The key difference is that these terms classify fossils on different axes. Microfossil describes size: the Natural History Museum uses it for a fossil less than 1 millimetre across. Body fossil describes preserved material from an organism, while trace fossil records an organism’s activity or interaction rather than its body part. A tiny shell can therefore be both a microfossil and a body fossil, whereas a large trackway can be a trace fossil.
Once you separate size from the kind of evidence preserved, the apparent conflict disappears. The useful questions are: how large is the fossil, what exactly has been preserved, and what can that evidence legitimately tell us?

The three labels answer different questions
“Microfossil,” “body fossil,” and “trace fossil” are not three competing size categories. Microfossil is primarily a measurement-based label. Body fossil and trace fossil describe the relationship between the fossil and the organism that produced it.

| Microfossil | Size: less than 1 millimetre across, according to the Natural History Museum | Tiny shells, foraminifera, pollen, microscopic organisms, small bone or tooth fragments | Small organisms, fragments of larger organisms, and sometimes past environments or climate |
| Body fossil | Physical remains or parts of an organism | Bones, teeth, shells, wood, leaves | Anatomy and which organisms lived in a particular place and time |
| Trace fossil | Evidence of biological activity or interaction, not the maker’s body part itself | Footprints, trackways, trails, burrows, root traces, coprolites | Behavior, movement, feeding, dwelling, growth, and interactions with an environment |
The first row can overlap with either of the other rows. A microscopic shell is a microfossil by size and a body fossil by evidence type. A fossilized burrow or footprint is a trace fossil regardless of whether the preserved structure is small or large.

What counts as a microfossil?
The Natural History Museum defines a microfossil as any fossil less than one millimetre across. That threshold is a practical way to distinguish specimens that generally require a microscope or other magnification from fossils that can be examined easily by eye. It is a statement about dimensions, not about whether the fossil is a body or a trace.
Microfossils may be complete organisms or fragments
Some microfossils are entire microscopic organisms or their shells. Foraminifera are a familiar example: their tiny shells can accumulate in marine sediments and later become part of the fossil record. Pollen grains are another example cited by the British Geological Survey. Other microfossils are pieces of organisms that were much larger when alive, such as a minute bone or tooth fragment.
That distinction matters when interpreting a sample. Finding a microscopic tooth does not mean the animal itself was microscopic. It means only that the preserved piece is under the size threshold. The surrounding rock, associated fossils, and geological setting are needed to infer the size and identity of the original animal.
Why microfossils are scientifically useful
Because they are small and often abundant, microfossils can provide information from sediments that contain few conspicuous fossils. Assemblages of microscopic shells, pollen, or other remains can help indicate which organisms lived in or around a deposit. In suitable settings, their distribution also contributes evidence about former environments and climate.
Microfossils do not automatically provide a more precise picture than larger specimens. A fragment may preserve very little anatomy, and a single grain can be transported away from where its organism lived. Interpretation depends on preservation, abundance, geological context, and whether the specimen is complete enough to identify.

What is a body fossil?
A body fossil is preserved physical material from an organism. Bones, teeth, shells, wood, and leaves all fit this category. The National Park Service explains that body fossils are especially useful for studying anatomy: the shape and arrangement of preserved structures can show what an organism looked like and help identify relationships among organisms.
Body fossils span microscopic to very large sizes
A body fossil may be smaller than a millimetre, such as a pollen grain or tiny shell, or much larger, such as a mammal bone, tree trunk, or ammonite shell. “Large fossil” is therefore an informal description rather than a formal counterpart to “microfossil.” The size of a body fossil can reflect the original organism, the part that was preserved, or how the fossil was broken and transported.
What body fossils cannot show by themselves
Body remains are not a complete biography of an organism. Soft tissues and organs rarely fossilize, and fossilization can alter, compress, dissolve, or replace original material. Color, behavior, posture in life, and many biological details may be absent. A well-preserved skeleton can reveal anatomy while leaving feeding habits or social behavior uncertain.
What is a trace fossil?
A trace fossil records activity, behavior, or interaction with the environment. The fossilized structure is the activity’s result rather than the organism’s body part as such. Footprints and trackways record movement; burrows record dwelling or excavation; trails can record movement across a sediment surface; root traces record plant growth; and coprolites are fossilized feces that record feeding and digestion.
Traces preserve behavior that bodies may not reveal
The National Park Service distinguishes the evidentiary value of the two categories: body fossils are generally stronger evidence for anatomy, while trace fossils can reveal behavior that would otherwise be unknown. A skeleton may show that an animal had a particular limb, but a trackway can show how that limb was used during walking. A burrow can indicate that an organism occupied or modified sediment even when its body was never preserved there.

The maker is not always identifiable
A trace fossil is evidence of an activity, but it is not necessarily a direct identification of the organism that made it. Different animals can produce similar footprints or burrows, and the maker may have left no body remains nearby. Scientists compare the trace’s shape, size, sediment, age, and association with body fossils before proposing an attribution.

