Apple lists the MacBook Air (M2, 2022) and the 15-inch MacBook Air (M2, 2023) as compatible. Apple has not published a guaranteed final macOS-support year for either model, so no responsible answer can promise support through a specific calendar year. The practical forecast is continued major-version and security support for several more years, with less certainty each time Apple publishes a new compatibility list.
What Apple officially supports right now
Apple’s macOS Tahoe 26 compatibility page states: “You can install macOS Tahoe 26 on any of these Mac models.” The list explicitly includes two M2-based Air configurations:

- MacBook Air (M2, 2022)
- MacBook Air (15-inch, M2, 2023)
Apple’s Tahoe upgrade instructions describe compatibility more broadly as MacBook Air models with Apple silicon introduced in 2020 or later. The model-specific list is the more useful check for an owner because it names the 2022 and 2023 M2 Air directly.
This means an M2 Air is not at the edge of macOS support in October 2026: it remains eligible for Apple’s current major release. Eligibility is determined separately for each macOS version, so being compatible with Tahoe 26 does not itself guarantee compatibility with the next release.

Why there is no official “last supported year”
Apple publishes compatibility lists for individual macOS releases rather than a lifetime schedule for every Mac model. The company can say whether a model is supported by Tahoe 26, but the cited support pages do not assign the M2 Air a final year such as 2029 or 2030.
That distinction matters because two statements are often confused:
- Confirmed support: Apple has included a model on the compatibility list for a named macOS release.
- Forecast support: An estimate about how many future releases the model might receive, based on its age and Apple’s later decisions.
The first statement is verifiable today. The second is inherently uncertain until Apple publishes each year’s list. Any article or seller that presents a precise end date for the M2 Air as an Apple guarantee is going beyond the information Apple has published in the cited material.

Current status of each M2 MacBook Air
| Model | Introduction identified by Apple | Tahoe 26 status as of 16 October 2026 | Guaranteed final support year |
|---|---|---|---|
| MacBook Air | M2, 2022 | Listed as compatible | Not stated by Apple |
| MacBook Air | 15-inch, M2, 2023 | Listed as compatible | Not stated by Apple |
The two models should therefore be treated as supported Macs today, not as separate cases with different published end dates. The 15-inch version is a 2023 model in Apple’s list, while the other is identified as a 2022 M2 Air; neither has a stated terminal year.
What “macOS updates” includes
When people ask how long a Mac gets updates, they may mean several different things. Apple’s release information distinguishes the current major operating system from the maintenance releases that follow it.
Rank #2
- SUPERCHARGED BY M2: The 13.6-inch MacBook Air laptop is a portable powerhouse. Get more done faster with a next-generation 8-core CPU, up to 10-core GPU and up to 24GB of unified memory.
- UP TO 18 HOURS OF BATTERY LIFE: Go all day and into the night, thanks to the power-efficient performance of the brand new Apple M2 chip. (Up to 18 hours of video playback)
- BIG, BEAUTIFUL DISPLAY: The 13.6-inch Liquid Retina display features 500 nits of brightness, P3 wide color, and support for 1 billion colors for vibrant images and incredible detail.
- STRIKINGLY THIN DESIGN: The redesigned MacBook Air is more portable than ever and weighs just 2.7 lbs. It’s the incredibly capable laptop that lets you work, play or create anything, anywhere.
- VERSATILE CONNECTIVITY: The MacBook Air features a MagSafe charging port, two Thunderbolt 3 ports and a headphone jack that lets you connect and power high-speed accessories.
Major macOS upgrades
A major upgrade changes the macOS version number and has its own hardware compatibility list. Tahoe 26 is the current example in the cited material. The M2 Air’s inclusion means owners can install that major release, subject to Apple’s normal upgrade process and the Mac’s available storage and other on-device conditions.
Security and maintenance releases
Apple’s security-release index lists multiple macOS Tahoe releases through August and September 2026. Tahoe’s first release date in that index is 15 September 2025. Those entries demonstrate that Macs supported by the current major version continue to receive security maintenance after the initial launch; they do not establish a future end date for the M2 Air.

Application compatibility
Operating-system eligibility is not the same as a promise that every third-party application will support an M2 Air indefinitely. App developers set their own requirements, and an application may require a newer macOS version even while Apple still supports the Mac. Check the requirement for a particular app separately when it matters for work, school or a managed deployment.
How long is a reasonable forecast?
The defensible forecast dated 16 October 2026 is “several more years” of major-version and security support, but that phrase is an estimate rather than a warranty. It is deliberately less precise than a year because Apple has not published a duration figure or final-support date for this model.
Use the forecast as a planning assumption, not as a contractual commitment:

