How Many Steps or Minutes of Walking Do You Need for Health Benefits?

For most adults, aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity activity each week; brisk walking can count. That could mean 30 minutes on five days or roughly 22 minutes a day. You do not need to reach 10,000 steps to benefit, and if you are currently inactive, adding a little walking is a useful start.

How many minutes should you walk each day?

The U.S. adult guideline is at least 150 minutes a week of moderate-intensity aerobic activity, or an equivalent combination of moderate and vigorous activity. Walking can contribute when its pace is brisk enough to raise your heart rate. The weekly total can be split across days in a way that suits your schedule; 30 minutes on five days is one example, not a required pattern.

Use effort rather than a universal speed to judge intensity. The CDC’s general cue is: “In general, at moderate intensity, you can talk, but you can’t sing.” If you can sing comfortably, pick up the pace; if talking is difficult, you may be working more vigorously.

How many steps a day do you need?

There is no universally established daily step minimum for health benefits. The U.S. and WHO activity recommendations are framed around time and intensity, not a single step target. Steps can help you track movement, but an all-day total includes light-intensity activity and does not show how much of your walking was moderate intensity.

A 2020 systematic review by Hall and colleagues examined 17 prospective studies involving more than 30,000 adults. In a subsample of those studies, each additional 1,000 daily steps at baseline was associated with estimated reductions of 6–36% in all-cause mortality risk and 5–21% in cardiovascular disease risk at follow-up. These are broad associations across observational studies, not guaranteed effects or a prediction for any one person. The reviewers found no specific minimum daily step count for overall benefit.

Is 10,000 steps a day necessary?

No. Ten thousand steps is not a required threshold for health benefits. A CDC page published in 2025 summarizes one study in which the risk of premature death leveled off at about 8,000–10,000 steps a day for adults younger than 60 and 6,000–8,000 for adults aged 60 or older. Those are study-associated ranges, not official targets, minimums, or individualized prescriptions. Results can vary, and the finding does not establish that everyone needs to reach those totals.

How can you use a step counter to track walking?

If you prefer steps to minutes, use a phone, an existing wearable, or a pedometer to establish your own pace. The federal guidelines describe using a step counter to see how many steps you typically take during a chosen period of moderate-intensity activity, then using that personal count as a tracking aid. There is no reliable universal conversion from 150 minutes to a fixed number of steps: cadence differs between people, and ordinary daily steps may be light activity.

  • Track a few walks at a pace that feels moderately intense and note the steps taken during those minutes.
  • Use your own observed step count to monitor similar walks over time, while keeping the weekly minutes-and-intensity goal in view.
  • Do not treat total daily steps as a direct substitute for knowing how much time you spent at moderate intensity.

How should you start if you walk very little?

Start from your current activity level. Add a few minutes of walking and build up gradually rather than trying to reach the full weekly target immediately. As it becomes comfortable, increase the time or pace until some walks meet the moderate-intensity talk test. Even below 150 minutes, some moderate-to-vigorous activity provides health benefits; the CDC notes that adults who sit less and do any amount of such activity gain some benefits.

Walking is one part of a broader activity routine. U.S. adult recommendations also call for muscle-strengthening activity on at least two days each week. Older adults should include balance activity as appropriate, alongside aerobic and strengthening activity. If you have a chronic condition or disability, ask a healthcare professional or physical-activity specialist what types and amounts of activity suit your circumstances.
