calculates the first deposit by starting with the gross bonus installment, subtracting federal and possibly state income-tax withholding and then subtracting other deductions that apply to the member’s pay. The deposit is therefore not a reliable statement of the final tax cost. A large withholding can produce a refund later, while a small withholding can leave additional tax due when the return is filed.

No official source establishes a universal current bonus amount, average award or typical cyber-specialty take-home figure. Amounts and eligibility vary by branch, component, contract, installment schedule and the policy in force when the agreement is signed.
Why a military cyber bonus is usually taxable
Bonuses are treated as wage income
IRS Publication 3, Armed Forces’ Tax Guide, and Publication 525 frame military compensation as taxable wages unless a particular exclusion applies. IRS training materials specifically identify enlistment and reenlistment bonuses as income and describe withholding reported on Form W-2. The same treatment generally covers retention, continuation and other incentive payments made under a military agreement.
“Cyber bonus” is a recruiting or retention description, not a separate federal tax category. The tax result normally follows the payment’s legal character and the member’s service circumstances. A bonus paid in one installment and a bonus paid in several installments are both potentially taxable; the timing changes when withholding occurs and which tax year receives the income.
A cyber assignment does not create an automatic exemption
Serving in a cyber occupational specialty, being assigned to a cyber mission or supporting operations from outside a combat zone does not independently satisfy the combat-zone exclusion. Do not infer tax-free treatment from a unit name, a classified mission, a remote location or the fact that the work supports deployed forces. The member must meet the statutory service and timing requirements for the specific exclusion.

When the combat-zone exclusion can apply
The agreement’s timing matters
IRS guidance states that a reenlistment or continuation bonus may be excluded when the reenlistment or the execution of the contractual agreement for continued service occurred during a month in which the member was present in a qualifying combat zone. The relevant location must have an official qualifying designation, and the member’s service must meet the applicable hostile-fire or imminent-danger-pay criteria. A bonus connected with a later payment date does not automatically qualify simply because the member eventually deploys.
The IRS describes the rule this way: “Reenlistment or continuation bonuses – You can exclude this income if the reenlistment or the execution of the contractual agreement for continued service occurred while present in a combat zone.” The sentence describes a conditional exclusion, not a blanket rule for all military bonuses or all personnel working on cyber missions.
What “excluded” does and does not mean
Where the requirements are met, the exclusion concerns federal gross income within the limits and conditions in the applicable IRS guidance. It does not mean every tax connected with the payment disappears. Social Security and Medicare taxes continue to apply to excluded military pay. State treatment can also differ, so a member should not assume that a federal exclusion automatically removes state tax.

How withholding changes the amount deposited
The payment calculation
A useful first-pass formula is:
gross bonus installment − income-tax withholding − other payroll deductions = approximate deposit
“Approximate” is important. DFAS considers the member’s Form W-4 information, service records, combat-zone tax-exemption status, Internal Revenue Service requirements and state-of-residence rules when it calculates withholding. Insurance premiums, allotments, retirement contributions and other deductions can also affect the deposit, depending on how the payment is processed.
Supplemental-wage withholding rates for 2026
For context, the 2026 IRS Publication 15-B states: “The withholding rate on supplemental wages remains 22% (37% if supplemental wages paid to an employee during the calendar year exceed $1 million).” These are withholding methods for covered supplemental wages. They are not promises that every member will owe 22% or 37% on the bonus after filing a return.
The 37% rate applies when supplemental wages paid to the employee during the calendar year exceed $1 million under the rule. That threshold is about the year’s supplemental-wage payments, not a claim that ordinary military cyber bonuses are commonly that large. A service payroll system may also use an allowable aggregate method when a bonus is paid with regular wages, so the actual calculation should be confirmed on the leave-and-earnings statement or with finance.

An illustrative calculation, not a prediction
Suppose a member receives a hypothetical $20,000 bonus installment and payroll uses the 22% supplemental-wage withholding method. Federal income-tax withholding under that method would be $4,400, leaving $15,600 before any other applicable deductions. The example does not establish a typical bonus, does not calculate Social Security or Medicare withholding, and does not predict the member’s final liability. State withholding and the member’s elections could change the deposit further.
Withholding versus final tax on the annual return
Withholding is money sent to the government during the year on the member’s behalf. The final federal tax is calculated after adding all taxable wages and other income, applying the filing status, deductions and credits, and accounting for payments already withheld. The bonus can push some income into a higher marginal bracket without making the entire annual income subject to that higher rate.
For example, a member who receives a bonus late in the year may see a substantial amount withheld immediately even though deductions, credits or lower total annual income produce a smaller final liability. Another member with substantial regular wages, a spouse’s income or fewer credits may owe more than the amount withheld. The only reliable comparison is between the year’s total tax and total withholding on the filed return.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsState tax depends on legal residence and state law
State withholding is not uniform. DFAS uses state-of-residence rules as part of payroll processing and directs members to the relevant state tax authority for state-specific treatment. A military taxpayer’s legal residence, domicile, duty location and state filing obligations can differ, and states do not all mirror the federal combat-zone exclusion.
Best Value
Do not apply a blanket statement that military pay or military bonuses are state-tax-free. Confirm the member’s recorded legal residence, whether the state taxes military income, whether it recognizes the federal exclusion and whether a separate state return or exemption form is required. A change of duty station does not automatically change domicile.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why installment timing matters
Bonus agreements may pay the award in a lump sum or in scheduled installments. Each payment can create a separate withholding event, and the tax year in which an installment is actually paid generally controls when it is reported as wage income. A payment made in December and one made in January can therefore fall into different tax years even when they arise from the same agreement.
Installments can also interact with the supplemental-wage threshold and with the member’s year-to-date wages. Review every leave-and-earnings statement, not just the first payment. Compare the gross amount, taxable wages, federal and state withholding, Social Security and Medicare entries, and any deductions against the contract’s payment schedule.

