Choose how many hours of unique programming you want before the playlist repeats, divide that runtime by the average length of your videos, and round up. For example, a six-hour cycle made from videos averaging eight minutes needs 45 videos. That is a planning calculation, not a YouTube recommendation.
Calculate the count from your target repeat interval
Start with the length of time you want viewers to hear or see unique material before it repeats. Convert that target to minutes, divide by the average video duration in minutes, then round up to a whole video:

- Convert it to minutes: six hours × 60 = 360 minutes.
- Divide by the average video length. At eight minutes per video, 360 ÷ 8 = 45 videos.
- Round up if the calculation is not a whole number, so the playlist meets or exceeds the target runtime.
A full 24-hour cycle at the same eight-minute average takes 1,440 ÷ 8 = 180 videos. Both counts are arithmetic illustrations based on those assumptions, not platform benchmarks or promises about audience preference.

Use actual runtimes for mixed-length videos
If the videos vary substantially in length, add the selected videos’ runtimes to find the playlist’s real cycle length. An average is useful for estimating a count, but the sum of the actual durations tells you how long that particular playlist runs before repeating.
Decide what counts as a repeat
Whether a near-duplicate feels repetitive is an editorial judgment about your material and audience. YouTube’s reviewed guidance does not set a minimum variety requirement or a preferred repeat interval. Choose a cycle that fits the content rather than treating any particular count as a rule.

Choose between a repeating playlist and a live broadcast
A playlist repeating continuously and a 24/7 live broadcast are different ways to keep prerecorded material playing. YouTube documents a playlist repeat control, and separately describes encoder-based setup as one way to create a live stream. The count of videos does not determine which operating approach is right.

Use a live broadcast when the live-stream experience or its controls matter to your channel. If the main goal is continuous playback, consider whether a repeating playlist meets it without operating a broadcast. Turn on playlist repeat
YouTube Help documents repeat controls on computer, mobile, TV, and gaming console. On a computer, open the playlist and select the repeat icon in the playlist box to keep it playing continuously. See YouTube’s device-specific instructions for repeating a video or playlist for the relevant device steps.
Plan around long-broadcast archive and DVR limits
Do not assume that a single uninterrupted 24-hour broadcast will produce a complete replay or allow viewers to rewind through the full stream. YouTube says a stream under 12 hours can be automatically archived, while a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. YouTube also warns that DVR rewind may be limited or unavailable on streams longer than 12 hours. These are broadcast caveats, not limits on how many videos a playlist can contain.

If a replay or rewind matters, make a separate recording and verify the result rather than relying on the live archive alone. YouTube’s operational checklist also recommends monitoring stream audio and video, checking local archive files, confirming the event is accessible on channel and watch pages and mobile devices, and leaving bandwidth headroom. Consult YouTube’s live-streaming troubleshooting checklist and its live-stream archive and DVR guidance before planning around a long broadcast.
