1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFor a portfolio made of individual stocks, about 12 carefully selected companies is a reasonable minimum starting point. Holding roughly 20 to 40 can reduce company-specific risk more substantially, while a broad mutual fund or ETF can provide far wider exposure without requiring you to analyze and monitor dozens of names. These are decision ranges, not guarantees: the right number also depends on how correlated the holdings are, whether one sector or country dominates, how large each position is, and how consistently you can review the portfolio.
The short answer: use a range, not a magic number
Four or five stocks are not enough to call an individual-stock portfolio diversified. Investor guidance from the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) says you need “at least a dozen carefully selected individual stocks to be truly diversified.” That guidance is a floor, not a promise that twelve companies will eliminate losses.

- About 12 stocks: a minimum starting point for a deliberately selected individual-stock sleeve.
- About 20–40 stocks: a stronger range for reducing company-specific risk when the holdings span industries and regions.
- A broad mutual fund or ETF: the simpler option when you want hundreds or thousands of underlying companies, or cannot analyze and rebalance 20–40 positions yourself.
The count matters because a single company can suffer a product failure, accounting problem, lawsuit, regulatory action or permanent competitive setback. Owning more independent businesses limits the damage from any one event. It does not remove market-wide risk: a broad equity-market decline can affect nearly every stock at the same time.

Why counting tickers can mislead you
Company-specific risk falls as holdings are added
Adding a second, third and subsequent stock generally removes more idiosyncratic, or company-specific, risk than adding the same number of stocks later. The benefit tapers off because the remaining risk is increasingly shared by the market. This is why moving from five to 12 holdings can be more consequential than moving from 52 to 59.

Diversification cannot guarantee a profit. It addresses the risk that one company disappoints; it cannot protect you from inflation, interest-rate shocks, recessions, war, a broad valuation decline or another event that moves many assets together. Those are forms of systematic market risk.
Correlation matters more than the ticker count
Two stocks that respond to the same economic forces are not independent bets. Twenty companies concentrated in one industry can be less diversified than 10 companies spread across sectors with lower correlations. For example, a portfolio of manufacturers, suppliers and retailers tied to one commodity may fall together even though it contains many separate corporate names.
Review exposure to sectors, countries, currencies and investment factors such as company size, value or growth. Also check whether several holdings depend on the same customer, supplier, technology platform or regulatory regime. The objective is not to maximize the number of symbols; it is to own return drivers that are not all the same.
Position size can overwhelm diversification
A portfolio with 30 names is still highly concentrated if one stock represents a very large share of its value. Conversely, a smaller holding list can spread risk more evenly when position sizes are controlled. Decide a maximum starting weight and a threshold at which a rising position must be trimmed. Your rule should account for price gains, new contributions and corporate actions, not just new purchases.

What published estimates actually say
Different studies answer different questions. Some model randomly selected stocks, some assume equal weighting, and some distinguish between investors who borrow and investors who lend. Their figures should therefore be read as evidence about risk reduction under stated assumptions, not as universal portfolio instructions.
| Source and date | Finding | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, 2009 investor guidance | At least a dozen carefully selected individual stocks for true diversification | A practical minimum for an individual-stock portfolio, with selection and spread still essential |
| Gordon Y. N. Tang, 2004 model | 20 equal-weighted stocks eliminated about 95% of diversifiable risk on average in the model | A model result showing the large early payoff from adding holdings; it does not remove market risk or guarantee the same result in every market |
| Meir Statman, Journal of Financial and Quantitative Analysis study (1987; article page published online 2009) | At least 30 stocks for a borrowing investor and 40 for a lending investor | An academic estimate whose assumptions and investor type matter |
| Rajan Raju and Sobhesh Kumar Agarwalla, Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad, 2021 | 40–50 stocks to target a 90% reduction in diversifiable risk with 90% confidence in an India-based framework | Higher confidence and a specified risk-reduction target can require a larger portfolio; the result is not a universal requirement for every country |
| Vanguard Research, 2026 | About 75% of U.S. equities underperformed the index since 1990; 10 stocks generated more than 30% of U.S. equity wealth created from 1990–2025 | Broad exposure helps you own rare winners that are difficult to identify in advance |
The studies also explain why older rules of thumb that cited eight or 10 stocks can be inadequate. A 2021 literature review found no universal optimum and noted that newer studies often require larger portfolios than earlier estimates. The appropriate target changes with the confidence level, risk reduction sought, market, weighting method and investor constraints.
A practical way to choose your own target
1. Define what the stock sleeve must do
Separate the portion intended for individual-stock decisions from the rest of your assets. A stock-picking sleeve may be designed for long-term growth, income or learning, while other assets provide diversification or liquidity. Knowing the sleeve’s purpose prevents you from treating a handful of speculative ideas as your entire financial plan.
2. Set a position-size ceiling before buying
Choose the largest percentage you are willing to lose if one company goes to zero or suffers a permanent impairment. Translate that ceiling into a minimum number of positions. If you cannot tolerate a large single-company loss, a 12-stock portfolio may still be too concentrated even though it meets the SEC’s minimum.

