That is enough for thousands of ordinary text ebooks, but Amazon does not rate it for 70,000 books. That number is an assumption-dependent calculation that works only with exceptionally small files. A much larger number—79,621 free ebooks—describes Project Gutenberg’s catalog, not the number that fit on one device.
What the 70,000-book claim actually means
Storage capacity and catalog size are different things. Amazon’s current device reference lists 16GB of internal storage and approximately 11.5GB available for user content. In a 7 December 2022 announcement, Amazon described 16GB as “enough to hold thousands of titles.” It did not promise 70,000.

To reach 70,000 on 11.5GB, every book would need to average roughly 170KB, with essentially no space used by images, enhanced formatting, comics, audiobooks or other documents. That is a mathematical scenario, not a device specification. Larger files reduce the count quickly, while image-heavy books and audiobooks can consume hundreds of times more space than a short, text-only ebook.
Why usable storage matters
- Advertised capacity: 16GB is the device’s nominal internal storage.
- Reader-accessible capacity: approximately 11.5GB on the current 16GB reference model.
- What shares that space: downloaded books, personal documents, images, comics, audiobooks and system data.
Cloud books that you have not downloaded do not consume the same local space. A Kindle can therefore give you access to a library far larger than its internal storage, but only the downloaded portion is available offline.

How many ordinary ebooks fit?
There is no single answer because file sizes vary. A plain, text-focused ebook may be small enough that thousands fit comfortably. Books with illustrations, large cover files, complex layouts or embedded fonts require more room. Audiobooks and comics should be treated as separate storage cases rather than folded into an ebook estimate.
| Content type | Effect on local capacity | Practical interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| Plain text or lightly formatted ebooks | Lowest storage demand | Thousands can fit on a 16GB model |
| Illustrated or image-heavy ebooks | Higher demand per title | Local count falls as image content increases |
| Comics and graphic books | Often substantially larger files | Do not use a text-ebook estimate |
| Audiobooks | Much higher demand than text | A small collection can use significant space |
For a personal estimate, check the file sizes of several books in the format you actually read, calculate an average, and divide the Kindle’s approximately 11.5GB of usable space by that average. Leave headroom for software updates and content you may add later. The result is an estimate, not a guaranteed maximum.

Can you put free books on a Kindle?
Yes. The safest route is to use legally offered files and deliver them through Amazon’s Send-to-Kindle service. Amazon says supported documents can be uploaded through the web, an authorized email address or Kindle apps, then added to your Kindle library at no additional cost.
- Obtain an ebook you are legally allowed to download, preferably in EPUB3 or another format supported by Send-to-Kindle.
- Open Amazon’s Send-to-Kindle channel: the web uploader, your authorized Send-to-Kindle email address or a Kindle app.
- Upload the file and send it to the Kindle account or device you selected.
- On the Kindle, connect to Wi-Fi and use the library sync or download control.
- Confirm that the book appears and opens correctly before deleting the original file or relying on it for offline reading.
Delivery convenience does not change copyright status. Only upload books that the source has made available for you to use, or material you have permission to distribute to your own device.

Where can you download free Kindle-compatible books legally?
Project Gutenberg
Project Gutenberg’s homepage reported 79,621 free ebooks on 17 October 2026. Its Kindle help guidance describes more than 75,000 free ebooks and explains that readers can download EPUB3 files and send them to a Kindle through Send-to-Kindle.
The collection is concentrated on older works whose U.S. copyrights have expired. “Free” here means available without a charge from Project Gutenberg; it does not mean that every modern or commercially copyrighted book is included, nor that copyright status is identical in every country.

Temporary Kindle Store promotions
Some Kindle Store books become free because a publisher runs a promotion. Amazon’s KDP documentation says eligible ebooks enrolled in KDP Select can use a Free Book Promotion for up to five days in each 90-day KDP Select enrollment period. A $0 price caused by such a promotion is temporary, so verify the price and availability when you claim the book.
Free catalog size versus books stored on the device
| Question | Answer supported by current figures |
|---|---|
| How many books can a 16GB Kindle hold? | Amazon says thousands; approximately 11.5GB is available on the current 16GB reference model. |
| Can 70,000 books fit? | Only as an assumption-dependent estimate using unusually small files; it is not an Amazon capacity rating. |
| How many free ebooks does Project Gutenberg list? | 79,621 on 17 October 2026, with a Kindle help page describing more than 75,000. |
| Does every free title download directly to Kindle? | No. You may need to download a supported file and use Send-to-Kindle. |
| Are free Kindle Store books permanent? | Not necessarily; publisher promotions can be time-limited. |
What the evidence does—and does not—show about Kindle owners
There is no authoritative survey establishing that most Kindle owners never load a free book. That claim should not be presented as a measured ownership statistic. What can be stated confidently is that Kindle owners have both substantial local capacity for ordinary ebooks and legal ways to add free titles, while the number that any one device stores depends on file type and size.
