Apple documents this risk for iPhone systems that use magnetic sensors to track lens position, and Samsung warns that nearby magnets may affect AF and OIS on Galaxy phones. That does not mean every magnet will cause a fault, nor that every blurry image indicates damage.
Moving a magnetic case, mount, or metal plate away from the camera is the sensible first test. If the camera remains unreliable after the accessory is removed, the magnet alone does not establish the cause; use the manufacturer’s model-specific troubleshooting and service guidance.

What OIS and autofocus do inside a phone camera
Two different systems can affect whether a phone photo looks sharp and steady:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Optical image stabilization (OIS) reduces the visible effect of hand movement during an exposure by physically moving an optical element, such as a lens, in response to detected motion.
- Autofocus (AF) adjusts lens position so the subject appears in focus. The exact actuator, sensor arrangement, and control loop vary by phone and camera module.
These functions are related because both may require extremely precise knowledge of lens position, but they are not the same feature. A phone can have OIS on one rear camera and not another, and a manufacturer may use different AF and stabilization hardware in different models.

- 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
- 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
- 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
- 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
- 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)
How a nearby magnet can interfere
Apple’s documented iPhone mechanism
Apple describes OIS in its iPhone systems as a gyroscope-based control system. The gyroscope senses the angle of camera movement, and the phone moves the lens to counter that motion. In the closed-loop AF systems Apple describes, accelerometers measure and compensate for gravity and vibration, while magnetic sensors determine the lens position so the control system can set the corrective movement accurately.
A nearby magnet can disturb those lens-position sensors. Apple says the result may be reduced sensor accuracy or less available lens movement. The camera may still capture an image, but it can do so without the expected benefit of OIS or closed-loop AF. This is a description of the relevant iPhone implementations; it should not be treated as a specification for every phone camera.

Samsung’s warning for Galaxy phones
Samsung’s general support explanation says OIS detects hand shake and corrects it by moving the lens in the opposite direction. Samsung also warns that a magnet near a Galaxy phone may affect autofocus and OIS and can cause camera-operation problems. Its guidance notes that OIS hardware and feature availability differ among products, so a warning for Galaxy phones is not a model-by-model statement about every camera.
Samsung additionally cautions that incompatible magnetic accessories can obstruct the camera view or introduce flare. Those are physical accessory problems rather than sensor interference, but they can produce a similar impression of a camera that suddenly performs badly.
What you may notice when a magnetic accessory is involved
The following symptoms are consistent with a camera module that is being disturbed, but none proves that a magnet is the cause by itself.

| Observed symptom | What it could mean | Useful check |
|---|---|---|
| Focus hunts, locks on the wrong subject, or takes longer to settle while the accessory is attached | The accessory may be affecting a lens-position sensor or the AF control loop. | Remove the case or mount and repeat the same shot from the same distance. |
| Photos or video look shakier with the accessory fitted | OIS may have reduced effectiveness, or the accessory may be touching or constraining the camera area. | Compare a steady scene with and without the accessory, using the same camera. |
| A bright streak, haze, or flare appears after installing a mount or case | The accessory may be intruding into the optical path or reflecting light toward the lens. | Inspect the camera view and flash area, then reposition or remove the accessory. |
| The camera still fails after the magnetic item is removed | Another software, optical, mechanical, or electronic problem may be involved. | Follow the phone maker’s separate camera-failure troubleshooting rather than assuming permanent magnetic damage. |
A phone continuing to take pictures is not proof that everything is operating normally: the affected stabilization or focusing assistance may simply be unavailable or less accurate. Conversely, a single blurry frame does not prove that a magnet has damaged the module.

Use a controlled comparison rather than relying on one photograph. The aim is to change only the magnetic accessory while keeping the subject, camera, and lighting as similar as possible.
- Identify every nearby part. Check the case, folio cover, detachable ring, car mount, magnetic plate, and any metal insert around the rear cameras. A plate that is merely magnetisable can matter if it sits close to the module, even when the visible magnet is elsewhere in the mount.
- Remove the accessory completely. Take the phone out of the case and detach it from the mount. Do not test with the mount still touching the phone’s rear camera area.
- Inspect the camera opening. Look for an edge of the case, plate, or mount entering the field of view. Check whether the flash is covered or whether a reflective surface is facing the lens.
- Repeat the same camera test. Photograph a detailed, stationary subject at the same distance, then record a short clip while holding the phone as steadily as you can. If the phone has multiple rear cameras, test the lens that showed the problem and note whether the behavior changes between lenses.
- Compare results, not just one frame. A repeatable difference that appears with the accessory and disappears without it is a strong practical reason to stop using that placement. It still does not establish that the camera has suffered permanent damage.
- Check the device maker’s instructions for the exact model. Apple and Samsung both advise avoiding or removing problematic magnetic accessories, but neither warning supplies a universal distance or field-strength limit that can be applied to every phone.
Choosing a case or mount without creating a camera problem
There is no universal “safe distance” number in the manufacturer guidance cited here. Evaluate an accessory by its relationship to the specific phone rather than by a generic magnet label.

