There is no single calorie target that fits everyone. As a broad U.S. reference, the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) estimates 1,600–2,400 calories per day for adult women and 2,000–3,000 for adult men. Age and activity level move you within those ranges, while height, weight, health conditions and whether you want to lose, maintain or gain weight can change your individual requirement.
Those figures are population estimates, not prescriptions. NHLBI puts the starting point plainly: “To figure out your calorie needs, you need to consider your age and physical activity level.” Use a chart to orient yourself, then discuss a precise target with a healthcare professional when pregnancy, illness, medication or a specialized weight goal is involved.

Adult calorie ranges at a glance
The NHLBI’s DASH calorie-needs chart provides a broad reference for adults. It separates estimates by sex and activity, rather than assigning one universal number.

|---|---|---|
| Women | 1,600–2,400 calories | Age and physical activity |
| Men | 2,000–3,000 calories | Age and physical activity |
The ranges are intended for general orientation. They do not account precisely for every person’s body size, medical status, metabolism or objective. A person of the same age and sex may need substantially more or less than another person, even if both are described as “moderately active.”

Examples for adults ages 19–30
NHLBI gives more specific examples for this age band:
| Sex, age 19–30 | Sedentary | Moderately active | Active |
|---|---|---|---|
| Women | 1,800 | 2,000–2,200 | 2,400 |
| Men | 2,400–2,600 | 2,600–2,800 | 3,000 |
These are calories per day from the NHLBI chart. They are reference values, not a diagnosis or a guarantee that weight will remain stable for you.
Why your number differs from someone else’s
The 2020–2025 Dietary Guidelines for Americans identify several inputs that affect calorie needs:
- Age: needs generally change across the life span as body size, muscle mass and activity patterns change.
- Sex: federal tables use separate reference estimates for women and men.
- Height and weight: larger bodies usually require more energy than smaller bodies performing similar activity, but a chart cannot represent every body accurately.
- Physical activity: movement at work, during commuting, in exercise and in daily tasks all contribute.
- Weight goal: maintaining, losing or gaining weight requires different energy strategies.
- Health conditions and treatment: illness, recovery, medications and other clinical factors can alter needs.
The federal tables are calculated from reference heights and weights. The guidelines therefore describe their numbers as estimates; an individual’s requirements can differ. MedlinePlus also advises that medical conditions and weight goals matter and that a healthcare provider can help determine an appropriate intake.

What “sedentary,” “moderately active” and “active” mean
Activity labels are easy to misread. NHLBI defines them in practical terms rather than by exercise sessions alone:
| Category | NHLBI description | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Sedentary | Usual day-to-day living with little additional movement | Most routine activities are light; there is no regular amount of moderate walking or equivalent exercise. |
| Moderately active | Walking about 1.5–3 miles per day at 3–4 miles per hour, in addition to light daily activity | This can include a consistently active lifestyle, not merely an occasional workout. |
| Active | Walking more than 3 miles per day at 3–4 miles per hour, in addition to light daily activity | The total movement is higher than the moderate category and may come from work, transportation or training. |
If your activity varies substantially by day, classify yourself by your usual pattern over a week or longer rather than by your most active day. A person with a desk job who exercises briefly may not match the same estimate as someone who walks for work for several hours.
How to use a calorie chart without overtrusting it
- Choose the closest age and sex category. Start with the group that matches you in the NHLBI table or another official reference.
- Classify normal activity. Consider walking, standing, physical work, exercise and household tasks together. Use NHLBI’s walking definitions as a check.
- Recognize the chart’s assumptions. The federal estimates use reference heights and weights, so they are a starting range rather than your measured requirement.
- State your goal. Maintenance, weight loss and weight gain are different objectives. A maintenance estimate should not automatically be used as a weight-loss prescription.
- Observe trends, not single days. Intake and body weight naturally fluctuate. Look at patterns over time and adjust only with a sound reason.
- Get individualized advice when circumstances are complex. A clinician or registered dietitian can account for medical history, medication, pregnancy, lactation, eating-disorder risk and other factors that a general chart cannot.
There is no requirement to hit one exact number every day. The useful question is whether your usual intake supports your health and stated goal, not whether one meal or one day matches a round figure.
Calories for losing, maintaining or gaining weight
A calorie estimate describes energy needs; it does not by itself prescribe a safe rate of weight change. The Dietary Guidelines and MedlinePlus both identify the goal of losing, maintaining or gaining weight as a factor in determining an appropriate intake.

