Keep an Android phone until it stops being secure, dependable or capable of running the apps and networks you need. For a current long-support model, that can mean roughly five to seven years. An older budget handset may reach its practical limit much sooner. The most reliable deadline is the exact model’s promised security-update end date—not the phone’s age or the brand name on its case.
Before replacing it, check software support, battery and charging condition, physical damage, performance, storage and app compatibility. Repairing a battery or charging port is often sensible while the phone is still supported. Replacement becomes the safer choice when security support has ended, essential apps no longer run, the device crashes or shuts down, or the repair would consume most of the cost of a suitable replacement after trade-in.

There is no universal Android replacement age
Two Android phones purchased in the same year can have very different useful lives. Manufacturers set support periods by model, region and sometimes carrier edition. A premium phone may receive security patches for years after launch, while an inexpensive model can have a shorter window. Android’s version number alone does not tell you how long a particular handset will remain protected.

The security-update end date is the clearest point at which keeping a phone becomes a security decision rather than merely a performance decision. Once the manufacturer stops issuing patches, newly discovered vulnerabilities may remain uncorrected. You can continue using an unsupported phone for low-risk tasks, but banking, password management, work accounts and other sensitive activity carry more exposure.

Android Enterprise Recommended set a historical baseline of at least three years of security updates, delivered within 90 days of release, in the program’s 2018 requirements. That was a program standard at the time, not a promise that every Android phone sold today receives exactly three years. Check the current policy for your exact model.
Hardware can end the practical life first
A phone can still have years of promised updates yet be unpleasant or unreliable because its battery has degraded, its charging port is intermittent, its screen is damaged or its storage is full. Conversely, a well-maintained phone may remain perfectly adequate until its support period expires. Treat software support and physical condition as separate clocks.
How to find your phone’s real support end date
Do not estimate the deadline from the purchase year. Identify the precise model and consult the manufacturer’s support policy for the edition sold in your country.
- Open Settings and record the security patch level. On many phones this is under Settings > About phone > Android version; menu names vary by manufacturer. Note the date shown for the Android security update.
- Record the model number and software variant. Look under Settings > About phone for the model name, model number, storage configuration and, where shown, carrier or region information. A similarly named phone can have a different support schedule.
- Find the manufacturer’s official support table or policy. Search by the complete model number, not just a family name. Confirm both the final security-update date and the number of promised Android version upgrades.
- Check the US edition and purchase timing. Support terms can differ by country, carrier and launch date. A promise may begin at the phone’s release rather than the day you bought it, so use the exact US model and its original availability date when that distinction matters.
- Save the result. Put the end date in a calendar reminder six months ahead. That gives you time to compare repair, trade-in and replacement options without waiting for the last patch to arrive.
If the manufacturer does not publish a date, ask its support channel for a written confirmation. “The phone still receives updates” is not the same as a guaranteed end date.
What current support windows imply about lifespan

| Support evidence | What it means for a buyer | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| At least three years of security updates, with patches delivered within 90 days | A minimum benchmark used when Android Enterprise Recommended requirements were published | Historical 2018 program baseline; not a universal current promise |
| Up to seven years of security updates for eligible Galaxy devices | Some newer eligible models can remain protected for about five to seven years | Samsung policy stated from January 2024; eligibility and terms are model-specific |
| 16.5 security updates and 2.5 major OS upgrades on average | Shows that update delivery in a historical device sample was uneven and that security patches can outnumber major Android releases | Federal Trade Commission study, analysis published in 2023; an average is not a guarantee for your phone |
Longer promises make a five-to-seven-year ownership plan realistic for some newer phones, but they do not make every component last that long. Battery replacements, screen repairs and storage limits still determine whether the device is comfortable to use.
“Many customers are choosing to keep their devices for longer whether they like to have a specific smartphone model or want to help contribute to a more sustainable world.”

Run a condition check before you shop
When support is still active, evaluate the phone’s current condition in a consistent order. A single weak component does not automatically justify a new handset.
Battery endurance and health
Look for a sudden drop in runtime, a percentage that falls rapidly under light use, unexpected shutdowns in cold weather or a battery that cannot reach a full charge. Android does not expose an identical battery-health percentage on every model, so use the manufacturer’s diagnostics if available and treat real-world behavior as evidence.

Swelling, a lifting screen or unusual heat while charging is a safety issue. Stop using the device, disconnect it from power and obtain professional service rather than continuing to test it.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesCharging port and accessories
Intermittent charging can come from lint, a worn cable or a damaged port. Try a known-good charger and cable, inspect the port with a light and follow the manufacturer’s cleaning guidance. Do not force metal objects into the connector. If wireless charging works but the port does not, a port repair may restore years of use; if neither method is reliable, replacement deserves priority.
Screen, frame and water resistance
A cracked screen can expose the phone to moisture and make touch input unreliable. A bent frame may prevent a proper seal even when the phone was originally rated for water resistance. Repair value depends on the remaining support period and whether the repair restores safe, dependable use.
Speed, storage and thermal behavior
Check free storage in Settings > Storage. Nearly full storage can cause failed updates, camera errors and sluggishness; removing downloads, moving photos and uninstalling unused apps may solve those symptoms. Persistent stuttering after space is available, severe heat during ordinary tasks or repeated app crashes can indicate aging hardware rather than a cleanup problem.
App and network compatibility
Open the apps you actually need: banking, authentication, work, transport, health and messaging. Confirm that they still install and sign in. Also verify that the phone supports the cellular bands and 5G or VoLTE features required by your carrier. A device can be secure yet unusable if a required app or network service drops support for its Android version.

