Mars rovers avoid destroying their drills by combining rotation with controlled hammering, choosing targets carefully, and treating drilling as one stage of a larger sampling system. A rotary-percussive bit spins to maintain pressure while rapid impacts help it penetrate rock. The method lowers the load that continuous rotation alone would require, but it is not failure-proof: NASA has documented drilling reliability problems on Mars.
The two rovers most often associated with this work also have different goals. Perseverance cuts a cylindrical core and seals it in a sample tube for potential later retrieval. Curiosity grinds rock into powder and delivers that material to instruments inside the rover. Their drills therefore share a basic mechanism but not the same sampling workflow.

What “rotary-percussive” drilling means
A Mars rover does not simply press a spinning bit against a rock as if it were using a handheld drill. Its sampling tool combines two motions:
- Rotation: the bit turns while the system maintains contact pressure, allowing the cutting surface to work around the hole.
- Percussion: swift, hammerlike blows strike through the bit, helping propel it into the rock instead of requiring rotation to do all the work.
NASA describes this rotary-percussive arrangement as an arm-mounted tool. The drill is part of the rover’s robotic sampling hardware, so the rover can position it against a selected target and use the resulting material in a planned analysis sequence.

The combination matters because Martian rocks are not uniform. A bit may encounter layers with different hardness, fractures or textures. Alternating steady rotation with impacts gives the tool another way to advance when cutting resistance changes. The available mission descriptions do not publish a universal force, torque, vibration or rock-strength limit, so there is no defensible single threshold at which a drill is guaranteed to remain intact.
Drilling is only one part of the sampling system
The rover team does not treat a drill as an isolated replaceable hand tool. Before a hole is attempted, scientists and engineers examine the surface and the target rock. Perseverance can also make abrasion observations: it removes a small amount of surface material to reveal less-weathered rock and to improve the decision about whether a target is suitable for coring.
Perseverance carries interchangeable drill bits in a sampling turret. Having multiple bits lets the mission use the bit appropriate to the planned sampling operation and retain alternatives if a particular tool becomes unsuitable. The turret, bit and arm are coordinated as a single system rather than operated blindly against every rock that looks interesting.

How Perseverance takes a rock core
Perseverance uses a hollow rotary-percussive bit. As the bit advances, the rock cylinder enters the hollow center instead of being turned entirely into loose dust. The rover then places that core into a sample tube as part of its caching system.

| Perseverance item | What the mission documentation states |
|---|---|
| Bit type | Hollow bit used for coring |
| Nominal core diameter | About 0.5 inch (13 millimeters) |
| Nominal core length | About 2.4 inches (60 millimeters) |
| Material destination | A sample tube, for caching and possible later retrieval |
Those dimensions describe the nominal cylindrical core, not a promise that every target will produce a perfect cylinder. The rock’s behavior and the condition of the tool determine how complete a recovered core can be. The important design choice is that the bit is hollow and the sample is preserved as a discrete core rather than automatically delivered as powder to an onboard laboratory.
How Curiosity uses the same basic principle differently
Curiosity also uses rotary-percussive drilling, but its sample workflow is designed around immediate onboard analysis. Its drill pulverizes rock, and the resulting material is transferred to instruments inside the rover.
| Characteristic | Perseverance | Curiosity |
|---|---|---|
| Primary sample form | Cylindrical core | Powder |
| Bit and collection approach | Hollow coring bit in a sampling system | Drill produces material for delivery into the rover |
| Where material goes | Sample tube for caching and potential later retrieval | Internal instruments for analysis |
| Why the distinction matters | Preserving a solid specimen is central to the mission’s sample-return strategy | Preparing powder for the rover’s own instruments is central to its science workflow |
It is therefore misleading to describe the two vehicles as using identical drills. They share rotary-percussive mechanics, but the bit geometry, handling steps and destination of the material serve different mission purposes.
What the rover team does before drilling
1. Examine the target
Images and other observations are used to assess the surface and the rock selected for sampling. The team is looking for a target that is scientifically useful and mechanically reasonable, not merely one that is visible from the rover.

