There is no definitive global count for 2026. The clearest available figures answer different questions: McKinsey’s 2025 global survey found that 88% of respondents said their organization regularly used AI in at least one business function, while the latest U.S. Census Bureau measure put AI use among U.S. businesses at 19.8% for the period ending May 3, 2026. These results are not directly comparable: one is a survey of people in organizations around the world, and the other is a representative survey of U.S. businesses.
What percentage of companies use AI?
The answer depends on which companies and what counts as “use.” The best-supported figures are:

- 88% in a global survey: McKinsey’s 2025 survey found that 88% of respondents said their organization regularly used AI in at least one business function. The survey included 1,993 participants at all organizational levels and was fielded June 25–July 29, 2025. Stanford HAI reports the result in its 2026 AI Index; McKinsey provides the survey context.
- 19.8% in the United States: In the U.S. Census Bureau’s Business Trends and Outlook Survey (BTOS), 19.8% of businesses reported current AI use in the period ending May 3, 2026. Across collection periods from December 14, 2025, through May 3, 2026, the reported rate ranged from 17% to 20%.
The U.S. estimate is not a global rate, and the 88% result is not a census of all companies. The figures differ in geography, who responded, sampling, question wording and reference period. They should not be averaged or presented as competing measurements of the same population.

What do the surveys count as AI use?
McKinsey: regular use in at least one business function
The 88% figure is a self-reported survey result. It indicates that respondents said their organization regularly used AI in one or more business functions; it does not establish that 88% of all companies worldwide had adopted AI, or that those organizations had deployed it broadly or at scale. Stanford HAI reports that the corresponding share was 78% in 2024. For generative AI specifically, regular use in at least one function was reported by 79% in 2025, up from 71% in 2024.

U.S. Census: business use in the previous two weeks
BTOS provides a nationally representative view of U.S. business implementation and asks whether a business used AI in the previous two weeks. Starting in November 2025, the Census Bureau changed the core question to cover AI in “any business function.” Before then, it asked about AI use “in producing goods or services.” The change matters when comparing periods: figures under the newer wording cover a broader range of business activity.
The Bureau’s May 2026 analysis reports the December 2025–May 3, 2026 trend and the 19.8% endpoint. That is the most direct answer to how many U.S. businesses reported recent AI use in the latest period covered by these data.

Are companies using AI broadly or only in a few areas?
A company counted as using AI may have applied it in only one part of the business. A Census Bureau working paper using its November 2025–January 2026 AI supplement found that 57% of AI-using firms used AI in three or fewer business functions. Among adopting firms, the most common functions were Sales and Marketing (52%), Strategy and Business Development (45%), and IT (41%). These are shares of adopting firms, not shares of all businesses.

Weighting by employment raised the estimate to 32%, because AI use was more prevalent among firms employing more people. A further 22% expected to adopt AI within six months; that is reported intention, not completed adoption. The study is published as the Census Bureau’s April 2026 paper, The Microstructure of AI Diffusion: Evidence from Firms, Business Functions, and Worker Tasks.
Which U.S. companies and industries report the most AI use?
In the BTOS period ending May 3, 2026, reported adoption varied by company size and industry:
| Group | Reported AI use | Measurement |
|---|---|---|
| Businesses with 250 or more employees | 37% | U.S. Census BTOS, period ending May 3, 2026 |
| Businesses with 100–249 employees | 32% | U.S. Census BTOS, period ending May 3, 2026 |
| Information | 39.7% | U.S. Census BTOS, period ending May 3, 2026 |
| Finance and Insurance | 33.9% | U.S. Census BTOS, period ending May 3, 2026 |
| Retail Trade | About 14% | U.S. Census BTOS, period ending May 3, 2026 |
The Census analysis also found fewer than 20% of businesses with four or fewer employees reported use, and those with fewer than 20 employees did not show a significant increase over the six-month period it reviewed. The overall adoption rate therefore conceals substantial differences between larger and smaller firms, as well as between industries.

No. The Census working paper treats company use in a business function and workers’ use of AI for work tasks as separate measures. For November 2025–January 2026, worker use in work-related tasks was reported at 23% of firms, or 41% when weighted by employment. The paper found that worker task use can occur without formal firm-level adoption, and formal adoption can occur without the measured worker task use. Among firms where workers used AI for tasks, 65% limited that use to three or fewer tasks.

What can these 2026 AI adoption statistics tell us?
- For a current U.S. business estimate: use the Census Bureau’s 19.8% figure for the period ending May 3, 2026, and retain its two-week use definition.
- For an international survey result: the strongest figure here is McKinsey’s 88% from 2025 fieldwork, reported by Stanford HAI—not a 2026 global census.
- For adoption depth: look beyond whether a firm reports any use. Census supplement data show that most AI-using firms used it in three or fewer business functions.
- For workforce exposure: separate worker task use from the company’s formal adoption status; they measure different kinds of diffusion.
The data establish that AI use is widespread among respondents to some global surveys and that roughly one in five U.S. businesses reported recent use in the latest Census period covered here. They do not establish a single, directly comparable percentage for all companies worldwide in 2026.
