Media framing shapes which parts of scientific research audiences see first, how much attention those parts receive, and what they may seem to mean. A report can foreground a result’s certainty, its risks, a disagreement, or its everyday consequences. That emphasis can influence interpretation without changing the underlying study—and it does not, by itself, show that a journalist intended to mislead.

Evidence from studies of television, climate coverage, opioid research, and ocean-plastic reporting shows several ways frames appear in real coverage. It does not establish that one frame always changes people’s beliefs in a predictable way.

What media framing means in science reporting

The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine defines framing as “casting information in a certain light to influence what people think, believe, or do.” In a science story, the frame is the organizing emphasis through which readers encounter research: what issue the story defines, what evidence it highlights, whose perspective it includes, and which responses it makes visible.

For example, climate change can be presented primarily as an environmental risk, a public-health risk, or an opportunity for innovation and economic development. Those accounts can draw on the same broad subject while directing attention toward different consequences and possible actions. The National Academies notes that frames operate across channels including conversation, public debate, and media reports.

Framing is not the same as falsifying a result. A report’s emphasis may be fair or incomplete, intentional or incidental. Foregrounding uncertainty can reflect genuine limits in the evidence; foregrounding a striking finding can leave caveats less prominent without making the finding false. To assess a story, separate what the underlying research says from the way the story organizes and presents it.

How framing enters a science story

Framing begins before a headline is written. Journalistic decisions about which research to cover, how much space or airtime to give it, which perspectives to include, and how long to sustain attention can shape what appears important and credible. Wording and visuals also matter, but they are only part of the process.

  • Selection: Which study, result, or part of a report becomes the story—and which relevant findings do not?
  • Emphasis: Does the report lead with a result, uncertainty, disagreement, risk, cost, or practical consequence?
  • Context: Does it explain whether the research is preliminary, part of a wider body of evidence, or limited by its methods?
  • Sources and perspectives: Whose expertise or experience is included, and are different kinds of disagreement distinguished?
  • Presentation: Do the headline, images, examples, and narrative make the finding seem dramatic, routine, personal, or abstract?
  • Duration and prominence: How much coverage does the issue receive, and how long does it remain in public view?

These choices can affect which issues seem worthy of concern and how audiences judge scientific credibility. They do not guarantee a particular reaction: the same emphasis may be interpreted differently depending on the audience, topic, and surrounding information.

What case studies show about frames

Researchers have identified different ways of representing uncertainty, agreement, risks, and consequences in particular bodies of science coverage. The categories below come from separate studies with different samples and purposes. They are useful examples, not a single universal classification system for science news.

Study and material Frames or findings reported What the case illustrates
Ruhrmann and colleagues, 2013: 207 film clips from science television programs about molecular medicine Scientific Uncertainty and Controversy; Scientifically Certain Data; Everyday Medical Risks; Conflicting Scientific Evidence Coverage can portray findings as certain or uncertain, foreground risk, or emphasize conflicting evidence. The sample is specific to television coverage of molecular medicine.
O’Neill and colleagues, 2015: UK and US broadcast, print, and Twitter coverage related to the IPCC Fifth Assessment Report Settled Science; Uncertain Science; Political or Ideological Struggle; Role of Science; Disaster or Security; Economics; Morality and Ethics Frames and attention differed by outlet and by working group. The study reported less coverage of Working Group III than of Working Groups I and II.
2020 study of opioid research in online news, published in Frontiers in Communication Valid science; Uncertain science; Controversial science The way online stories portray trust, preliminary findings, and disagreement can represent research differently. Its frame categories and findings concern opioid research in online news.
Vonk, Bos, and van Sebille, 2025-05-28: EGUsphere preprint examining ocean-plastic research in university press releases and newspaper articles Analysis of problem definitions, causes, moral judgments, solutions, personalization, dramatization, and emotionalization Framing may develop along the route from institutional press materials to news coverage. This is a case-specific preprint, not settled peer-reviewed consensus.

The IPCC study also suggested that the report’s three-part sequence, as well as the availability of accessible narratives and visuals, influenced which parts attracted coverage. Its finding about less attention to Working Group III is a reported direction, not a quantified difference here; it should not be turned into a percentage. Nor do these examples establish how prevalent any frame is across all science reporting.