Repair or replace: a practical decision framework
Compare a repair with the net replacement cost: the price of a suitable new or certified-resale phone after trade-in, minus any value your current handset can still command. There is no universal dollar threshold because parts, labor, region and model value differ.
| Symptom | First action | When replacement is more sensible |
|---|---|---|
| Short battery life, no swelling | Obtain a battery-health diagnosis and a replacement quote | The battery is unavailable, the phone is near its security end date, or the quote approaches the net replacement cost |
| Loose or failed charging port | Test another cable and charger; have the port inspected | The port repair is expensive relative to the phone’s value, or charging and data transfer remain unreliable |
| Cracked screen | Back up data and request a screen-repair estimate | The frame is bent, water resistance is compromised, or screen repair is close to a supported replacement |
| Slow performance or full storage | Free storage, update apps and remove unnecessary background work | Required apps still fail, the processor cannot handle them or the phone is no longer receiving security patches |
| Random shutdowns or crashes | Back up immediately and run the manufacturer’s diagnostics | Failures continue after troubleshooting, especially if the phone is unsupported or overheating |
When a battery repair is worthwhile
A battery replacement is usually the strongest repair candidate when the phone has a current security patch, adequate speed and an undamaged screen and port. Ask whether the replacement part is genuine or appropriately certified, whether the repair affects water resistance and what warranty covers the work.
When to stop repairing
Do not stack repairs on a phone that is approaching its security-update end date. A battery today followed by a screen or port failure soon afterward can cost more than moving to a supported model. Include the value of your time, temporary loss of the phone and the risk that an old part will fail next.

Security or compliance requirements
Employers, insurers and financial services may require a current patch level or a minimum Android version. If a work profile or security app blocks an unsupported device, that requirement overrides a personal preference to keep it longer.
Essential apps no longer run
An app developer may raise its minimum Android version before the manufacturer ends security support. If the app is central to your work, transport or payments and there is no safe alternative, replacement is justified even with patches remaining.

Reliability affects safety
Frequent shutdowns, a failing emergency-call function, a damaged battery or a screen that obscures navigation are not ordinary aging you must tolerate. Back up your information and replace or professionally repair the phone.
How to choose the replacement
Compare phones on the features that determine how long you can keep them, not only on launch specifications.
| Comparison point | What to verify |
|---|---|
| Security-update end date | The manufacturer’s written promise for the exact US model and its release date |
| Android version upgrades | How many major OS updates are included, separately from security patches |
| Battery | Capacity, expected endurance and whether an authorized replacement part is available |
| Repairability | Parts access, service documentation and whether screen or battery work preserves seals |
| Performance headroom | Processor and memory sufficient for the apps you expect to use several years from now |
| Storage | Enough internal space for photos, offline media, updates and app growth; consider expansion only if the model supports it |
| Camera and connectivity | Required camera features, carrier bands, 5G, Wi-Fi and eSIM or physical-SIM compatibility |
| Warranty and total cost | Warranty length, repair terms, trade-in credit and the final amount you will pay |
Do not treat a long support promise as permission to ignore hardware. A phone with ample update years but no practical repair route can cost more to keep than a slightly less expensive model with accessible parts.

Plan the handover and retirement
- Back up locally and to your chosen cloud service. Include photos, messages, authenticator accounts, contacts, device-specific notes and any files stored outside the normal backup.
- Move authentication before wiping. Transfer authenticator apps, passkeys, banking tokens and eSIM service while the old phone still works. Keep recovery codes available.
- Verify the new phone. Make a test call, send messages, sign in to essential apps, confirm mobile data and check that photos and contacts are present.
- Remove accounts and reset the old phone. Sign out of Google and manufacturer accounts, remove SIM and memory cards, then use the factory-reset option in Settings. A reset helps prevent the next owner from accessing your data.
- Choose reuse, trade-in or certified recycling. Record the phone’s condition honestly; trade-in value depends on model, carrier status and physical condition and must be checked at the time you sell.
The bottom line for your phone
Keep your Android phone for as long as its security updates continue and it remains reliable for your actual workload. Start planning a replacement about six months before the published support end date. If support is active, a battery or port repair can extend ownership; if support has ended or essential functions are failing, put the repair quote beside the net cost of a supported replacement and choose the safer total-cost option.
