Divide the annual income you need by the net amount one paying fan contributes each year: required paying fans = desired annual creator income ÷ net annual income per paying fan. Kevin Kelly’s often-cited “1,000 true fans” model works only under its stated assumptions—about $100 in annual profit from each fan, paid directly to the creator—producing $100,000 in the example. Your own target may be far higher or lower once fees, costs, taxes, churn and location are included.
The calculation that answers the question
Start with the income you actually need, not a follower milestone. Then estimate what remains from one paying fan over a full year after platform fees, payment processing, refunds, production, fulfillment, customer support and other business costs.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
Required paying fans = annual income target ÷ net annual contribution per paying fan
For example, if your target is $60,000 per year and each paying fan contributes $120 in net profit over 12 months, the arithmetic is 60,000 ÷ 120 = 500 paying fans. The $60,000 target and $120 contribution are hypothetical inputs, not industry averages. Replace them with figures from your own budget and sales records.

Use profit, not the advertised price
A $10 monthly membership is $120 in annual gross sales, but it does not automatically produce $120 of creator income. A platform may retain a percentage, payment processing may take another amount, and delivering the promised benefits can require software, editing, materials, shipping, contractor time or refunds. Taxes can reduce the amount available for personal spending as well.
For planning, define net annual contribution as the money left for your creator income after recurring and variable business costs. Keep income taxes and self-employment taxes visible in a separate line so you do not mistake business profit for take-home pay.
What the “1,000 true fans” idea actually says
Kevin Kelly’s essay “1,000 True Fans” defines a true fan as someone willing to buy anything the creator produces. In the revisited version, Kelly writes that a creator can make a living with roughly a thousand such fans if each produces an average of $100 in profit per year and the creator is paid directly. The example therefore yields $100,000 annually.
“If you have roughly a thousand of true fans like this (also known as super fans), you can make a living — if you are content to make a living but not a fortune.”

— Kevin Kelly, “1,000 True Fans”
Kelly also says, “First, you have to create enough each year that you can earn, on average, $100 profit from each true fan.” That condition is the part most simplified summaries omit. The model is an illustration, not a current average creator salary, a living-wage standard, a guarantee that 1,000 followers will pay, or evidence that every creator can reach the same spending level.
Why the model can produce different counts
If your net contribution is $25 per fan per year, a $50,000 target requires 2,000 paying fans. If your net contribution is $500, the same target requires 100. The count changes when your offer, pricing, costs, sales frequency or audience relationship changes.
| Annual income target | Net annual contribution per paying fan | Required paying fans | What the arithmetic means |
|---|---|---|---|
| $40,000 | $50 | 800 | 40,000 ÷ 50 |
| $60,000 | $120 | 500 | 60,000 ÷ 120 |
| $100,000 | $100 | 1,000 | Kelly’s illustrative assumptions |
| $100,000 | $250 | 400 | 100,000 ÷ 250 |
| $100,000 | $500 | 200 | 100,000 ÷ 500 |
The figures in this table are arithmetic examples. Except for the 1,000-by-$100 illustration attributed to Kelly, they are not reported earnings data.

How to calculate your own number step by step
- Set an annual personal-income target. Add the amount you need for housing, food, insurance, debt payments, savings and other obligations. Decide whether the target is pre-tax business profit or money you can spend after taxes. Use the same definition throughout the calculation.
- List every creator revenue stream. Include memberships, subscriptions, digital products, courses, commissions, live events, licensing and physical goods only if paying fans actually buy them. One fan may purchase several offers in a year.
- Estimate annual gross spend per paying fan. Multiply recurring payments by the expected paid months and add realistic one-time purchases. Do not assume a subscriber remains for 12 months; use your observed retention or a conservative planning period.
- Subtract platform and payment deductions. Record the fee on each transaction and any currency-conversion or payout charge. Confirm whether taxes are added to the buyer’s bill or deducted from your proceeds.
- Subtract delivery and support costs. Include goods, shipping, software, contractors, editing, moderation, customer service, refunds and chargebacks. Allocate shared costs across the paying-fan base rather than ignoring them.
- Calculate net annual contribution. Gross annual spend minus transaction deductions and allocated costs equals the amount one fan contributes to your creator income before personal taxes.
- Divide the target by that contribution. Round up to a whole fan. If the result is 417.3, plan for at least 418 under the assumptions used.
- Add a resilience margin. Churn, failed payments, seasonality and unexpected expenses make a bare-minimum count fragile. Model a conservative case, such as 20% fewer active paying fans or a lower contribution, instead of treating the quotient as a promise.
A worked membership example
Suppose a creator charges $12 per month. A fan who stays for 10 months generates $120 in gross sales during the year. If platform and payment deductions total $18 and delivery, support and content costs allocated to that fan total $30, the net annual contribution is $72. A $60,000 target would then require 60,000 ÷ 72 = 833.34, so the creator would need at least 834 active paying fans under those assumptions. This example is intentionally hypothetical; substitute your actual retention and cost data.