- [Quality Service] If you find any damage or other issues with the product upon receipt, please contact us immediately. We will handle it quickly
- Confirm model compatibility. A case designed for a different phone can place its magnet or metal ring directly over a camera module, even when the shape looks similar.
- Map the magnet’s location. Check whether a magnet, magnetic ring, or magnetisable plate lies beside, above, or underneath the rear camera assembly.
- Keep the optical opening clear. The accessory should not intrude into the camera or flash view. An obstruction can cause dark corners, flare, or an apparently soft image without any sensor interference.
- Look for movement or pressure. A mount that presses against the camera bump can alter alignment or physically limit a moving lens assembly.
- Use the manufacturer’s compatibility information. If the phone maker warns against magnets near the rear camera, treat that as a performance recommendation even if the accessory appears to work in a quick test.
Do not infer endorsement from the fact that a magnetic mount holds the phone securely. Holding strength and camera compatibility are separate questions.

Even a correctly functioning OIS system cannot remove every kind of blur. Apple’s archived developer documentation says OIS is most effective at longer exposure times and has limited benefit for exposure times shorter than 1/30 second. That statement describes when stabilization helps the image; it is not a magnetic-interference threshold.
Recommended Free Tools
For example, a bright scene may use a short exposure where OIS has little opportunity to improve sharpness, while a dim scene may use a longer exposure where stabilization is more useful. A blurry photo in the first situation is not evidence that a nearby magnet disabled OIS. The capture conditions, hand movement, subject movement, and the individual camera’s design all matter.

What removing the magnet can and cannot fix
When removal is a reasonable solution
If focus or stabilization problems begin only after fitting a magnetic case or attaching a mount, and controlled shots improve as soon as that item is removed, leaving the accessory off or changing its position is the appropriate remedy. A non-magnetic case made for the exact phone model avoids the specific nearby-magnet concern, while still requiring the camera opening and flash to remain unobstructed.
When removal is not enough
If the same fault occurs with no magnetic accessory attached, do not assume that the magnet caused irreversible damage. Apple directs users whose camera still does not work after magnetic accessories are removed to its separate camera troubleshooting guidance. Samsung likewise advises checking its support information for camera-operation problems. Persistent focus failure, stabilization failure, or a camera that cannot operate needs model-specific support; the presence of a magnet alone cannot diagnose a hardware failure.
What is not known from current manufacturer guidance
The cited Apple and Samsung guidance does not provide a universal magnetic-field threshold, a guaranteed minimum distance, or a model-by-model susceptibility table. It also does not quantify how many users experience interference. Therefore, claims that any magnet will damage any phone, or that a particular number of millimeters is always safe, go beyond the available manufacturer statements.
The practical conclusion is narrower and more useful: a strong magnetic or magnetisable accessory placed close to a rear camera is a documented risk for certain designs, especially where lens-position sensing is part of the AF or OIS control system. Treat the phone maker’s warning and your repeatable before-and-after test as more reliable than a generic distance rule.
A quick decision guide
- Problem appears only with a magnetic accessory: stop using that placement, choose a compatible non-magnetic alternative, or keep the magnet away from the rear camera area.
- Problem includes flare or a blocked view: inspect and reposition the accessory; the optical obstruction may be the immediate cause.
- Problem remains after complete removal: use the manufacturer’s camera troubleshooting and support path for the exact phone model.
- You are comparing accessories: prioritize model compatibility, magnet or metal placement, and an unobstructed camera and flash opening; do not rely on an assumed universal safe distance.
Magnets do not automatically ruin phone cameras. They can, however, interfere with the sensing and moving parts that some phones use for autofocus and optical stabilization. Removing the suspected accessory is a useful diagnostic step, while persistent faults require ordinary camera troubleshooting rather than a conclusion of permanent magnetic damage.
