A weaker won can magnify the local-currency cost of imported fuel, and foreign investors may reduce Korean equity exposure when the dollar strengthens. The result is not automatically a market-wide fall. Semiconductor earnings, export demand, fiscal measures and expectations for a short-lived disruption can offset or reverse the pressure.
The useful question is therefore not whether a conflict is “good” or “bad” for the KOSPI, but which transmission channels are active, how long they may last and whether company earnings can absorb them.

The main transmission channels
Oil prices raise costs before they affect earnings
A conflict can add a risk premium to crude oil even when physical shipments continue normally. If production, shipping routes or insurance are disrupted, the effect can become a genuine supply shock. South Korean households and companies then face higher petroleum prices, while manufacturers, airlines, logistics firms, chemicals producers and other energy-intensive businesses see input costs rise.
The pass-through is not fixed. It depends on the duration of the disruption, alternative supply, government measures, inventory levels and the exchange rate. A brief headline-driven oil spike may fade before quarterly earnings are materially changed. A sustained supply interruption can move from fuel prices into electricity, transport, packaging, food and other goods and services.

Inflation and growth can deteriorate together
The Bank of Korea has described this as a policy trade-off: an energy-supply shock can lift inflation while weakening economic activity. In its May 28, 2026 opening remarks, the bank said April consumer-price inflation was 2.6%, attributing the increase to a sharp rise in petroleum-product prices. That is a dated April 2026 observation, not a current inflation rate. The same remarks warned that global oil-price effects could spread to other goods and services.
For stocks, the combination matters more than either variable alone. Higher costs can reduce margins and household purchasing power, while weaker demand can reduce sales. If investors believe inflation will persist, they may also price fewer or later interest-rate cuts. Higher bond yields generally reduce the present value assigned to future corporate cash flows, all else equal, although individual sessions can move differently as markets digest new information.
The dollar and the won change both costs and returns
Oil is normally priced in dollars. When the dollar rises against the won, the same barrel costs more in Korean currency, even if the dollar oil price is unchanged. A weaker won can therefore compound imported-energy inflation. It can also alter the translated value of Korean companies’ overseas revenue, so the effect on exporters is not a simple “weak currency is good” rule.
The Bank of Korea’s May 28 account said the won-dollar rate reached around 1,500 won per US dollar after dollar appreciation and large net selling of domestic stocks by foreign investors. This is an approximate, dated observation from that statement, not a live quote and not proof that the conflict alone caused the move. Currency direction reflects US interest-rate expectations, global demand for safe assets, Korea-specific fundamentals and positioning as well as Middle East headlines.

Risk aversion changes portfolio flows
When investors move into perceived safe-haven assets, emerging-market equities and currencies can experience outflows. Foreign selling can pressure Korean shares directly and reinforce won weakness when proceeds are converted into dollars. A broad rise in the dollar, volatility in credit markets or a fall in other Asian markets can matter even if Korea’s domestic data have not changed.
The International Monetary Fund’s April 2026 Global Financial Stability Report identified cross-border portfolio flows and sensitivity to global risk sentiment as important channels. The report said markets had repriced in response to the conflict but that overall functioning had remained orderly at the time of its assessment. It also warned that leverage and tighter financial conditions could amplify a subsequent move.
Market structure can magnify a one-day move
Leverage, thin liquidity and mechanical rebalancing can turn an ordinary repricing into an outsized session. The IMF’s April 2026 GFSR chapter reported that the KOSPI lost 12 percent in one day during the early conflict period and said leveraged exchange-traded funds reportedly contributed to the unusually large sell-off. “Reportedly” is important: the example describes a contribution to one episode, not a claim that exchange-traded funds generally cause crashes or that every conflict produces a 12 percent fall.

In a leveraged product, a decline can trigger rebalancing or forced selling that adds to market pressure. The same mechanism can work in reverse during a rebound. Investors should treat leverage and liquidity as amplification conditions, not as the original cause of an energy or geopolitical shock.

