Express Mode can remove the need to unlock or authenticate before tapping. That Wallet bank-card payment is separate from the MBTA’s staged mobile Charlie Card rollout, whose general availability and fee were not established in the available MBTA instructions.
How do I use Apple Pay on the T?
Use Apple Wallet as a contactless, pay-as-you-go payment method. Add an eligible debit or credit card to Wallet, select that card for transit, and hold the top of your iPhone or the face of your Apple Watch near a Charlie reader. The reader processes the selected payment credential for the trip.

Express Mode is a convenience setting for that Wallet item, not a separate MBTA fare product. When it is enabled, you can tap without first unlocking the iPhone or authenticating with Face ID, Touch ID, or a passcode. The same basic process works with an Apple Watch.
Keep this arrangement distinct from a Charlie transit card stored in Wallet. The MBTA describes its Charlie system as a staged rollout. Its Wallet instructions refer to a mobile Charlie Card and say a fee for a new one will be announced, but the available material does not establish broad public availability, a launch date, or a final fee. Do not assume that every rider can currently add a mobile Charlie Card or transfer an existing plastic CharlieCard into Apple Wallet.
#1 Best Overall
- This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
- Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
- The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
What you need before tapping
- An iPhone or Apple Watch with Apple Wallet available and configured.
- A debit or credit card that your issuer allows you to add to Wallet.
- A Charlie reader at the MBTA service you are using.
- A consistent payment credential. MBTA Tap to Ride guidance recommends using the same card, phone, or watch each time so charges are assigned correctly.
Apple and MBTA labels can vary slightly by device and software version. If a menu is named “Express Transit Card” on one device and “Express Mode” on another, use the equivalent transit-card setting shown on your screen.
How to add a bank card to Apple Wallet
On an iPhone
- Open the Wallet app.
- Tap the plus button to add a card.
- Choose whether to add a new card or a card you have used previously.
- Follow the on-screen instructions to scan or enter the card details.
- Complete any identity verification requested by the card issuer.
Adding the bank card gives you a contactless payment credential for MBTA travel. It does not by itself create a stored-value Charlie Card, enroll you in a pass, or apply a reduced fare.
On an Apple Watch
- Open Wallet on the Apple Watch.
- Start the add-card flow.
- Follow the prompts and complete any issuer verification.
- Confirm that the intended card is available on the watch before traveling.
A card added to an iPhone and a card added to an Apple Watch are device-specific Wallet credentials. Check which device and which card you intend to use, then use that same credential consistently at the reader.
How do I set up Express Mode for the MBTA?
iPhone steps
- Open Wallet and select the card you want to use.
- Open the card’s more-options menu.
- Tap Card Details.
- Choose “Express Transit Settings” or “Express Mode,” depending on the wording shown.
- Select the card as the Express transit card.
Apple Watch steps
- On the paired iPhone, open the Watch app.
- Tap Wallet & Apple Pay.
- Under Transit Cards, choose “Express Transit Card.”
- Select the card you want the watch to use.
- Authenticate with the watch passcode when prompted.
Apple explains that Express Mode is available for eligible Wallet cards, passes, and keys. MBTA says it may be enabled automatically when an eligible item is added; check the setting rather than assuming the desired card is selected.
Turning Express Mode off
Return to the card details and switch Express Mode off. MBTA also describes a “None” choice that disables Express Mode for Wallet cards. After disabling it, expect to unlock or authenticate before tapping, subject to the normal behavior of your device and card.

What happens at a Charlie reader?
- Approach the reader with the iPhone or Apple Watch containing the selected card.
- With Express Mode enabled, hold the device near the reader without opening Wallet or authenticating first.
- Wait for the reader’s acceptance indication before moving away.
- Use the same phone, watch, or physical card for subsequent taps whenever possible.
The Wallet bank-card method is pay as you go. It is not evidence that the card has become an MBTA stored-value card, and Express Mode does not convert a bank card into a Charlie Card.

These options can look similar at the reader but represent different payment models and rollout states.

| Charlie Card in Wallet | Charlie transit-card model | MBTA Wallet instructions mention adding one, but the exact current enrollment path depends on rollout status | MBTA describes the Charlie system as staged; broad availability and the new-card fee are not established |
| Existing plastic CharlieCard | Traditional Charlie transit-card model | Continue using it under the applicable Charlie system rules | Do not assume it can be transferred into Apple Wallet without an explicit current MBTA instruction |
The MBTA’s Charlie landing information says contactless payments are the starting point and that additional features will be turned on as the system rolls out. That language is why a Wallet bank card should not be presented as proof that the full mobile Charlie Card program is already generally available.
Can I add my CharlieCard to Apple Wallet?
The safest answer is: not necessarily, and not by simply assuming that a plastic card can be imported. MBTA Wallet instructions mention a Charlie Card in Wallet and refer to a fee for a new mobile Charlie Card, but they do not establish a universal public launch, a final fee, or a guaranteed transfer process for every existing card.
If your MBTA account or Wallet interface specifically presents a Charlie Card option, follow that current enrollment flow. If it does not, use the documented contactless bank-card method or your existing physical CharlieCard. Avoid deleting or surrendering a working physical card while testing an unreleased or limited mobile option.