2. Abrade when that information is needed
Perseverance can abrade a patch of surface to expose less-weathered material. That observation can reveal whether the underlying rock is worth coring and can reduce uncertainty caused by coatings or weathered outer layers.
3. Select the sampling hardware
The sampling turret provides interchangeable bits. The team chooses the hardware and sequence that fit the planned operation, rather than assuming one bit must perform every task.
4. Position the arm-mounted tool
The robotic arm places the drill against the selected location. Because the drill is integrated with the arm and sampling system, positioning, drilling and sample handling are planned together.

- Contact is established. The arm brings the bit to the target and the system applies the contact needed for drilling.
- Rotation starts the cutting action. Rotary motion keeps the bit working against the rock and maintains the pressure needed to sustain the hole.
- Percussive impacts assist penetration. Hammerlike blows supplement the rotation and help drive the bit forward.
- The material follows the mission’s sampling path. For Perseverance, a core enters the hollow bit and is placed in a tube. For Curiosity, the drilled rock becomes powder that is delivered to internal instruments.
- The team evaluates the outcome. A target may produce the expected material, a partial result or evidence that the rock and tool behaved differently than anticipated.
The public mission descriptions do not establish a particular automatic shutoff threshold or a named sensor value that guarantees protection. It is more accurate to say that the rover uses a deliberately engineered operating method and human-directed target selection than to claim that software can prevent every damaging load.

Why the drills can still be damaged
Rotary-percussive drilling reduces the demands placed on continuous cutting, but rock remains unpredictable. A hard inclusion, unexpected fracture or other change in the material can alter how the bit loads the system. The drill is also exposed to wear over repeated operations, and a fault in one part of the sampling chain can limit the mission even if the bit itself is not visibly broken.
Curiosity provides a concrete warning against the phrase “without breaking” being interpreted as “cannot fail.” NASA has reported reliability issues with Curiosity’s drilling system and described a modified drilling method. In an early test of that approach, the rover made a hole about half an inch, or approximately 1 centimeter, deep. The test validated the mechanics of the modified method, but it did not collect a full science sample.
That result illustrates how mission teams manage risk: they can run a limited mechanical test before committing to a complete sample acquisition. It also shows why a shallow successful hole is not equivalent to a successful science drill. The goal may initially be to demonstrate that the mechanism works under Martian conditions.

A drill can be mechanically sound and still be a poor choice for a particular target. The rover team must balance scientific value against the chance that the rock will not yield a usable sample or will impose an unexpected load. Abrasion observations on Perseverance are useful precisely because the visible exterior may not represent the material the core would contain.

Interchangeable bits add another layer of resilience. They do not make the hardware indestructible, but they allow the sampling system to work with more than one bit and to plan around the capabilities of the available tools. The turret also supports the broader idea that drilling is a sequence of tool changes and sample-handling operations, not a single motor command.
Common misconceptions about Mars rover drilling
“The drill just spins faster when the rock is hard.”
The defining feature is not speed alone. Rotary-percussive drilling combines turning with impacts, so percussion contributes to forward progress while rotation maintains the hole and cutting action.
“Perseverance and Curiosity collect the same kind of sample.”
Perseverance’s system is built around a hollow bit and a cylindrical core placed in a tube. Curiosity’s workflow produces powder for instruments inside the rover. Their shared drilling principle does not make their sample products interchangeable.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems“A successful drill design eliminates breakage risk.”
No. NASA’s Curiosity drilling reports show that reliability problems can occur and that a modified method may first be tested with a shallow hole. Risk is reduced through target assessment, tool selection and staged testing; it is not eliminated.
“The rover must know the exact strength of every rock before drilling.”
The documented process relies on observations and engineering judgment, including abrasion results for Perseverance. The cited mission material does not provide a universal rock-strength measurement or a fixed threshold used for every target.
What “not breaking the drill” really means
In practical terms, the phrase describes a chain of risk controls. The bit uses two complementary motions, the robotic arm positions it deliberately, the team studies the target, and the sampling hardware is matched to the mission’s purpose. Perseverance’s interchangeable bits and abrasion observations provide additional options before a full core is attempted. Curiosity’s modified-drilling test shows that engineers can validate a new method in a limited operation before seeking a complete sample.
Those controls improve the odds of obtaining useful material while preserving the rover’s ability to continue operating. They do not guarantee that every hole will be complete, every core will be recovered or every component will remain reliable indefinitely. Mars rover drilling is best understood as controlled, evidence-based sampling under uncertainty—not as a conventional drill made immune to difficult rock.