Earnings and sector composition can offset macro pressure
A national index is a collection of companies, not a single exposure to oil. The Bank of Korea’s May remarks described a correction associated with worsening conflict and foreign profit-taking, while also noting that stocks remained on an upward trend because of earnings expectations. The remarks specifically cited semiconductor strength. If chip demand, pricing or another major sector is improving, that earnings force can outweigh a temporary increase in risk aversion.
Company-level sensitivity depends on energy intensity, pricing power, hedging, inventory policy, export currency mix and the geographic source of revenue. A firm that can pass higher freight or materials costs to customers faces a different risk from one selling into a price-sensitive market.
Why the shock can be pronounced in South Korea
On April 10, 2026, the Bank of Korea Governor said in the Monetary Policy Board’s opening remarks: “the current war is having a larger impact on Asia, where the dependence on Middle Eastern crude oil imports is high.” The sentence explains why a Middle East event can matter to Korean assets even when the conflict is geographically distant. The bank did not give a percentage in that passage, so no precise share of Korean or Asian oil imports should be inferred from it.
South Korea’s open economy links energy costs to factory margins, transport, household budgets, inflation expectations and export competitiveness. It is also highly integrated with global capital markets. A shock can therefore arrive through several routes at once: the physical price of energy, the dollar-won exchange rate, foreign portfolio flows, bond yields and expectations for semiconductor and other export earnings.