How the categories overlap
The cleanest way to classify a specimen is to apply both questions separately: what is its size, and what kind of evidence does it preserve?
| Specimen or structure | Size label | Evidence label | Reason |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tiny shell under 1 mm | Microfossil | Body fossil | The shell is physical material from an organism and meets the size threshold. |
| Small pollen grain | Microfossil | Body fossil | The grain is preserved biological material, even though it is microscopic. |
| Minute bone or tooth fragment | Microfossil | Body fossil | The fragment is under 1 mm, but it is part of an organism’s body. |
| Ammonite shell visible to the eye | Not a microfossil | Body fossil | It is a larger preserved shell, a physical body part. |
| Fossilized footprint or trackway | Usually larger, but size varies | Trace fossil | It records movement rather than preserving the foot itself. |
| Burrow or root trace | Size varies | Trace fossil | It records excavation, dwelling, or growth in sediment. |
This framework also explains why “larger fossil” is not a single scientific category. A large bone is a large body fossil, while a large trackway is a large trace fossil. Conversely, a body fossil can be microscopic, and a trace fossil can be relatively small. The labels should not be treated as mutually exclusive bins.
What each type can tell you
Anatomy and identity: the strength of body fossils
Teeth, bones, shells, wood, and leaves preserve structures that can be compared with living or other fossil organisms. Their shape, microscopic texture, and arrangement may help establish identity, evolutionary relationships, or functional anatomy. A complete specimen generally provides more information than a fragment, but even a fragment can be diagnostic when its features are distinctive.
Behavior and interaction: the strength of trace fossils
Tracks can show direction, stride, group movement, or the way an animal placed its feet. Burrows can indicate sheltering, feeding, or sediment mixing. Root traces can reveal where plants grew, and coprolites can preserve evidence of diet or digestion. These interpretations remain contextual: a trace records an action, but the precise motive or species responsible may remain uncertain.

Environment and time: common uses of microfossil assemblages
Microscopic fossils can occur in large numbers and in successive sediment layers. Changes in the types and proportions of foraminifera, pollen, or other microfossils may help reconstruct past environments. Such conclusions are strongest when the assemblage is well preserved and the fossils are not substantially reworked from older rocks.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why some organisms fossilize and others do not
Fossil evidence is selective. The National Park Service notes that rapid burial can protect remains from scavenging, decomposition, and decay. Hard parts are generally more likely to persist than soft tissues. Shells, teeth, bones, and woody material therefore appear more often in the record than muscles, skin, internal organs, or other delicate tissues.
After burial, groundwater chemistry, pressure, erosion, and later geological alteration can change or destroy the original material. A trace may survive because the sediment around a footprint or burrow hardened, even though the animal itself disappeared. In another setting, the body may be buried and preserved while its tracks are erased by currents or later disturbance.
These filters create a preservation bias. The fossils found in a rock are not a complete inventory of all organisms that lived nearby, and the absence of a body or trace is not proof that the activity or organism never existed.
A practical method for identifying an unfamiliar fossil
Use the following sequence before assigning a label. It prevents size from being confused with evidence type.
Best Value
- Measure the preserved structure. If it is less than 1 millimetre across, it fits the Natural History Museum’s microfossil size definition. Record whether you measured the whole specimen or only a fragment.
- Ask what is physically preserved. A shell, tooth, bone, leaf, wood fragment, or other anatomical material points toward a body fossil. A footprint, trail, burrow, root pattern, or coprolite points toward a trace fossil.
- Separate the specimen from its maker. A tiny fragment may come from a large animal. A footprint may be large even though the foot itself is absent. Do not infer the organism’s full size from the fossil’s dimensions alone.
- Examine the sediment and location. Look for layering, burrow walls, repeated steps, surrounding grains, associated body fossils, and signs of transport or weathering. Context often distinguishes an in-place trace from an isolated object.
- State the conclusion with both labels when appropriate. “Microfossil and body fossil” is more precise than choosing one term when both apply. For a trackway, use “trace fossil” and describe its size separately.
Common misunderstandings
“Microfossil” does not mean “trace fossil”
Microscopic size says nothing by itself about whether the specimen is a body remain or a trace. A pollen grain and a tiny shell are body fossils even though they are microfossils.
“Larger fossil” is not the opposite of “microfossil” in every classification
Large and small are size descriptions. Body and trace are evidence descriptions. A visible trilobite or ammonite is commonly discussed as a larger body fossil, but a large trackway is a trace fossil.
A trace fossil is not necessarily a fossilized body part
The preserved surface may look like an impression, but the fossil records the activity that made it. A footprint is not the fossilized foot; it is the sedimentary mark left by the foot.

Body fossils can be excellent for anatomy but weak for behavior. Trace fossils can document behavior but may not identify the maker precisely. Microfossils can illuminate environments while providing only fragmentary anatomy. Each type supplies a different part of the evidence.
How to describe a fossil accurately
A careful description combines the axes instead of forcing a single category. For example:
- “A sub-millimetre shell, classified as a microfossil and a body fossil.”
- “A large vertebrate bone, a body fossil that is not a microfossil.”
- “A fossilized trackway, a trace fossil that records movement; its size should be reported separately.”
- “A pollen grain in sediment, a microfossil and body fossil that may provide environmental evidence.”
This wording tells readers what was preserved and how large it is without implying that one label replaces the other.
Bottom line: classify size and evidence separately
Microfossil means less than 1 millimetre across under the Natural History Museum’s definition. Body fossil means preserved organismal material. Trace fossil means preserved activity or interaction. A specimen can carry more than one label: a tiny shell is both a microfossil and a body fossil, while a trackway can be a large trace fossil. The most reliable interpretation also accounts for preservation bias, geological context, and the limits of what any fossil can show.