Maintaining weight
For maintenance, the relevant starting point is the amount that has historically kept your weight reasonably stable at your current activity level. A chart can suggest a range, but your real-world trend may fall above or below it because the chart uses reference bodies.
Losing weight
Weight loss plans should be individualized rather than built by subtracting an arbitrary amount from a chart. Medical conditions, medications, age, current weight, activity and eating history can affect both the target and the appropriate pace. If you have a history of disordered eating, are underweight, are an adolescent or have a chronic condition, seek professional guidance before restricting calories.
Gaining weight
Weight gain also depends on why it is needed and what foods can be tolerated. A clinician or dietitian can help distinguish a planned increase from unintended weight loss that needs medical evaluation.

Pregnancy and lactation need separate guidance
Pregnancy changes the calculation, and a general adult chart should not be converted into a personal pregnancy prescription. In the 2020–2025 Dietary Guidelines, estimated changes from prepregnancy calorie needs for people with healthy prepregnancy weight are:

| Third trimester | +452 calories per day | Edition-specific population estimate for healthy prepregnancy weight |
| Lactation | Not stated in this article | The same appendix provides lactation estimates, but personal needs depend on prepregnancy weight and other factors. |
The figures above come from the 2020–2025 edition and are not individualized instructions. Prepregnancy weight, rate of weight gain, activity, health status and whether you are exclusively or partially breastfeeding can all matter. Follow the plan from your obstetric or primary-care clinician, and ask a registered dietitian if you need help translating it into meals.
The official Dietary Guidelines website identifies a newer edition of the guidelines. Because the newer calorie tables are not reproduced here, do not describe the 2020–2025 pregnancy numbers as the current federal values without checking the latest edition directly.

MedlinePlus explains that calorie needs can be affected by health conditions and recommends discussing individual requirements with a healthcare provider. Examples include conditions that affect blood sugar, digestion, the heart, kidneys or thyroid; recovery from illness or surgery; pregnancy complications; and medications that change appetite, fluid balance or metabolism.

Using food labels to estimate what you actually eat
Daily calorie needs and food-label calories answer different questions. A needs estimate tells you roughly how much energy your body may require; a label describes the energy in a specified serving of a food.
MedlinePlus notes that serving sizes on labels are based on average amounts people typically eat. Your portion may be larger or smaller, so multiply the listed calories by the number of servings you consume. Check whether the label reports the whole package or only one serving.
A digital food scale is optional. It can help you weigh portions when serving sizes are difficult to judge, but it does not calculate your daily calorie requirement and is not necessary for healthy eating. Use it as a measurement aid, not as proof that a chart’s estimate is your exact target.

Common mistakes to avoid
- Treating 2,000 calories as a universal rule: that round number is not appropriate for every adult and does not replace an estimate based on age, activity and body size.
- Ignoring drinks, sauces and small bites: these can contribute energy even when they do not look like a full serving.
- Calling occasional exercise “active”: NHLBI’s active category refers to a consistently higher movement level, including more than three miles of walking per day at the stated pace in addition to light activity.
- Assuming a chart includes your medical situation: federal reference tables cannot account precisely for every condition, medication or recovery period.
- Using pregnancy increments as a personal prescription: the trimester figures are dated, population-level estimates for people with healthy prepregnancy weight.
- Changing intake sharply after one weigh-in: day-to-day weight reflects more than body fat, so decisions should be based on trends and, when needed, professional assessment.
A practical decision guide
A generally healthy adult seeking orientation
Use the NHLBI range, select the closest age and activity category, and treat the result as a starting estimate. Compare it with your normal intake and longer-term weight trend rather than forcing yourself to match the midpoint.
Someone pursuing weight loss or gain
Define the goal first, then obtain advice appropriate to your age, current weight, activity and health. The right plan may involve food quality, meal timing, strength training or medical treatment in addition to calories.
Someone who is pregnant, breastfeeding or managing a condition
Use your healthcare provider’s recommendation instead of converting a general chart into a personal target. Bring the chart as background information if useful, but let clinical factors determine the plan.
What to remember
For U.S. adults, NHLBI’s broad reference is 1,600–2,400 calories per day for women and 2,000–3,000 for men, with age and activity shifting the estimate. Height, weight, health conditions and your weight goal add further variation. Federal tables are based on reference bodies and are estimates, while pregnancy and lactation require stage- and person-specific advice. The safest way to turn a broad number into a personal target is to combine an official estimate with your health history, goals and guidance from a qualified professional.
