Microsoft says your favorites, passwords, and settings are kept during an update. Edge’s documented idle-update process also restores ordinary open tabs after the restart, although InPrivate tabs and unsaved work require special care.
What an Edge update actually does
An Edge update replaces or adds browser software files; it is not described by Microsoft as a profile reset. Your browsing profile—favorites, saved passwords, and browser settings—remains in place when the update completes. The update may be downloaded before you notice anything, but the new code generally cannot become active until Edge restarts.

On Windows, there are two delivery routes. Edge can check and download an update from its own About page, and Windows Update can also deliver Edge updates. That means Edge may be current even if you did not manually open the browser’s update screen.

The shortest way to check
- Open Microsoft Edge.
- Select Settings and more (the three-dot menu).
- Choose Help and feedback, then About Microsoft Edge. You can also enter
edge://settings/helpin the address bar. - Let the page check the installed version and update status.
If an update is ready to download, the page can show Download and install. After the package is downloaded, the button can change to Restart. Selecting it closes and reopens Edge so installation can finish.

The four stages of an Edge update
1. Check
The About Microsoft Edge page checks the browser’s current version and looks for an applicable update. The result can be a message that Edge is up to date, a download control, a restart control, or an error that needs troubleshooting.
2. Download
When an update is available, choose Download and install. The browser obtains the package in the background or while the About page is open, depending on the situation. A metered connection can change this behavior: Edge may wait for your permission because downloading could consume cellular or otherwise chargeable data.
3. Apply
Edge applies the downloaded package during a browser restart. If the About page says Restart, the download is already complete and that restart is the final installation step. Closing and reopening Edge later can serve the same purpose, but using the displayed restart control gives you the clearest indication that the pending update is being applied.

4. Resume
After the restart, Edge opens again with the updated browser files. In the documented idle-update flow, Edge automatically restores the tabs that were open before the update. Restoration is not a guarantee for every kind of crash, forced termination, or profile problem, so save work before allowing a restart.
Will an update close or delete your tabs?
An update can temporarily close the browser because installation requires a restart. Microsoft’s idle-update documentation says Edge then automatically restores browser tabs so you can continue where you stopped. This behavior applies to normal browser tabs in that update flow, not to every possible shutdown scenario.
Situations where restoration is limited
- InPrivate mode: The documented automatic tab-restoration feature is not available for InPrivate browsing. InPrivate tabs should be treated as temporary.
- Unsaved work: A page may come back while text, uploads, or other in-progress actions do not. Save documents and submit or pause important work before restarting.
- Unexpected termination: A crash, power loss, forced process termination, or damaged profile can produce different results from a planned idle update.
- Profile and startup settings: What opens after a normal, user-initiated restart can depend on Edge’s startup configuration and the profile that is opened.
If tabs do not return
First check the browser’s restore-window command. If the previous window is not offered, press Ctrl+Shift+T to reopen recently closed tabs; repeat the shortcut to reopen additional tabs where available. This is a recovery attempt, not proof that every tab or page state can be reconstructed.

For critical work, keep the source document or service saved independently of the browser session. A restored tab may reload a page, but it cannot reliably recreate unsaved form entries, an unfinished upload, or a transaction that had not been submitted.
What happens to settings, passwords, and favorites?
Microsoft’s support guidance is explicit: “Your favorites, passwords, and settings are kept when you update Microsoft Edge.” An ordinary update therefore should not erase saved credentials, bookmarks, or customized browser options, and it is not presented as a factory reset of the profile.
Data that remains local
Keeping data through an update and synchronizing data to another device are separate behaviors. Edge can retain your favorites, passwords, and settings on the computer where the update occurs even if you never sign in or enable sync.

What sync adds
When you sign in to Edge and turn on synchronization, selected profile data can become available on other signed-in devices. Microsoft lists favorites, passwords, browsing history, extensions, settings, open tabs, autofill entries, payment information, and other profile data among the categories that can synchronize.
To review those choices, open Settings > Profiles > Sync. Each category can be switched on or off. Sync is useful if you need to recover information on another device, but it does not change the basic promise that a local Edge update keeps the profile on the updated computer.