What the dated 2026 evidence shows
| Observation | What the source said | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| April 2026 consumer inflation: 2.6% | The Bank of Korea’s May 28, 2026 opening remarks attributed the increase to a sharp rise in petroleum-product prices and warned of wider pass-through. | A national CPI reading for April 2026, not a current rate or a forecast. |
| Won-dollar rate around 1,500 | The same May remarks linked the approximate level to dollar appreciation and large net selling of domestic stocks by foreign investors. | A dated observation; it does not isolate the conflict’s causal effect or provide today’s exchange rate. |
| March market volatility | The Bank of Korea’s March 2026 Monetary Policy Report said volatility had risen as the Middle East conflict strengthened inflation concerns and risk aversion. | Evidence that several channels were visible together in March, not a rule for every later session. |
| One-day KOSPI loss of 12% | The IMF’s April 2026 GFSR chapter reported the early-conflict episode and said leveraged ETFs reportedly contributed to the outsized move. | A historical, attributed example of amplification; not a normal or expected daily loss. |
| Market functioning | The IMF’s April 2026 assessment said markets had repriced while overall functioning remained orderly, but identified downside amplification risks. | Repricing and disorder are different conditions; the report did not establish future market conditions. |
How different conflict paths can produce different market outcomes
| Path | Likely first-order pressure | What could offset it | Key evidence to watch |
|---|---|---|---|
| Brief headline shock with no lasting supply loss | Oil risk premium, stronger dollar, temporary foreign selling and higher volatility. | Oil retreat, stable shipping, resilient earnings and a quick return of risk appetite. | Crude futures, freight and insurance reports, won-dollar moves, foreign net flows and volatility. |
| Sustained physical energy disruption | Higher petroleum and production costs, rising inflation expectations, margin pressure and weaker demand. | Alternative supply, strategic inventories, fiscal relief, hedging and companies’ pricing power. | Physical supply and shipping data, petroleum-product prices, inflation expectations and company guidance. |
| Global growth slowdown without a large oil spike | Lower export demand and weaker cyclical earnings, even if imported-cost pressure is limited. | Domestic demand, targeted policy support or strength in a specific export cycle. | Purchasing-manager surveys, trading-partner data, order books and earnings revisions. |
| Risk-off move with leverage and thin liquidity | Fast equity declines, wider spreads, forced rebalancing and currency stress. | Central-bank liquidity, orderly functioning and investors reducing leverage. | Funding spreads, ETF flows, margin conditions, market depth and intraday reversals. |
How the Korean market connects to global markets
Bond yields and equity valuations
Oil-related inflation can push investors to expect tighter monetary policy or fewer rate cuts. Higher sovereign and corporate yields then raise financing costs and can compress equity valuation multiples. The effect is conditional: if stronger nominal growth or exceptional earnings dominates, shares can rise despite higher yields. The relevant question is whether the change in yields reflects inflation risk, growth optimism, or a flight to safety.
Foreign-exchange translation
A weaker won can increase the won value of overseas sales when exporters report results, but it also raises the cost of dollar-priced energy and materials. Foreign investors assess returns in their own currencies, so a Korean share that is flat in won can still produce a negative dollar return if the won depreciates. Conversely, currency gains can enhance a foreign investor’s result even when the local index is unchanged.
Supply chains and trade
Shipping delays, higher freight insurance or rerouted cargo can affect delivery times and working capital. Korea’s manufacturers may face higher costs for energy, chemicals or components while customers elsewhere cut orders because of weaker growth. These effects differ by company; an index-level conclusion cannot substitute for reading exposure and guidance.
A monitoring dashboard for readers
When Middle East tensions intensify, track the variables together rather than reacting to a single headline:
Best Value
- Energy: crude oil, refined petroleum products, natural-gas benchmarks relevant to Asia, shipping routes, freight rates and insurance costs.
- Currency: the won-dollar rate, broad dollar indexes and signs that currency moves are becoming disorderly.
- Inflation: Korean consumer prices, producer prices, inflation expectations and evidence that fuel increases are spreading to services and goods.
- Rates: Bank of Korea communications, US and Korean bond yields, and market pricing for future policy decisions.
- Flows and liquidity: foreign equity buying or selling, credit spreads, trading depth, volatility and ETF creations or redemptions.
- Earnings: semiconductor pricing and demand, export orders, company guidance, energy hedges and changes in analysts’ profit estimates.
- Policy response: strategic-stock releases, tax or subsidy measures, fiscal support and coordination among major energy-importing economies.
No single indicator identifies the market’s next direction. The combination helps distinguish a short-lived risk premium from a shock that is entering inflation, demand and earnings data.
Common analytical mistakes
Assuming every oil rise is a lasting supply shock
Headline risk premiums can disappear if production and shipping remain intact. A durable disruption requires evidence in physical flows, inventories, refined-product availability or company costs, not only a first-day futures move.
Treating a weaker won as uniformly positive for exporters
Currency translation can help overseas revenue, but imported energy and materials become more expensive. The balance depends on the company’s cost base, hedging and ability to change prices.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsAssigning every move to the conflict
The Bank of Korea’s dated accounts included dollar appreciation, foreign selling, profit-taking, inflation concerns and semiconductor earnings. Those forces can overlap with geopolitical news without being caused entirely by it.
Using one extreme session as a forecast
The IMF’s reported 12 percent one-day KOSPI loss illustrates how leverage and liquidity can amplify stress. It is not a baseline scenario, an average response or evidence that leveraged ETFs generally create crashes.
Ignoring the policy trade-off
Central banks may face higher inflation and weaker growth simultaneously. A response aimed at inflation can weigh on demand, while support aimed at growth can complicate inflation management. Markets react to the expected policy path, not merely to the latest oil price.
A disciplined way to interpret new headlines
- Classify the shock: decide whether the report concerns actual energy supply, threatened supply, shipping risk or a diplomatic headline with no confirmed physical disruption.
- Check persistence: compare the move with subsequent oil, freight and inventory information instead of assuming the first reaction will last.
- Map the macro chain: assess the likely effects on Korean inflation, household demand, industrial costs, bond yields and the won.
- Separate index and company exposure: review sector earnings, semiconductor conditions, hedges, pricing power and export demand.
- Check positioning and liquidity: look for foreign-flow reversals, leverage, wide spreads or mechanical rebalancing that could exaggerate the move.
- Use dated evidence: label observations such as the April 2026 CPI figure or the May 28 exchange-rate account with their dates and source, rather than presenting them as live conditions.
This framework is for understanding market transmission, not a personal investment recommendation. The eventual effect on Korean stocks depends on duration, physical energy flows, exchange rates, policy choices, investor positioning and earnings strength acting together.
