Chemical weathering is the alteration, dissolution, recrystallization, or replacement of minerals through chemical reactions. In a fossil, the two processes are not mutually exclusive: decay can change local chemistry and help minerals preserve a body’s shape, while later mineral alteration or weathering can modify that mineral record. The most accurate explanation follows the specimen through its entire taphonomic history rather than assigning every change to one cause.
The short answer: biology acts on tissues, chemistry acts on minerals
A dead organism enters a sequence of processes called taphonomy. The U.S. National Park Service defines taphonomy as “the study of what happens to the remains of an organism between the time that it dies and when it becomes fossilized.” That history can begin at the surface, continue during transport and burial, and extend through later exposure and erosion.

Microbial decay starts with organisms and their organic compounds. Bacteria, fungi, and other microbes consume or chemically break down tissues, especially labile soft tissue. Their activity can erase structures, but it also produces chemical gradients and reaction products. Under suitable conditions, those gradients encourage minerals to precipitate around or within a decaying body, preserving an impression or mineral replica of tissue that no longer exists.
Chemical weathering and related mineral alteration act primarily on minerals. Water, dissolved gases, acidity, and other chemical conditions can dissolve original mineral, recrystallize it into a different form, or replace it with another mineral. The result may retain the organism’s outline while changing its composition and reducing fine detail. Weathering is one part of this longer history; comparable mineral transformations can happen during burial as fossilization and diagenesis.

Therefore, a fossil can record both processes in sequence. Microbes may remove the original tissue and help create an early mineral copy. Burial may then cause further dissolution, cementation, recrystallization, or replacement. After exhumation, groundwater and surface exposure may weather the fossil and its surrounding rock.
What microbial decay does after death
It dismantles organic tissues
Microbial decay is decomposition. Microbes use organic molecules as energy and carbon sources, breaking down cell contents and structural compounds. The process can collapse soft tissues, separate body parts, and remove chemical information before mineralization begins. Decay usually starts soon after death, although temperature, oxygen availability, water movement, burial speed, and the organism’s biology influence how quickly and how far it proceeds.
Different tissues do not decay at the same pace. Labile soft tissue is generally lost earlier than more resistant structures. That selective loss explains why many fossils preserve hard parts more readily than complete soft bodies. It also means that an apparently complete fossil may represent a resistant framework or a mineralized copy rather than unchanged original tissue.
It changes the chemistry around the carcass
Decay is not only destructive. As microbes consume tissue, they release dissolved compounds and alter conditions such as oxygen availability and chemical gradients immediately around the remains. Derek E. G. Briggs’s review of decay and mineralization describes how these gradients can support rapid authigenic mineral growth—the formation of minerals in place during early preservation.
Minerals may nucleate on, within, or next to decaying tissues. If mineral growth occurs quickly enough, it can replicate the shape of a soft body before that shape collapses completely. The resulting fossil records morphology, but the original organic molecules may be gone. In this sense, microbial activity can be part of a preservation pathway, not simply an enemy of preservation.

Its preservation effect depends on conditions
Microbial activity alone does not guarantee preservation. Mineral supply, the chemistry of pore water, the kind of tissue present, the rate of burial, and the balance between decay and mineral growth all matter. Rapid mineralization may protect a structure; slower or more extensive decay may destroy it before a stable replica forms.
That dependence also explains why exceptional soft-tissue fossils are uncommon. They require several biological and geological conditions to align. A preserved outline is evidence that the shape survived a series of transformations, not proof that decay never occurred.
What chemical weathering and mineral alteration do
Dissolution removes original mineral
Dissolution occurs when minerals in a shell, bone, sediment, or earlier fossil react with water and dissolved chemicals and enter solution. Once the original material is removed, the surrounding sediment may retain a cavity or surface impression. If that cavity later fills with sediment or a new mineral, the fossil can survive as a mold or replacement even though its first mineral composition is absent.
Recrystallization changes the mineral fabric
Recrystallization reorganizes a mineral into a different crystal texture or crystal size without necessarily erasing the object’s overall shape. This can obscure microscopic features and alter the material’s physical properties. A fossil that looks intact at hand-sample scale may therefore have a substantially changed internal fabric.
Replacement substitutes new mineral for old
During replacement, the original mineral dissolves while another mineral occupies the same space. The process can preserve an external outline or internal structure while changing composition. Replacement is a fossilization and diagenetic process that may occur during burial; it should not automatically be labeled surface weathering.

Weathering continues after exhumation
When erosion exposes fossil-bearing rock, rainwater, groundwater, oxygen, and changing temperatures can attack both fossil and matrix. Surface weathering may open cracks, remove unstable minerals, soften relief, and erase details that survived burial. Exhumation is therefore another stage in taphonomy, not the end of the story.

