Use the same Microsoft account on every device where you play Minecraft. That account is the identity Minecraft checks for eligible purchases, Minecoins, Marketplace content, Realms, subscriptions and cross-platform social features. However, console storefront rules still apply: PlayStation exposes eligible non-exclusive purchases from the linked account, while purchases made on Nintendo Switch remain tied to that Nintendo account. Bedrock worlds can move through Realms, Xbox cloud saves follow the Microsoft account, and Java worlds remain on the computer unless you transfer them yourself.
What linking a Microsoft account actually changes
A Microsoft sign-in connects your Minecraft player identity across supported platforms. It enables cross-platform play, Realms, Marketplace access, subscriptions, parental controls, social features and multiplayer servers. Minecraft describes these benefits in its account requirements guidance: linking a Microsoft account provides cross-platform play, subscriptions and Marketplace purchases across platforms, parental controls, social features, Minecraft Realms and other multiplayer servers.

How purchases and Minecoins follow your account
Minecoins and Marketplace content
Minecoins are the currency used in the Minecraft Marketplace. For Bedrock and Minecraft Legends, Minecraft Help states that Minecoins carry over between games when you sign in with the Microsoft account used to purchase them: Minecraft Minecoin Buying and Spending FAQ. Eligible Marketplace content is likewise associated with that Microsoft account, subject to the platform store’s restrictions.

- Minecoins let you buy Minecraft content you can enjoy on your Android, iOS, Windows 10, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch devices*
- Visit the in-game Minecraft marketplace, where you'll discover a constantly updating library of exciting new Minecraft content - from a community whose imagination knows no limits.
- Once you've redeemed your Minecoins, they'll be linked with your Xbox Live account, so you can access your coins and purchases through all of your supported devices that run Minecraft.
- Minecoins are a perfect gift for Minecraft players!
Prepaid Minecoins cards may be sold through retailers, so a card redeemed to the wrong Microsoft account will not automatically move to the account you intended. Confirm the account shown in the game before redeeming a card or buying Minecoins. A balance is not a transferable gift between Microsoft accounts.
PlayStation purchases
On PlayStation, linking your Microsoft account makes non-exclusive Marketplace content purchased with that account available on other supported platforms. Purchases made in the PlayStation Minecraft Store use Minecraft Tokens, and the PlayStation account retains PlayStation purchases and unspent Tokens if you later unlink the Microsoft account.
Recommended Free Tools
A PlayStation Network account can have only one Microsoft account linked to it. If the wrong Microsoft account was connected, you must unlink it before signing in with a different one. Unlinking removes access to cross-platform purchases, cross-platform play and Realms until another Microsoft account is linked.
Nintendo Switch purchases
Nintendo Switch is the important storefront exception. Purchases made in Minecraft on Switch are not available on other platforms, even when the same Microsoft account is used elsewhere. If you sign out, unspent Minecoins and purchases made on the current Nintendo account remain there; they do not move to another Nintendo account or become a general Microsoft-account balance.

- MINECRAFT MARKETPLACE — Browse a constantly updating library of content from Minecraft creators, with new content available every week.
- CREATOR-MADE CONTENT — Use Minecoins to get Marketplace content such as skin packs, mash-up packs, mini-games, and adventure maps.
- ACCESS ACROSS DEVICES — Once redeemed and linked to your Microsoft account, your Minecoins and purchases are available on supported devices that run Minecraft, including Android, iOS, Windows, and Xbox.
- A GIFT FOR PLAYERS — Give Minecraft players Minecoins to spend on content in the in-game Marketplace.
While signed out on Switch, you also lose cross-platform friends and Realms access until you sign in again. This is an access change, not a deletion of the Switch purchase.
How worlds and saves move between devices
Bedrock: use Realms for a reliable transfer
Minecraft’s documented Bedrock transfer method is Realms. The service lets you upload a single-player world to the cloud and download it on another device for continued play: Use Realms to Transfer a Bedrock Edition World to Another Device. You need an active Realms trial or paid subscription, the same Microsoft account on both devices and current game versions.

