Guinness Draught is 4.2% ABV. Its official Irish specification lists 35 kcal per 100 ml, which works out to about 199 kcal in a 568 ml imperial pint. The United States product listing gives 125 calories for a 12 fl oz serving. Guinness 0.0 is labeled 0% ABV and 17 kcal per 100 ml. The exact answer depends on the Guinness variant, country label and serving size.
Guinness calories and alcohol at a glance
| Product or listing | Alcohol | Calories as published | Carbohydrate | Fat | Label basis |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Guinness Draught, Ireland | 4.2% ABV | 35 kcal per 100 ml | 3 g per 100 ml | 0 g per 100 ml | Irish product specification |
| Guinness Draught, United States | 4.2% ABV | 125 calories | 9.4 g | Not stated | 12 fl oz serving |
| Guinness Original/Extra Stout | 4.2% ABV | 35 kcal per 100 ml | 3 g per 100 ml | 0 g per 100 ml | Published product specification |
| Guinness 0.0 | 0% ABV | 17 kcal per 100 ml | 3.8 g per 100 ml | 0 g per 100 ml | Published product specification |
These figures are not interchangeable. Guinness states that calories vary by both beer and serving size, so a number printed for a 12 fl oz serving should not be presented as the calorie count for every pint or can.

How many calories are in a pint of Guinness Draught?
Imperial pint: about 199 calories
An imperial pint is 568 ml. Applying the Irish specification of 35 kcal per 100 ml gives:
Recommended Free Tools
35 × 568 ÷ 100 = 198.8 kcal
Rounded for everyday use, that is about 199 calories per imperial pint. The same calculation gives approximately 17 g of carbohydrate because the specification lists 3 g per 100 ml. Fat is listed as 0 g per 100 ml.

US pint: about 166 calories from the Irish per-volume figure
A US pint is 473 ml, not 568 ml. If you apply the Irish 35-kcal-per-100-ml figure to that volume:
35 × 473 ÷ 100 = 165.55 kcal
That rounds to about 166 calories, with roughly 14.2 g of carbohydrate using the 3 g-per-100-ml value. This is a calculation from the published per-volume specification, not a separate US pint value printed by Guinness.
US 12 fl oz serving: 125 calories
The US Guinness Draught listing states 125 calories for 12 US fluid ounces and 9.4 g of carbohydrate. Twelve fluid ounces is about 355 ml, so this serving is smaller than either a US or imperial pint. Do not multiply 125 by a simple pint ratio and assume the result is an official label value; regional nutrition panels can use different serving conventions and rounding.

A pint is not a single measurement
- An imperial pint contains 568 ml.
- A US pint contains 473 ml.
- A US 12 fl oz serving contains about 355 ml.
Two glasses both called a “pint” can therefore contain different amounts of beer. When tracking calories, record the actual volume and use the nutrition basis printed for that market whenever possible.

Variant names matter
“Guinness” is a family of beers rather than one nutritional formula. Draught, Original or Extra Stout, stronger export products, flavored releases and Guinness 0.0 have different alcohol levels and may have different nutrition panels. The product name on the can, bottle or menu is the first detail to check.
How much alcohol is in Guinness?
Alcohol is stated as ABV (alcohol by volume). For Guinness Draught, 4.2% ABV means that 4.2% of the drink’s volume is pure ethanol by volume. In a 568 ml imperial pint, that corresponds to approximately 23.9 ml of ethanol by volume; in a 473 ml US pint, it is approximately 19.9 ml. These are volume interpretations of ABV, not a conversion into a country-specific “unit” system.
The alcohol content varies substantially among Guinness products. The manufacturer’s FAQ lists the following ABVs:
| Guinness product | ABV | Alcoholic? |
|---|---|---|
| Special Export | 8% | Yes |
| Foreign Extra Stout | 7.5% | Yes |
| West Indies Porter | 6% | Yes |
| Baltimore Blonde | 5% | Yes |
| Smooth | 4.5% | Yes |
| Draught | 4.2% | Yes |
| Original/Extra Stout | 4.2% | Yes |
| Hop House 13 Lager | 4.1% | Yes |
| Nitro Cold Brew Coffee | 4% | Yes |
| Guinness 0.0 | 0% | No alcohol listed on the product specification |
Availability and labeling can differ by market, so use the ABV on the particular package or menu where it is sold. A beer’s dark color or creamy head does not indicate its alcohol strength.