Contract conditions and repayment risk
DoD Financial Management Regulation Volume 7A, Chapter 9, establishes policy for active-duty enlisted enlistment, reenlistment and retention bonuses. Repayment can apply when a member does not complete the agreed service term or fails another condition of the bonus. The signed agreement and the applicable service policy control the member’s obligation.
Repayment is a separate issue from whether the original payment was taxable. If a member later has to return a bonus, the correct tax-year treatment can depend on when the repayment occurs and the rules then in effect. The sources summarized here do not establish a single procedure for correcting tax paid on every repayment scenario. Before filing an amended return or claiming a deduction, obtain current IRS guidance or advice from a qualified military tax preparer and retain the repayment notice.
Two common tax outcomes compared
| Situation | Federal income-tax treatment | Effect on the initial deposit |
|---|---|---|
| Ordinary cyber enlistment, reenlistment or retention bonus with no applicable exclusion | Generally included in wage income. IRS military guidance treats these payments as taxable unless an exclusion applies. | Income-tax withholding and other payroll deductions reduce the gross installment. Final tax is reconciled on the annual return. |
| Qualifying reenlistment or continuation bonus tied to combat-zone service | May be excluded from federal gross income when the location, service and agreement-timing requirements are met. | Social Security and Medicare taxes still apply to excluded military pay; state treatment and payroll coding must be verified. |
What you need to estimate your own take-home pay
A meaningful estimate requires more than the phrase “cyber bonus.” Gather these inputs before relying on a calculator or asking finance for a projection:
- The gross bonus amount and whether it is paid at once or in installments.
- The expected payment date for each installment and the tax year involved.
- Expected full-year military and nonmilitary income, including a spouse’s income when filing jointly.
- Federal filing status and the elections on Form W-4.
- State of legal residence and the state’s treatment of military compensation.
- Retirement contributions, insurance premiums, allotments and any other payroll deductions.
- Whether the agreement and service facts could satisfy the combat-zone exclusion.
- Any repayment, service-length or other contingency written into the signed bonus agreement.
With these details, finance can explain the payroll calculation and a tax professional can estimate annual liability. Without them, publishing a single “you will take home” percentage would be misleading.

Quick Recap
How to verify the payment and correct an error
- Read the agreement first. Identify the bonus type, gross amount, installment dates, required service and repayment clauses.
- Check the leave-and-earnings statement. Match the bonus line to the gross amount and inspect federal, state, Social Security, Medicare and other deduction lines.
- Review withholding elections. DFAS says members can review and change withholding through myPay or through their finance office. Changes affect future withholding, not necessarily a payment already processed.
- Confirm combat-zone coding. If the member believes the exclusion applies, verify that the qualifying location, month of presence and agreement date are correctly recorded. A cyber assignment alone is not evidence of qualification.
- Keep supporting records. Save the agreement, orders, pay statements, W-2 and any finance correspondence with the tax file.
- Escalate discrepancies promptly. Ask the servicing finance office to explain an incorrect amount or missing exclusion. For a filing or repayment question, use current IRS guidance or a qualified military tax preparer.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Calling every cyber bonus tax-free. The cyber specialty does not replace the combat-zone eligibility test.
- Treating 22% as the final tax rate. It is a 2026 supplemental-wage withholding rate for covered payments, not the member’s annual marginal or effective rate.
- Ignoring Social Security and Medicare. Those taxes can remain due even when qualifying military pay is excluded from federal gross income.
- Assuming state and federal rules match. State residence and state law must be checked separately.
- Using a deposit as proof of tax liability. The deposit reflects withholding and deductions; the return determines final federal tax.
- Overlooking repayment clauses. Failing to complete the required service can create a debt and a separate tax-reporting question.
- Using a generic bonus estimate. No authoritative universal cyber-bonus amount or average take-home figure is established; rely on the member’s current announcement and signed agreement.
