Microsoft Intune reduces vulnerability risk by controlling how managed devices are configured, updated, evaluated and remediated. Its four most useful security functions are hardened baselines and endpoint-security policies, operating-system update enforcement, compliance decisions connected to Conditional Access, and remediation workflows that use Microsoft Defender for Endpoint intelligence. Intune is a management and control plane—not a standalone vulnerability scanner and not a guarantee that every flaw will be eliminated.
What Intune actually does for vulnerability reduction
Intune applies configuration to enrolled devices, reports whether settings and assignments succeeded, evaluates compliance rules, and coordinates actions with other Microsoft security services. The Endpoint security dashboard provides a consolidated view of security posture, while Microsoft Defender for Endpoint can contribute device-risk and vulnerability information.

This distinction matters. A policy can specify that a firewall must be enabled or that a device must run a supported operating-system version, but the policy does not prove the setting was successfully applied. Administrators must inspect assignment status, per-setting results, conflicts and remediation state. Protection also depends on enrollment, correct targeting, supported platforms, licensing and a workable operational process.

Security baselines standardize recommended defaults
Microsoft defines a security baseline as a group of preconfigured settings recommended by the relevant product security team. A baseline gives an organization a broad, repeatable starting configuration for Windows rather than asking administrators to design every hardening decision from scratch. Baseline versions can change as Microsoft updates recommendations, so a deployment should be reviewed when a new version is available.

The baseline configuration guidance requires an active Microsoft Intune Plan 1 subscription. Before assigning a profile, review each setting against business requirements. A recommended value may conflict with a line-of-business application, accessibility need, legacy authentication method or incident-response procedure. Treat the baseline as a reviewed standard, not an automatic “secure” button.
Endpoint-security policies target high-impact controls
When a team needs narrower scope or faster tuning, endpoint-security policies configure specific protection areas such as:
- Antivirus and Microsoft Defender settings.
- Firewall rules and network protection.
- BitLocker and other disk-encryption controls.
- Attack-surface-reduction rules.
- Endpoint detection and response configuration.
These focused policies are useful for piloting one control, separating responsibilities or applying different settings to servers, developer devices and standard user endpoints. The trade-off is that a collection of targeted profiles requires stronger policy governance than one broad baseline.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsHow to deploy without creating conflicts
- In the Intune admin center, choose the relevant security-baseline or endpoint-security policy type and create a profile.
- Review every proposed setting; document exceptions and the business owner for each exception.
- Assign the profile to a pilot group before broad deployment.
- Check device and per-setting status after assignment, including settings that are pending, failed or not applicable.
- Expand the assignment only after testing applications and confirming that the effective configuration matches the intended value.
Do not configure the same setting through multiple policy types with different values. Microsoft notes that conflicting assignments can require manual identification and resolution, and a conflicted setting may fail to apply. Compliance policies can coexist with configuration policies, but overlapping configuration values need an explicit owner and a single authoritative profile.

2. Reduce exposure to known flaws by enforcing operating-system updates
Use regular and expedited update policies
Unpatched operating systems remain exposed to vulnerabilities after a fix is available. Intune can enforce Windows quality-update policies for the normal monthly update cycle and expedited-update policies when a critical security patch needs to reach devices sooner. The result is reduced exposure to known flaws when policies are correctly configured, assigned and successfully installed; it does not remove unknown vulnerabilities or guarantee that every device updates on schedule.
Microsoft’s increased-device-security guidance also calls out update policies for macOS and iOS/iPadOS. Controls and capabilities vary by platform, so a Windows deferral or restart design should not be copied unchanged to Apple devices.
Build an update policy that can be operated
- Define quality-update deadlines: set a deferral window that gives IT time to validate a release without leaving endpoints unpatched indefinitely.
- Reserve expedited updates for urgent risk: use an expedited policy for a critical security release and communicate restart expectations to users.
- Separate test and production rings: assign a small pilot group first, then staged production groups.
- Account for restart and battery conditions: policies may need active hours, restart notifications and power requirements to complete installation.
- Monitor failures: investigate devices that are pending, incompatible, offline or repeatedly failing installation instead of treating assignment as proof of patching.
Update compliance should be interpreted with the platform and policy in view. A device can be enrolled yet still be behind on a quality update, unable to restart, or outside the supported operating-system range. Those states should feed a remediation queue rather than be hidden by a simple “policy assigned” report.
3. Turn compliance results into access restrictions
Compliance evaluates whether a device meets requirements
Compliance policies test conditions such as minimum operating-system versions, encryption, secure configuration and threat level. The policy produces a compliance state; it does not itself decide whether a user can open a cloud application.