Guinness 0.0: calories and alcohol
Guinness 0.0 is specified at 0% ABV and 17 kcal per 100 ml. That is less than half the 35 kcal per 100 ml listed for Guinness Draught and Original/Extra Stout. Its specification lists 3.8 g of carbohydrate and 0 g of fat per 100 ml.
Calculated serving values
| Serving volume | Guinness 0.0 calories | Guinness 0.0 carbohydrate |
|---|---|---|
| 568 ml imperial pint | About 97 kcal | About 21.6 g |
| 473 ml US pint | About 80 kcal | About 18.0 g |
| 100 ml | 17 kcal | 3.8 g |
The pint figures are arithmetic from the per-100-ml specification and are rounded. “0.0” is the product’s stated alcohol level; legal definitions for terms such as alcohol-free can vary by jurisdiction, so anyone who must avoid alcohol should check the package and local guidance.
Carbohydrates and fat in Guinness
The Irish Draught and Original/Extra Stout specifications list 3 g of carbohydrate and 0 g of fat per 100 ml. Guinness 0.0 lists 3.8 g of carbohydrate and 0 g of fat per 100 ml. Using those bases, an imperial pint of regular Draught contains about 17 g of carbohydrate, while an imperial pint of 0.0 contains about 21.6 g.
Those carbohydrate numbers are label values, not a measure of total calories by themselves. Alcohol also contributes energy, which is why comparing only carbohydrate grams can give an incomplete picture of a drink’s calorie content.

Is Guinness lower in calories than other beer?
There is no single answer without specifying the competing beer, serving volume and market. The published Guinness figures establish what is in each listed product, but they do not establish a universal ranking against every lager, ale or stout.
For a fair comparison, put the products on the same basis:
- Match the serving volume, such as 355 ml, 473 ml or 568 ml.
- Compare the same type of number: calories per serving or calories per 100 ml.
- Check ABV separately, because a lower calorie value does not mean a drink contains less alcohol unless the alcohol percentages are also compared.
- Use the label for the country where the drink was purchased; the US 12 fl oz listing and Irish per-100-ml listing demonstrate why regional panels cannot be mixed casually.
If a retailer, bar menu or calorie app gives a different figure, check whether it refers to a different Guinness variant, a can rather than a draft pour, or a different serving definition.

calories in your serving = calories per 100 ml × serving ml ÷ 100
For example, the Irish Draught figure can be applied to any measured pour. A 330 ml serving would be 35 × 330 ÷ 100, or about 116 calories. That result is a calculation, not a replacement for a package panel if the can carries a market-specific serving value.
For carbohydrate, use the same method with the carbohydrate figure. Keep the variant and volume beside the result in your food log; “Guinness” alone is not precise enough.

- Ask whether the pour is an imperial pint, US pint, half-pint or another glass size.
- Confirm the product name: Draught, Original/Extra Stout, a stronger specialty beer or 0.0.
- Read ABV from the menu, tap badge or package rather than assuming every Guinness is 4.2%.
- For calorie tracking, use the serving number for your country when it is printed; otherwise calculate from the per-100-ml value and your measured volume.
- Do not treat a 0.0 product as nutritionally identical to regular Draught: its calorie and carbohydrate figures are different.
- If you are avoiding alcohol for medical, religious, recovery or legal reasons, verify the exact product and local labeling requirements before drinking.
What to remember
For the commonly served Guinness Draught, the reliable headline is 4.2% ABV. The Irish specification is 35 kcal per 100 ml, equivalent to about 199 kcal in an imperial pint or about 166 kcal in a US pint when calculated by volume. The US listing instead gives 125 calories for 12 fl oz. Guinness 0.0 is a separate 0% ABV product at 17 kcal per 100 ml. Always attach the variant, market and serving size to the number you quote.