How to manage the payment credential and trip history
The newer Charlie site provides management for an unregistered Charlie Card and includes a selector for a Charlie Card in Apple Wallet or Google Wallet. These account tools are separate from simply tapping a bank card in Wallet.
For a numberless credit or debit credential, the account page says the transit identifier appears on the statement after “MBTA*” and begins with “55.” That identifier can help associate contactless activity with the correct account when the printed card number is not available.
The legacy MyCharlie account site currently manages standard CharlieCards and directs users managing contactless payments to the Charlie site. Choose the account system that matches the credential you actually used.
Can I use reduced fares with Apple Pay?
Potentially, but adding a card to Apple Wallet does not automatically apply a reduced fare. MBTA says reduced-fare benefits can be linked to a contactless credit or debit card, phone, or watch. You must verify your eligibility and link the intended contactless credential through the Charlie system.
Reduced-fare categories identified by MBTA include blind, disability, income-eligible, and senior programs. Some categories ride free without an application. The exact benefit depends on the program, so do not treat every Wallet card or every benefit category as interchangeable.

- The TAP reduced-fare information describes approximately 50% off one-way fares and passes for most modes, excluding The RIDE.
- The senior reduced-fare information describes approximately 50% off one-way fares and passes, including The RIDE.
Those descriptions concern the named MBTA programs, not a universal Apple Wallet discount. Confirm that your enrollment is active and that the phone, watch, or card you tap is the credential linked to your benefit.

The reader asks me to unlock the phone
Express Mode may be off, may be assigned to a different card, or may not be available for the selected Wallet item. Check the card’s Express Transit Settings or Express Mode menu and verify the selected card. If you intentionally disabled Express Mode, unlock and authenticate before tapping.
The wrong card is charged
Review the selected Express card and any cards installed on the other device you carry. A watch and iPhone can hold different Wallet credentials. Pick one payment method for your MBTA travel and keep using it.
The tap does not register
Hold the top of the iPhone or the face of the watch close to the reader for the reader’s acceptance signal. Check that the card was fully added and issuer verification completed. If the device still fails, use the physical card or another already-authorized payment method rather than repeatedly presenting different credentials.

I cannot find a mobile Charlie Card option
That may reflect the staged rollout rather than an error. The currently documented contactless bank-card path remains separate from the mobile Charlie Card feature. Use the option your MBTA account actually offers and check current MBTA instructions for rollout changes.

My reduced fare is not appearing
Confirm that your benefit program covers the trip, that enrollment is active, and that the exact card, phone, or watch being tapped is linked in the Charlie system. Adding the same bank card to Wallet under a different device does not by itself prove that the intended reduced-fare credential is linked.
Practical choices for different riders
Occasional rider
Add a debit or credit card to Wallet and use Express Mode if you want the quickest tap. This is the simplest documented setup because it does not require waiting for a mobile Charlie Card feature.
Frequent rider using one bank card
Use one consistent Wallet card or physical card and monitor the associated account activity. Consistency makes it easier to identify MBTA charges and avoid splitting travel across credentials.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Reduced-fare rider
Complete the MBTA benefit-linking process first, then tap only with the linked credential. Do not infer eligibility from the fact that a card works for ordinary contactless payment.
Rider who already owns a plastic CharlieCard
Keep using the physical card unless the MBTA gives you a current, explicit mobile migration path. The available instructions do not establish that every plastic CharlieCard can be imported into Apple Wallet.
Security and device-loss considerations
Express Mode trades an authentication step for faster boarding. Because the selected card can be presented without unlocking first, review which card is configured before travel and disable Express Mode if that convenience does not fit your risk tolerance. If an iPhone or Apple Watch is lost, use Apple’s device-management and Wallet controls to protect or suspend the cards, then use another MBTA payment credential.
The bottom line for MBTA riders
Today’s clearly documented path is a debit or credit card in Apple Wallet, tapped at a Charlie reader as a pay-as-you-go contactless payment. Express Mode can let you tap without unlocking or authenticating. A mobile Charlie Card is a separate Charlie-system feature still described as rolling out in stages; its general availability, timing, and fee should be confirmed from the latest MBTA instructions before you rely on it.