Why two reports about research may feel different

A scientific finding can be placed in several kinds of context. One account may explain the methods and limits; another may lead with a possible everyday risk. A story can define the problem in terms of health, economics, ethics, or security, then give more attention to certain causes or responses. Those choices shape the route through which a reader encounters the evidence.

Consider a study that is still uncertain or has conflicting findings. One story might make the uncertainty its lead, making the limits of knowledge central. Another might focus on a possible consequence for daily life. A third might describe a policy dispute. Each emphasis raises a different question for readers, but none alone tells them whether the study’s methods are sound or whether the wider evidence supports its result.

Likewise, disagreement needs a precise description. Researchers may disagree about the strength or interpretation of evidence; policymakers or members of the public may disagree about what action to take. Those disputes can overlap, but a political or ideological conflict is not automatically scientific disagreement. Reporting them as though they were interchangeable can blur what is contested.

Frames are not necessarily mutually exclusive. A story can discuss a possible risk, explain uncertainty, and describe a policy debate. The useful question is not simply “Which frame is this?” but “What does this emphasis help the reader see, and what relevant context might it leave in the background?”

Can framing change how audiences interpret research?

It can influence what seems important, how a problem is understood, which people or institutions appear responsible, and what responses seem relevant. A frame may affect perceived credibility or how a finding fits with a reader’s existing understanding. These are possible pathways, not guarantees that a particular story will persuade or polarize every reader.

The National Academies’ 2017 report, Communicating Science Effectively: A Research Agenda, describes mixed findings on framing effects, including in climate communication. It calls for more systematic research, including studies using national samples and exposing people to competing messages as they encounter them in realistic communication environments. The report does not support a universal rule that a given frame produces the same belief change across audiences and issues.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

It also matters what a study measures. A content analysis can identify how stories represent evidence; on its own, it cannot show that audiences changed their beliefs because of those stories. Stronger claims about causal effects require direct audience measures, such as experiments or other designs that assess how people respond. Even then, the result should be interpreted in light of the messages, people, and setting actually studied.

How to evaluate the framing of a science story

  1. Find the underlying study or report. Identify what researchers examined, what they measured, and what conclusion they drew. Do not treat a headline’s shorthand as a substitute for the original claim.
  2. Check the status and scope of the evidence. Look for whether a result is preliminary, replicated, contested, or consistent with a wider evidence base. A single study may be informative without establishing a settled conclusion.
  3. Compare the story’s emphasis with its evidence. Notice whether the headline describes a possibility as a certainty, or whether a dramatic result is presented without its limitations. Also avoid the opposite error: uncertainty does not mean a result is worthless.
  4. Look for missing context. Ask whether the account explains relevant comparison groups, limitations, alternative explanations, or the broader research question. Their absence does not prove the report is misleading, but it can make the result harder to interpret.
  5. Separate scientific and policy disputes. Identify whether disagreement concerns the evidence itself, the significance of a finding, or what society should do about it.
  6. Trace the communication path where possible. Scientific publications, institutional press materials, and news stories are distinct stages. The ocean-plastic preprint examines this relationship in one case; it does not show that press releases always determine how journalists frame science.
  7. Assess emphasis before inferring intent. Describe what the story selected or omitted and what effect is supported by evidence. A frame alone is not proof of deception.

What these studies cannot establish

The cases discussed here address different questions: television portrayals of molecular medicine, coverage of a particular IPCC assessment, online opioid news, and the path from press releases to newspaper articles about ocean plastics. Their samples and frame categories are not interchangeable, and together they are not a representative survey of all science reporting.

No broad, current prevalence figure for particular frames across science news is established by these sources. The IPCC study reports a relative difference in attention among working groups but no numerical magnitude suitable for quotation here. The molecular-medicine study’s 207 clips describe its own sample, not the volume or character of science coverage generally.

The ocean-plastic work was posted on EGUsphere as a preprint on 2025-05-28. It can illustrate questions about how framing appears in institutional and newspaper materials, but its publication status should not be confused with a settled peer-reviewed consensus. More generally, evidence about how stories are framed should not be mistaken for evidence that they have changed an audience’s beliefs.