3. Map sector and geographic exposure
List every holding by its primary business, revenue geography and major risk factor. Look through subsidiaries and conglomerates rather than relying only on the exchange ticker or company label. Add holdings that diversify the drivers of return, not merely companies with different names.
4. Examine correlation and hidden overlap
Ask whether several holdings would react similarly to an oil-price shock, a stronger dollar, a change in regulation or a slowdown in one customer industry. Correlation is not fixed, especially during market stress, so avoid assuming that historically different stocks will always move independently.
5. Match the count to your monitoring capacity
Every individual holding creates work: reading results, following balance-sheet changes, checking the original investment thesis and deciding whether a price move reflects new information. If you cannot perform that work for 20–40 positions, owning that many names can create neglected risk rather than diversification. A broad fund may deliver more reliable breadth with less maintenance.

Is 10 stocks enough?
Ten stocks are better than one or two, but they are below the SEC’s stated minimum for being truly diversified. Ten can also produce very different outcomes depending on the mix. Ten unrelated businesses with balanced weights may spread company-specific risk more effectively than 20 firms in one narrow industry. Ten highly correlated holdings, or a portfolio dominated by one position, can behave like a single economic bet.
Use 10 as a prompt to inspect concentration, not as a pass/fail label. If the portfolio is your complete equity exposure and you cannot accept a large loss from one company, add breadth or use a fund. If it is a small satellite allocation alongside a broadly diversified core, the consequences of a 10-stock sleeve may be limited, but the sleeve itself is still concentrated.

A fund is not automatically diversified: a narrowly focused sector fund, country fund or thematic product can hold many names that move together. Assess the actual holdings and exposures. The comparison below describes the usual trade-off between a carefully built individual-stock portfolio and a broad, market-oriented mutual fund or ETF.

| Consideration | Individual-stock portfolio | Broad mutual fund or ETF |
|---|---|---|
| Breadth | Usually around 12–40 names in the practical ranges discussed above | Can provide exposure to a much larger set of companies through one vehicle |
| Control | You choose companies, weights, sectors and exclusions | The fund’s mandate and index or manager determine holdings |
| Research burden | Requires company analysis, monitoring and decisions about each position | Within-fund diversification is maintained for you; you still need to review the fund’s mandate and exposures |
| Concentration risk | Can be managed directly, but mistakes or oversized positions are your responsibility | Broad funds reduce single-company exposure, while narrow funds can remain concentrated by sector, country or factor |
| Trading, taxes and costs | You control turnover but may incur many separate trades and taxable gains | One purchase can deliver broad exposure; fund expenses, spreads and distributions still matter |
| Tracking error | Your results can differ substantially from the market index | A market-oriented fund generally aims for broader market exposure, although performance differs from its benchmark |
The SEC specifically notes that mutual funds can make diversification within an asset class easier. That convenience is valuable when the alternative is owning too few stocks or failing to maintain a larger list. A fund also helps with the Vanguard finding that a small group of exceptional winners created a large share of long-run U.S. equity wealth: broad ownership reduces the chance that you simply miss those winners.

Portfolio designs that fit different constraints
Minimum individual-stock approach
Start around 12 only if you can select companies across multiple sectors and regions, keep position sizes controlled and follow each thesis. This is the smallest range discussed here, so concentration checks are especially important.
Balanced individual-stock approach
A 20–40-stock range offers more room to diversify business models, geographies and economic drivers. It also demands a repeatable analysis and review process. Do not add names solely to reach a number; an unfamiliar or poorly understood company can increase risk even when it raises the count.
High-confidence risk-reduction target
If your objective resembles the India-based framework’s goal—90% reduction in diversifiable risk with 90% confidence—the cited estimate was 40–50 stocks. That figure is tied to its country, framework and confidence target. It should not be presented as a universal rule for a U.S. investor or any other market.

Use a broad mutual fund or ETF when you want extensive exposure without maintaining dozens of company files. You can still reserve a smaller, clearly bounded stock-picking sleeve if you understand that it will carry more company-specific and tracking risk.
Common diversification mistakes
- Stopping at four or five holdings: this leaves a single setback with too much influence. Add breadth or use a broad fund.
- Counting companies without checking industries: classify holdings by sector, geography and shared economic drivers.
- Ignoring position drift: a successful stock can become the dominant risk. Apply a written weight limit and review threshold.
- Assuming a fund is automatically broad: inspect its mandate, sector allocation, geography and largest positions.
- Owning more than you can monitor: neglected holdings can remain exposed after the original thesis changes. Reduce the list or move the core to a diversified fund.
- Confusing diversification with safety: spreading stocks cannot eliminate market-wide losses, and it does not replace an emergency reserve or an asset allocation appropriate to your time horizon.
- Chasing a precise academic number: estimates such as 20, 30, 40 or 50 depend on assumptions. Use them to set a range and test your exposures, not to claim certainty.
Bottom line
For individual stock selection, treat 12 carefully chosen holdings as a minimum starting point and 20–40 as a stronger practical range when you can diversify across sectors, geographies and return drivers. A 40–50-stock target belongs to a specific high-confidence risk-reduction framework, not to every investor. If you cannot analyze, monitor and rebalance that many positions, a genuinely broad mutual fund or ETF is usually the more dependable route to diversification. Whatever vehicle you choose, count exposures—not just tickers—and remember that diversification reduces company-specific risk while leaving market risk.
