In Lanterns, Manhunter reproduction is possible in exceptional circumstances, according to co-creator and showrunner Chris Mundy. Noah’s birth followed an accidental, untested use of the Manhunters’ tissue-regrowth technology—not a clearly established or repeatable reproductive process.
How Noah’s birth is connected to the tissue-regrowth machine
The finale links Noah’s origin to technology Zoe had used to regrow tissue. In episode five, “Lights Out,” she uses the machine to restore John Stewart’s skin after a car crash. Years earlier, she used the same technology to regrow Sheriff Kerry Kane’s finger. Something went wrong, and Kerry became pregnant with Noah, who was born a Manhunter.

Kerry cannot explain how the pregnancy happened. In an Entertainment Weekly interview reported by Jen Lennon on October 6, 2026, Mundy described the machine as capable of creating human tissue and organs. He said Noah’s birth grew out of an untested gray area in that ability. His explanation, as reported, is that reproduction can happen “in crazy circumstances.”
Was Zoe trying to create another Manhunter?
Mundy characterized the event that led to Noah’s birth as accidental, rather than a deliberate attempt by Zoe to reproduce. He also said the writers imagined that Zoe tried to repeat the result afterward but could not. Those later attempts are not shown on screen; they are part of the writers’ account of what Zoe may have done. Mundy added that Zoe might have seen the accident as an opportunity to repopulate the Manhunters after it happened.

What the explanation establishes—and what it leaves open
- Shown in the series: the machine regrows tissue, and Noah’s origin is tied to its use on Kerry.
- Mundy’s explanation: the writers understood the technology as able to create human tissue and organs, making Noah’s birth possible through an untested mishap.
- Not established: the series does not lay out a defined, repeatable process for Manhunter reproduction. Zoe’s later unsuccessful efforts are described by Mundy but are not depicted.
These details come from Lennon’s October 6, 2026 report of an Entertainment Weekly interview. The report attributes the explanation and quotations to Mundy; the account should be read as his explanation of this story, not as a general rule for how Manhunters reproduce.