- IMPRESSIVELY BIG, IMPOSSIBLY THIN — The 15-inch MacBook Air makes room for more of what you love with a spacious Liquid Retina display. The durable 100 percent recycled aluminum enclosure is strikingly thin and light.
- SUPERCHARGED BY M2 — Get more done faster with a powerful 8-core CPU, 10-core GPU, and up to 24GB of unified memory.
- UP TO 18 HOURS OF BATTERY LIFE — Go all day with the power-efficient performance of the Apple M2 chip. (Battery life varies by use and configuration. See apple.com/batteries for more information.)
- SPACIOUS, BEAUTIFUL DISPLAY — The high-resolution, 15.3-inch Liquid Retina display features 500 nits of brightness, P3 wide color, and support for one billion colors for vibrant images and incredible detail. (The display on the 15-inch MacBook Air has rounded corners at the top. When measured as a standard rectangular shape, the screen is 15.3 inches diagonally; actual viewable area is less.)
- SILENT DESIGN — MacBook Air features a fanless design that runs completely silent, no matter the task.
- The M2 Air is still on the current Tahoe 26 list, so one full major-release decision has already gone in its favor.
- Apple’s security index shows Tahoe receiving releases in 2026, confirming active maintenance for the current supported generation.
- Future compatibility depends on Apple’s next annual hardware list. The forecast becomes less certain as more release cycles pass.
- No independent longevity statistic or Apple-published support-duration figure establishes an exact number of remaining years.
For a purchase or replacement decision, “several more years, subject to annual confirmation” is more accurate than a manufactured deadline. Revisit the question when Apple announces the next macOS compatibility list.
How to check your own M2 Air before upgrading
Apple’s instructions provide a simple way to identify the installed operating system before you compare it with the compatibility information.
- Open the Apple menu in the upper-left corner of the screen.
- Select About This Mac.
- Record the macOS version and the Mac model information shown there.
- Open Apple’s compatibility information for the macOS release you want to install.
- Look for the exact model wording. For Tahoe 26, the relevant entries are “MacBook Air (M2, 2022)” and “MacBook Air (15-inch, M2, 2023).”
- Before starting the upgrade, make a current backup and allow time for the download, installation and restart. The compatibility list answers whether Apple supports the model; it does not predict how long the installation will take on an individual Mac.
If your About This Mac screen identifies a different generation, do not assume the M2 result applies. Apple evaluates each listed model and release combination independently.
How to plan around the next compatibility list
The most reliable way to manage the M2 Air’s remaining support is to use an annual review rather than a fixed end date.
Check the model and current release
Keep a note of the model shown in About This Mac and the macOS version currently installed. This prevents a 13-inch M2 Air and a 15-inch M2 Air from being confused with similarly named models using a different chip generation.

Read the new Apple list when it appears
When Apple publishes the next major macOS compatibility page, search the list for the exact model name. If it appears, the Mac is eligible for that major release. If it does not appear, treat that as the end of major-version eligibility for that release and then check Apple’s security information for the versions Apple continues to maintain.
Separate security needs from feature needs
A Mac can remain useful for existing applications even after it stops receiving a new major feature release. Conversely, a business may require the newest macOS for a specific application, management policy or security baseline. Decide which requirement controls your replacement date instead of using the words “supported” and “usable” as if they meant the same thing.
Budget with uncertainty
If you are buying an M2 Air, compare its current purchase price with the cost of moving to a newer Apple-silicon generation. The M2 model’s present Tahoe eligibility is a concrete benefit; its future support beyond the next lists is not a guaranteed resale or ownership value. A lower price can make the uncertainty acceptable, while a small price difference may favor a newer generation for buyers who need the longest possible planning horizon.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is the M2 MacBook Air still worth buying for software support?
For a buyer who needs a Mac that can run Apple’s current operating system, the answer is yes in the narrow, verifiable sense: both M2 Air models are on the Tahoe 26 list as of October 2026. That gives the computer access to the current major macOS release and to the Tahoe maintenance releases Apple lists in 2026.
Whether it is the right purchase depends on four questions:
Best Value
- IMPRESSIVELY BIG, IMPOSSIBLY THIN — The 15-inch MacBook Air makes room for more of what you love with a spacious Liquid Retina display. The durable 100 percent recycled aluminum enclosure is strikingly thin and light.
- SUPERCHARGED BY M2 — Get more done faster with a powerful 8-core CPU, 10-core GPU, and up to 24GB of unified memory.

- SILENT DESIGN — MacBook Air features a fanless design that runs completely silent, no matter the task.
- Current eligibility: Is the exact M2 model listed for the macOS version you require?
- Remaining-risk tolerance: Are you comfortable with a forecast of several more years rather than a promised end date?
- Security requirements: Do your personal or workplace rules require a currently maintained major release?
- Price difference: Does the M2 Air’s price compensate you for buying an older generation instead of a newer Apple-silicon Mac?
Someone replacing a Mac for a short or medium planning cycle may reasonably choose the M2 Air while it remains on Apple’s current list. Someone making a long, fixed-term purchase should place more weight on the absence of a guaranteed support schedule and verify the next compatibility announcement before committing.
What happens when Apple eventually drops the model?
Apple has not announced that date for either M2 Air in the cited information. When a future compatibility list omits a model, the immediate implication is that the Mac cannot install that particular major release through Apple’s supported upgrade path. The Mac does not suddenly stop working: existing software can continue to run, but the operating system will no longer move to that named major version.
Security coverage must then be checked against Apple’s security-release index rather than assumed. The Tahoe entries through August and September 2026 show how Apple records maintenance releases for a current major version, but they do not establish how long an older major version will remain patched after a later release arrives. Treat that as a point requiring a fresh check at the time, especially for internet-facing work or an organization with a defined security policy.

- Turning a forecast into a promise: “Several more years” is not an Apple guarantee of support through a named year.
- Using the purchase year alone: Verify the model and chip wording in About This Mac; Apple lists compatibility by specific model.
- Confusing a major upgrade with every update: Tahoe eligibility and Tahoe security releases are related but not identical claims.
- Assuming current support is permanent: Tahoe 26 eligibility is confirmed as of 16 October 2026, not for every future macOS release.
- Ignoring application requirements: An app’s own minimum macOS version can become the limiting factor before Apple’s hardware list does.
Bottom line for owners and buyers
The M2 MacBook Air remains a supported Mac today: Apple lists both the 2022 model and the 15-inch 2023 model for macOS Tahoe 26. Apple’s published pages do not provide a final support year, so any exact deadline is speculation. Plan on several more years as a reasonable, dated forecast, keep security requirements in view, and recheck Apple’s compatibility list every year before relying on the M2 Air for a long-term purchase or deployment.
