March of Giants is an upcoming free-to-play 4v4 tactical MOBA built around a different kind of player role: each player controls a Giant who commands battalions of Soldiers, while teams deploy structures and units called Battleworks to shape the battlefield. That announced combination—not a proven edge in balance, match length, depth, or accessibility—is what currently distinguishes it from established games such as League of Legends and Dota 2.
How March of Giants differs at a glance
| Comparison point | March of Giants | Established team-based MOBAs |
|---|---|---|
| Announced format | 4v4 tactical MOBA with lane-based combat, according to Ubisoft’s game coverage. | Ubisoft identifies League of Legends and Dota 2 as dominant genre examples, but the official sources cited here do not supply a comparable format breakdown for either game. |
| Player role | Players control Giants described as battlefield commanders or hero-like characters. | The cited official sources do not establish a like-for-like account of individual hero roles in these other games. |
| Control of other units | Players command battalions of Soldiers that can scout, gather resources, capture targets, attack fortifications, and engage opposing Giants. | No directly comparable unit-command feature is documented for League of Legends or Dota 2 in the cited sources. |
| Battlefield changes | Teams can deploy Battleworks, including trenches, tanks, turrets, and bunkers, to affect combat and reshape the battlefield. | The official sources cited here do not offer a parallel feature comparison for the other games. |
| Setting | A First World War-inspired battlefield blends industrial-era technology with fantasy Giants. | No setting comparison is established by the cited sources. |
This is a comparison of announced concepts, not a scored head-to-head review. Ubisoft says it wants to offer a different experience rather than copy the existing position of established MOBAs; that describes the design aim, not proof that the game is better or more original in play.

What you do in a March of Giants match
Control a Giant and command Soldiers
The central design distinction is that the player’s Giant is not the only actor on the battlefield. Ubisoft describes Soldiers organized into battalions, with roles that include scouting, gathering resources, capturing targets, attacking fortifications, and fighting opposing Giants. The developer’s design account also frames battalions as a way to build pressure and take objectives.

Use Battleworks to affect the map
Battleworks add deployable structures and units to the lane-based format. Ubisoft’s descriptions name trenches and bunkers, and its acquisition announcement also lists tanks and turrets. These are presented as tools that can influence combat and alter the battlefield, creating a map-shaping layer alongside Giant and Soldier actions.

- ARE YOU COMPETITIVE?...Sabotage is a team sport. Choose your partner wisely because only the duo with the right strategy, a bit of luck, and the ability to work with their partner will claim victory
- IT'S A RACE!: a 4 player game played in teams of 2. Players use cards to race their colored pawns around the board and into their finishing zone. The first duo to get all their team's pawns in the finishing zones first wins. But BEWARE, your opponent can block you, swap you, and even knock your pawns back home along the way. So get ready for twists and turns and never count yourselves out!
- TEAM STRATEGY: You and your partner must swap a card at the beginning of each round and this decision becomes increasingly strategic as the game progresses. Especially since you can’t discuss this decision! Do you give a card that betters your teammate’s position in the game? Or perhaps you give a card to help them sabotage your opponent! The choice is yours and yours alone
- FAST AND EASY TO LEARN: In under 7 minutes you can learn the rules of Partners and get in the action. Games usually last between 30-45 minutes. This family and adult board game is easy to learn, but difficult to master and endless fun! Each game comes with 4 sets of player pawns, playing board, game rules, and one pack of PARTNERS playing cards
Expect a different tone, not a different genre label
The setting pairs a First World War-inspired battlefield and industrial technology with fantasy Giants born from dreams and nightmares. Ubisoft has described the intended appeal as including gunpowder fantasy and steampunk. Despite that distinctive presentation, the company still describes the game as a tactical MOBA with lanes.
What cannot yet be fairly compared
Official descriptions establish the intended systems, but do not demonstrate how they perform in finished matches. The available official descriptions do not substantiate claims that March of Giants is faster, easier to learn, deeper, better balanced, more accessible, or more competitive than League of Legends or Dota 2. They also do not establish comparative match length, population, or long-term success.

- COOPERATIVE STRATEGY: Work as a team against the game itself in Pandemic. Players combine their roles and actions to contain four global outbreaks, share knowledge, and race to complete all four cures before time runs out.
- SPECIALIST ROLES: Play as the Medic, Scientist, Researcher, Operations Expert, and more. Each role has distinct abilities that shape team strategy and make every player's decisions important from start to finish.
- TEAMWORK GAMEPLAY: Pandemic rewards planning, card management, and coordinated moves. This cooperative strategy game creates tense decisions each round as players balance immediate threats with long-term progress.
- SERIES ENTRY POINT: Pandemic is the base game that introduces the wider series, including Pandemic Legacy Season 1. Learn the core systems here, then build on that experience in future campaign play.
- GROUP GAME NIGHT: For 2-4 players ages 8 and up, Pandemic plays in about 45-60 minutes. It fits family game nights at home, family vacations, adult board game groups, and players looking for a teamwork-focused tabletop challenge.
Those judgments require evidence from actual play and a sufficiently mature version of the game. Treat Ubisoft’s language about innovation as an ambition; the concrete basis for comparing the games today is their announced design, not a confirmed competitive advantage.

Ubisoft acquired March of Giants from Amazon in December 2025, with the Montreal team joining Ubisoft to continue development. Amazon Games Montreal had been the project’s former developer, according to Ubisoft’s acquisition announcement.