- On the original device, sign in to the Microsoft account that owns the Realms trial or subscription.
- Open the Bedrock world list, choose the world you want to move and use the option to upload or replace a Realm world.
- On the destination device, install or update Minecraft so both devices use compatible versions.
- Sign in with the same Microsoft account, open the Realm and choose the option to download the world to the local device.
- Look in the local worlds list for a copy named World name – Copy. Play that downloaded copy after checking that the terrain, builds and inventories are present.
Realms is a transfer path for Bedrock worlds, not a license that makes Java worlds appear in Bedrock. Keep the original world until you have opened and checked the downloaded copy.
Xbox: cloud saves are account-bound
When an Xbox is online and signed in, Minecraft backs up supported worlds to Xbox cloud storage under the Microsoft account. A cloud-only world can be downloaded to another Xbox when you use that same account. A world that exists only on the console’s local storage remains on that device until it is uploaded, so do not assume that every local world has already been backed up.

- The classic UNO card game builds fun on game night with a Minecraft theme.
- UNO Minecraft features a deck and storage tin decorated with graphics from the popular video game.
- Players match colors and numbers to the card on top of the discard pile as in the classic game.
- The Creeper card unique to this deck forces other players to draw 3 cards.
- Makes a great gift for kid, teen, adult and family game nights with 2 to 10 players ages 7 years and older, especially Minecraft and video game fans.
Java Edition: local files and player identity are separate issues
Java single-player worlds are stored on the computer’s local drive. Signing in on another computer does not automatically copy them; you must transfer the world files or use another backup method yourself. The Microsoft account must also own Java Edition before the Launcher will let you play it.
Changing accounts can alter the player data inside a Java multiplayer world. If a different Microsoft account enters an existing world, Minecraft treats that account as a new player: it starts at the default spawn without the previous player’s inventory or identity. The old base and stored items may still exist in the world, so the new player can recover them by traveling to the relevant locations, but the former inventory does not follow the account change.

Microsoft account linking is required for cross-platform multiplayer on Bedrock. Bedrock players can join Bedrock worlds, Realms and compatible servers across supported consoles, Windows devices and mobile devices. Java players join Java-hosted games. Linking does not make Java and Bedrock multiplayer-compatible; every participant still needs the same edition and a compatible, current game version.
| Situation | What is required | What linking provides |
|---|---|---|
| Bedrock crossplay | Microsoft sign-in, matching Bedrock version and the host’s multiplayer settings | Friends, Realms and supported servers across platforms |
| Java multiplayer | Java Edition ownership, Microsoft sign-in and a compatible Java version | Java profile and access to Java multiplayer; no automatic Bedrock crossplay |
| Console online play | Microsoft sign-in plus the platform’s online service: Xbox Game Pass Core, PlayStation Plus or Nintendo Switch Online | Online console multiplayer in addition to Minecraft account features |
| Child account | Microsoft family settings must allow multiplayer and communication | Only the permissions granted by the parent or family administrator |
On PlayStation, the linked account enables Realms multiplayer with people on other platforms. On Switch and mobile, signing in is likewise necessary for crossplay. A Microsoft account does not replace a console’s separate online-subscription requirement.

What happens if you link the wrong account
PlayStation
First, stop making purchases and verify the account shown in Minecraft’s profile or account screen. Because one PlayStation Network account supports only one linked Microsoft account, correcting the mistake requires unlinking before another account can be used.
After unlinking, PlayStation purchases and unspent Tokens remain with the PlayStation account. You temporarily lose access to Marketplace purchases made on other platforms, cross-platform play and Realms. Linking the intended Microsoft account restores those account-based features, but it does not merge the two Microsoft accounts or move purchases between them.
Nintendo Switch
Signing out of Microsoft on Switch leaves Switch-made purchases and unspent Minecoins with the Nintendo account that made them. While signed out, cross-platform friends and Realms are unavailable. Sign back in with the account that owns the desired cross-platform entitlements to restore those services; do not expect a Switch storefront purchase to become portable.
General recovery for service errors
If Marketplace content, downloadable content, authentication or other game services fail to load, Minecraft’s reset guidance recommends signing out and then signing back in. Before doing so, note the exact Microsoft account and gamertag currently in use, and avoid deleting local worlds while troubleshooting.