How the processes fit into a fossil’s complete history
1. Death and early decay
After death, tissues begin to break down. Transport, scavenging, abrasion, and the time spent at the surface can remove or deform parts before burial. Microbial decay proceeds at the same time, altering the remains and their immediate chemical environment.
2. Burial and early mineralization
Burial limits some physical disturbance and changes access to oxygen and circulating water. If the chemistry is favorable, minerals can precipitate in pores or around decaying tissues. This may create a three-dimensional mineral copy, an early cement, or a coating that stabilizes shape.
3. Diagenesis
As sediment is compacted and groundwater moves through it, the fossil and surrounding rock continue to react. Original minerals may dissolve, recrystallize, or be replaced. Pore spaces may be filled by mineral cement, and earlier microbial signals can be overprinted by later reactions.
4. Metamorphism or deeper alteration
Some fossil-bearing rocks experience elevated temperature, pressure, or chemically active fluids. These conditions can modify minerals and destroy delicate structures while leaving a more resistant outline. The degree of alteration determines how much of the early record remains readable.

5. Exhumation and surface weathering
Erosion brings the rock back to the surface. Weathering can attack both the fossil and its matrix, expose internal surfaces, and gradually remove relief. A specimen collected today may therefore show a combination of early decay-related preservation, burial alteration, and recent weathering.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why shape does not prove original material survived
One of the most important interpretive rules is to separate morphology from composition. A fossil can preserve the outline, branching pattern, skin fold, shell ornament, or other form through mineral replacement or an impression in sediment. That visual fidelity does not establish that the original organic chemistry remains.
The reverse is also possible: chemical remnants may survive without a clear three-dimensional shape if decay, compaction, or weathering destroyed the structure. Fossil preservation is selective and cumulative. Burial, decay, mineralization, diagenesis, metamorphism, weathering, and exhumation each filter what remains available to observe.
Hard parts are generally more resistant than soft tissues, but “hard” does not mean chemically immutable. A resistant shell or bone can dissolve, recrystallize, or be replaced. A soft-tissue outline can be preserved as a mineral film or mold. Interpretation must therefore ask both what shape is present and what material now carries it.

Start with the preserved material
Ask whether the specimen consists of recognizable original mineral, a replacement mineral, a sediment-filled cavity, a surface impression, or a mixture. The visible form alone cannot answer that question.

Separate burial alteration from surface weathering
Mineral changes formed during burial are part of fossilization and diagenesis. Surface weathering is associated with later exposure. A chemically altered fossil is not automatically a weathered fossil, and a weathered surface may conceal earlier replacement or recrystallization.
Look for selective loss and overprinting
Prefer explanations that account for multiple stages. Loss of soft tissue is consistent with decay, while a mineral rim or replica may reflect decay-associated mineralization. Cracks, etched surfaces, or softened relief may indicate later weathering. These observations can coexist rather than compete.
Keep the limits of a visual diagnosis clear
General descriptions can distinguish the processes conceptually, but the information summarized here does not establish a diagnostic laboratory test for separating microbial signatures from later chemical alteration in a particular specimen. Mineralogical, chemical, microscopic, and geological context would be needed for a specimen-specific conclusion.

“Microbes only destroy fossils.”
Microbes do destroy organic tissues, but their decay chemistry can also create gradients that promote mineral growth and preserve soft-tissue morphology. The correct description is a balance of loss and potential mineralization.
“Chemical weathering starts only after a fossil reaches the surface.”
Related chemical transformations can occur during burial. Dissolution, recrystallization, and replacement are part of diagenesis and fossilization as well as later weathering. Surface exposure adds another opportunity for chemical change.
“A detailed shape means the original tissue is still there.”
Shape may survive as a mold, impression, or mineral replacement after the original material has dissolved. Morphological fidelity and chemical continuity are separate claims.
“One process must explain the whole specimen.”
Taphonomy is cumulative. Early decay, mineral precipitation, burial alteration, metamorphism, and weathering can all contribute to the final fossil. A layered explanation is usually more realistic than a single-process label.
A practical sequence for describing a fossil
- Document the context. Record the rock, bedding position, degree of burial or exposure, and whether the surface appears freshly broken or weathered.
- Describe what is actually preserved. Distinguish organic residue, original-looking mineral, replacement, cement, mold, and impression where the evidence allows.
- Consider early decay. Ask which tissues could have been removed and whether microbial activity could have changed the local chemistry before mineralization.
- Consider burial alteration. Evaluate whether dissolution, recrystallization, permineralization, or replacement could have changed composition while retaining shape.
- Consider later exposure. Look for surface etching, softened relief, open fractures, or selective loss that could reflect weathering after exhumation.
- State uncertainty precisely. Say that a feature is consistent with a process when the available observation cannot establish a unique cause.
Bottom line for interpreting fossil preservation
Microbial decay is a biological process that breaks down organic remains and can simultaneously create the chemical conditions for mineralization. Chemical weathering is a mineral-altering process that dissolves, recrystallizes, or replaces material during burial or after exposure. Because these processes can operate one after another and influence one another, a fossil’s final appearance is a cumulative record. Preserved shape may be real and informative even when the original tissue and its chemistry have been replaced or removed.