In the documented Defender integration, Microsoft Defender for Endpoint supplies a device-risk signal to Intune. Intune can mark the device noncompliant when its risk exceeds the configured threshold. That status can then be consumed by Conditional Access to block access. The integration documentation describes the workflow and supported platform requirements.
Conditional Access is the enforcement layer
Conditional Access is an Entra capability, not an Intune-only feature. A typical decision chain is:
- Defender detects behavior or indicators that raise a device-risk level.
- Intune receives the signal and evaluates the device against a compliance policy.
- The device is marked compliant or noncompliant according to the configured threshold.
- An Entra Conditional Access policy checks that compliance result when the user requests a protected resource.
- Access is allowed, blocked or subjected to another control such as multifactor authentication, depending on the policy.
Microsoft’s increased-security checklist lists Entra ID P1 for relevant Conditional Access checks. Licensing and supported scenarios are capability-specific and can change, so verify current tenant entitlements before designing a purchase or rollout.
Design safe compliance enforcement
- Start in report-only mode or with a pilot group so an overly strict rule does not lock out an entire workforce.
- Provide a user-facing remediation path, such as installing a required update or opening the Company Portal for corrective actions.
- Exclude emergency-access accounts from ordinary user policies, protect them separately and test that the exclusion is intentional.
- Set a grace period where appropriate; immediate blocking may be justified for a high-confidence, high-severity signal but can be disruptive for transient reporting delays.
- Review sign-in logs, compliance reports and device-risk details together when a legitimate user is blocked.
4. Convert Defender findings into administrator remediation
Threat and vulnerability management supplies prioritized guidance
Microsoft Defender for Endpoint’s threat and vulnerability management capabilities identify at-risk devices and provide remediation guidance. Intune turns selected findings into an administrator workflow rather than pretending that discovery automatically changes the endpoint.

Microsoft’s data-and-device protection overview describes security tasks that connect the services. A task can be sent to Intune, where an administrator reviews and accepts it, applies an appropriate policy or configuration, and marks it complete after verifying remediation. The status then synchronizes back to Defender.
What the remediation loop looks like
- Defender identifies a vulnerability, exposure or device group requiring attention.
- The recommendation becomes a security task for the Intune administrator.
- The administrator confirms scope, selects or creates the suitable profile, and accepts the task.
- Intune deploys the configuration, update or restriction to targeted devices.
- The administrator checks deployment and device results, corrects failures or conflicts, and verifies that the risk condition changed.
- The task is marked complete only after verification; completion status synchronizes to Defender for tracking.
This is a collaboration and remediation workflow, not proof that every vulnerability has been automatically fixed. Some findings require application updates, hardware replacement, network changes or compensating controls outside Intune.
How the four controls fit together
| Control | Primary role | Typical breadth | What to monitor | Key dependency |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Security baseline | Standardize a broad Windows hardening configuration | Wide set of recommended settings | Version, assignment, per-setting status and conflicts | Intune Plan 1; business review of defaults |
| Endpoint-security policy | Configure a focused protection area | Antivirus, firewall, encryption, attack-surface reduction or EDR | Effective value, failed settings and overlapping assignments | Supported platform and policy type |
| Update policy | Reduce time exposed to known operating-system flaws | Platform-specific quality or expedited updates | Installation, restart, deferral and failure state | Supported OS, update channel and user/device conditions |
| Compliance plus Conditional Access | Evaluate device state and restrict resource access | Access decisions for users and devices | Compliance reason, risk signal, sign-in result and exceptions | Defender integration where used; Entra Conditional Access and applicable licensing |
| Defender security task | Coordinate remediation from a vulnerability finding | Finding-specific action | Acceptance, deployment, verification and synchronized status | Defender for Endpoint subscription and supported integration |
Licensing and deployment prerequisites
Microsoft’s baseline guidance lists Microsoft Intune Plan 1 as a prerequisite. The Intune–Defender device-compliance integration lists Intune Plan 1 and a Microsoft Defender for Endpoint subscription, along with platform-specific requirements. Microsoft’s increased-security checklist lists Entra ID P1 for Conditional Access checks and Defender for Endpoint Plan 1 for certain controls. These are not one universal bundle: the requirement depends on the capability, platform and tenant configuration. Confirm current Microsoft licensing terms before recommending or purchasing a plan.