A platform-by-platform decision guide
| Platform | Microsoft sign-in | Purchase behavior | World transfer or saves | Unlinking or switching accounts |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| PlayStation | Required for crossplay, Realms and account-based Marketplace access | Eligible non-exclusive purchases from the linked Microsoft account can appear elsewhere; PlayStation purchases and Tokens stay with PlayStation | Bedrock worlds can be moved through Realms; Xbox cloud saves do not apply as PlayStation storage | Only one Microsoft account can be linked to a PSN account; unlinking removes cross-platform access until another account is linked |
| Xbox | Required for the Microsoft identity and online features | Eligible account purchases and Minecoins follow the purchasing Microsoft account, subject to store rules | Online Xbox worlds can be backed up to cloud storage tied to that account; local-only worlds remain local | Switching accounts changes which cloud saves and entitlements are visible |
| Nintendo Switch | Required for crossplay, friends and Realms | Purchases made on Switch remain tied to the Nintendo account; they are not portable to other platforms | Use the Bedrock Realms method for a cross-device world transfer | Signing out leaves Switch purchases and unspent Minecoins on the Nintendo account and disables cross-platform services while signed out |
| Windows PC Bedrock | Use the Microsoft account that owns the game and purchases | Marketplace and Minecoins are checked against that account | Use Realms for Bedrock transfer; local worlds are otherwise local to the PC | Signing in with another account can hide the original entitlements |
| Windows PC Java | Use the account that owns Java Edition | Java ownership is account-specific and separate from Marketplace portability | Worlds remain on the local drive unless manually copied; player inventory is tied to the account identity in a multiplayer world | A different account may be treated as a new player |
| Mobile | Required for crossplay, Realms and account-based Marketplace access | Eligible content follows the Microsoft account, with storefront restrictions | Use Realms to move Bedrock worlds to another device | Signing in with the wrong account can make the expected content appear missing until the correct account is restored |
PC Java and Bedrock ownership
Java Edition and Bedrock Edition became a single PC bundle on June 7, 2022. The Launcher and Microsoft Store show ownership only after you sign in with the Microsoft account that bought the bundle. The product is commonly labeled Minecraft: Java & Bedrock Edition for PC; check the current store listing before buying because retailer formats and availability can change.

A legacy Mojang account that was not migrated by that deadline cannot be used as a substitute for the Microsoft account now required by the PC Launcher.
Pre-link checklist
- Read the Microsoft email address and gamertag shown in the account picker.
- Confirm that this is the account that bought Java Edition, the PC bundle, Minecoins or Marketplace content.
- On PlayStation, remember that the PSN account can have only one Microsoft account linked.
- On Switch, separate Nintendo-account purchases from Microsoft-account purchases; Switch purchases remain platform-bound.
- Back up important local Java or Bedrock worlds before changing accounts.
- For a Bedrock transfer, verify that the Realms trial or subscription is active and both devices are updated.
- For multiplayer, confirm matching edition and version, console online service membership and any child-account permissions.
Common problems and the correct fix
“My Minecoins or Marketplace items are missing.”
Sign out only after recording the current account, then sign back in with the Microsoft account that purchased or redeemed the content. On Switch, check the Nintendo account used for the purchase; on PlayStation, check whether the item is a PlayStation-exclusive purchase or an eligible non-exclusive item.
“My world is not on the new device.”
For Bedrock, upload the world to Realms and download it on the destination device; look for the automatically created “World name – Copy.” For Xbox, check whether the original world was cloud-backed or local-only. For Java, copy the local world files because account linking alone does not transfer them.
“I can see my friend’s platform but cannot join.”
Check that both players use Bedrock or both use Java, update to compatible versions, confirm that the host has enabled multiplayer and verify the console online subscription. A Microsoft account link cannot bridge the Java and Bedrock editions.