Why Edge asks you to restart
The restart is the handoff between downloading and running the new browser version. Edge can place the update package on the device while you continue browsing, but active browser processes may still be using the older files. Restarting closes those processes and lets Edge replace or activate the updated components.
A restart prompt does not mean that your profile has been deleted or that a reset is underway. It usually means the package is ready to apply. Save any active work, close pages that cannot tolerate interruption, and then use the Restart control on the About page.
How update timing differs by device and policy
Metered networks
On a metered connection, Edge may not download automatically. Open edge://settings/help, review the message, and explicitly allow the download if the data cost is acceptable. If you are using cellular tethering, check the operating system’s metered status and your data plan before proceeding.
Work or school management
An employer or school can manage Edge through policy. The update setting may be unavailable or appear dimmed, and administrators can configure disabled updates, always-allow behavior, manual-only updates, or automatic-silent updates. If the About page does not offer controls that personal installations normally show, ask the organization’s administrator rather than trying to bypass the policy.
Platform and channel differences
Update behavior and available policy controls differ between Windows, macOS, and other supported platforms, and between managed and unmanaged installations. Do not apply a schedule documented for one service to every Edge installation.
A scoped cadence example
Microsoft’s Windows Autopatch documentation describes its managed service as checking for Edge updates every 10 hours, delivering quality updates weekly by default, and progressively rolling out feature updates about every four weeks. Those figures describe Windows Autopatch, not a universal schedule for every consumer copy of Edge or every update channel.
What to do when Edge will not update
- Read the exact status. Open
edge://settings/helpand record the message, error text, and whether the page shows Download and install, Restart, or an up-to-date result. - Confirm connectivity. Test another website, then check whether a VPN, proxy, captive portal, or unstable Wi-Fi connection is interfering. Temporarily use a known-working connection if your organization permits it.
- Check metered status. If the connection is metered, approve the download or switch to an unrestricted connection. Remember that a permitted download can use billable data.
- Consider management policy. On a work or school device, contact the administrator. A policy can intentionally block updates, require manual installation, or control the release channel.
- Check filtering and firewall rules. Security software, firewalls, DNS filters, or network gateways must allow the Microsoft update and download endpoints required by Edge. The network administrator may need to review blocked requests.
- Finish the restart. If the update downloaded successfully, select Restart. If Microsoft’s guidance asks for a computer restart, restart Windows after saving your work.
- Use Microsoft’s repair or reinstall path if necessary. If installation remains broken, follow Microsoft’s current Windows repair procedure for Edge. Its support guidance says browser data and settings should not be affected by that repair procedure, but save important work and ensure you know your sign-in details before making system changes.
How to interpret common outcomes
- “Restart” appears repeatedly: Edge may be unable to complete the handoff. Finish a full browser restart, then check the About page again.
- No download control on a managed computer: Policy may be controlling updates; ask the administrator.
- Download stops on mobile broadband: The connection may be metered or filtering the required traffic.
- Update succeeds but a tab is missing: Use the restore-window command or Ctrl+Shift+T, and check whether the missing page was InPrivate or contained unsaved work.
A safe update routine
- Save documents, messages, forms, and uploads before restarting.
- Close or pause work that cannot survive a browser restart.
- Check
edge://settings/helpand note whether the update still needs downloading or only needs a restart. - On a metered connection, approve the download only when the data cost is acceptable.
- After Edge reopens, verify the profile, favorites, and a few important tabs.
- If something is missing, try the restore-window command or Ctrl+Shift+T immediately.
The practical distinction is simple: an Edge update changes browser software, while your local favorites, passwords, and settings remain preserved. A restart can interrupt the session, but the documented idle-update flow restores ordinary tabs; InPrivate sessions and unsaved page work are the exceptions to plan around. Sync is optional and extends selected data to other signed-in devices—it is not required to keep the profile on the computer being updated.