Platform fees can change the result
Do not use a platform’s displayed tier price as your net figure. As one current example, Patreon’s official fee overview, updated September 11, 2026, says creator pages published after August 4, 2025 use a standard 10% platform fee, in addition to applicable taxes and payment processing fees. The same overview describes different treatment for eligible older pages.
That 10% figure applies to the terms Patreon describes for the specified pages; it is not a universal rate for every membership service or every account. Check your account’s plan, payment mix, currency and current terms before forecasting income. A change in platform policy, payment method or tax handling can alter net contribution without changing your headline price.
What to record in a fee worksheet
- Displayed price and discounts.
- Platform percentage or fixed fee.
- Payment-processing charge and currency conversion.
- Sales or value-added taxes charged to the buyer or withheld from proceeds.
- Refunds, failed payments and chargebacks.
- Payout or withdrawal charges.
Keep a separate line for personal income tax and any required social contributions. The applicable rate depends on your country, state or province, business structure and deductions; the available evidence does not establish one rate that applies to all creators.
Paying fans are not followers
A follower, subscriber or email contact has not necessarily paid you. “True fans” in Kelly’s definition are unusually committed buyers, not everyone who clicks Follow. No universal follower-to-paying conversion rate is established here, so do not divide your target by a guessed percentage and present the result as a fact.

Turn the paying-fan target into an audience requirement
Use your own funnel data. If 4% of qualified email subscribers become paying customers, and you need 500 active paying fans, you would need about 12,500 qualified subscribers at that conversion rate. If churn removes 8% of members each month, you must acquire replacements merely to keep the active count level. Measure conversion by source and offer rather than applying one rate to every platform.
- Reach: people who see your work.
- Owned audience: email subscribers or community members you can contact without an algorithmic feed.
- Qualified prospects: people who have shown interest in the specific problem or topic your offer serves.
- Paying fans: customers who completed a purchase or are currently paying.
- Retained paying fans: customers who remain active after renewals, refunds and failed payments.
Compare earning models by net contribution
Different offers can reach the same income target with very different workloads and risks. Compare what remains per paying fan, how often money arrives and how much delivery is required.
| Model | Income pattern | Main deductions and costs | Key risk to model | Relationship and ownership consideration |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Recurring membership | Monthly or annual payments | Platform and processing fees; ongoing content, moderation and support | Churn and failed renewals | Direct communication and an owned contact list improve resilience |
| Digital products | Usually one-time, with launches or evergreen sales | Platform fees, payment processing, updates, refunds and customer support | Uneven sales and piracy or discounting | Past buyers can be offered upgrades, but repeat purchase is not automatic |
| Services or commissions | Higher-value, irregular payments | Delivery time, revisions, contractors and project management | Capacity limits and income gaps between projects | Direct client relationships are strong, but the model scales less easily |
| Physical goods | One-time or repeat orders | Materials, manufacturing, inventory, shipping, returns and fulfillment | Margins, stock and logistics volatility | Customer data and repeat buying depend on the sales channel |
| Advertising or sponsorship | Often tied to reach or campaigns, not individual fan payments | Sales time, production and platform or agency deductions | Rate changes and concentration in a few partners | Audience access may remain mediated by another platform |
Headline prices are not comparable across these models. A $100 product sale may leave less profit than a $15 membership payment if fulfillment is expensive, while a high-priced commission may consume several hours of labor. Use net contribution and time required per fan or customer.

Recurring income is useful but not guaranteed
Subscriptions make forecasting easier because renewals create a base of expected revenue. They also expose you to churn: a member can cancel, fail a payment or downgrade. One-time products avoid automatic churn but require continuous launches, discovery or repeat purchases.

Track the numbers that determine stability
- Active paying fans: currently paid and entitled to benefits.
- Gross revenue per fan: total billed before deductions.
- Net contribution per fan: amount left after business costs.
- Monthly churn: share of members who cancel or fail renewal in a month.
- Average paid lifetime: expected months before a member leaves.
- Acquisition source: where each paying fan first discovered the offer.
- Refund and chargeback rate: revenue that does not remain yours.
Review these figures by offer and cohort. A large audience with low retention may support less income than a smaller audience that buys repeatedly and costs little to serve.
What can prevent 1,000 fans from supporting you?
The offer does not justify annual spending
Kelly’s framework assumes you create enough each year for each true fan to produce the assumed profit. A single low-priced offer may not reach that amount. A coherent range—such as a membership plus occasional premium releases—can raise annual contribution, but only if fans want those releases and delivery remains profitable.
Costs rise with audience size
Moderation, customer service, storage, shipping and contractor expenses can grow faster than membership revenue. Recalculate net contribution after major launches and when support volume changes.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Audience access is fragile
If all contact happens inside an algorithmic platform, a policy change or account interruption can reduce reach. Encourage permission-based contact, such as an email list, while respecting privacy and applicable law. Direct access does not guarantee sales, but it gives you a way to communicate without relying on one feed.
The income target is understated
Replacing a job may require more than the salary you currently see. Health coverage, retirement saving, paid leave, equipment, workspace and periods without sales may need to be funded by the creator business. Set the target for your location and household rather than adopting $100,000 from Kelly’s illustration.
A practical decision test before leaving employment
- Calculate net contribution using at least 12 months of real transactions where possible.
- Separate recurring revenue from one-time sales and identify the share dependent on launches.
- Stress-test the plan with lower retention, higher costs and a temporary drop in discovery.
- Confirm that you have cash reserves for taxes, refunds and slow months.
- Check that your paying-fan count is active and retained, not a historical total of everyone who ever purchased.
- Set a review date and a stop-loss rule instead of resigning solely because you reached a round follower number.
The result is a business forecast, not a guarantee. Keep the assumptions visible so you can update the fan target when pricing, costs, platform terms or your personal needs change.
Further context on Kelly’s framework
The revisited essay is also associated with Tim Ferriss’ Tools of Titans. It can provide background on the idea, but it is not required to calculate your own target. The key transferable lesson is the relationship between direct customer support, sufficient annual offerings and profit per fan—not the number 1,000 by itself.