Operational checks that prevent false confidence
When a policy is assigned but protection does not change
- Confirm the device is in the assignment scope and has checked in recently.
- Inspect per-setting status rather than relying on the profile’s assignment label.
- Look for a conflicting profile or local configuration that overrides the intended value.
- Check whether the setting is supported on that operating-system edition and version.
- Review error details, correct the configuration and force or await a device check-in.
When compliance and access results disagree
- Compare the device’s current compliance reason with the Conditional Access policy conditions.
- Check whether the Defender risk signal has synchronized and whether the configured threshold is correct.
- Inspect Entra sign-in logs to identify the exact policy that allowed or blocked the request.
- Verify that a user, device or emergency-access exclusion is not unintentionally bypassing enforcement.
When remediation remains open
- Confirm the administrator accepted the security task and selected an applicable policy.
- Check whether the target devices are online, supported and assigned.
- Resolve policy conflicts or failed updates before marking the task complete.
- Recheck the original Defender finding after deployment; do not close the task solely because a profile reports success.
A practical rollout sequence
- Inventory: identify enrolled platforms, operating-system versions, ownership models and existing security policies.
- Choose the control: use a baseline for broad Windows hardening, an endpoint-security profile for a focused setting, an update policy for patch exposure, or compliance and Conditional Access for access enforcement.
- Remove ambiguity: map each security setting to one authoritative configuration source and record approved exceptions.
- Pilot: test with representative users and applications, including devices with limited connectivity and different hardware.
- Measure deployment: inspect assignment, per-setting, update and compliance status; investigate failures before expansion.
- Stage production: roll out by rings and communicate restart, encryption or access requirements.
- Operate continuously: review baseline changes, patch failures, compliance trends, Defender tasks and Conditional Access sign-in results.
Used in this sequence, Intune turns security policy into an observable operating process: define the desired state, deploy it, verify the effective state, and use risk or compliance signals to determine what happens next.
Bottom line
Intune improves security posture through four connected controls: standardized hardening, timely operating-system updates, compliance-based access decisions and administrator-led remediation informed by Defender. Its value comes from consistent configuration and feedback loops. It cannot scan every vulnerability by itself, correct every failed deployment automatically or guarantee that managed devices are risk-free. Review settings, licensing, assignments, conflicts and verification results as part of normal security operations.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Microsoft Intune a vulnerability scanner?
No. Intune manages configuration, updates and compliance. Microsoft Defender for Endpoint provides threat and vulnerability intelligence that can feed Intune remediation and compliance workflows.
Can Intune block a risky device from Microsoft 365?
Intune can mark a device noncompliant, but Entra Conditional Access makes the access decision. The integration, policy configuration and applicable Entra licensing must be in place.
Do security baselines guarantee secure devices?
No. Baselines are recommended starting configurations. Administrators must review defaults, account for business exceptions, avoid conflicting policies and verify per-setting deployment results.
What happens if an Intune policy conflicts with another policy?
The conflicting setting may fail to apply. Identify which profiles configure the same setting, choose one authoritative value, remove or revise the overlap, and then verify the effective device state.
