How Long Should a Smartphone Last With Software Updates?

Plan on roughly five to seven years of secure use from a current mainstream smartphone—but only if its documented support period lasts that long. Google says Pixel 8 and newer phones receive seven years of updates, while Samsung documents seven years of support and security patches for Galaxy S24 devices. Your practical replacement date is whichever comes first: the security-support end date, an unreliable battery or other hardware, loss of essential app compatibility, or a repair bill that no longer makes financial sense.

What “phone lifespan” actually means

A smartphone has several different lifespans, and confusing them leads to poor buying and replacement decisions. A phone may still power on long after it stops receiving security fixes, while a worn battery can make a well-supported phone frustrating to use.

Security-support lifespan

This is the period in which the manufacturer promises security patches that address newly discovered vulnerabilities. It is the most important date for deciding whether an older phone remains safe for banking, work accounts, private messages and other sensitive tasks. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) explains that “Updates to your operating system often include critical patches and protections against security threats.”

Major operating-system lifespan

Major Android or iOS releases add features and can change app requirements, but their schedule may differ from security-patch coverage. A manufacturer can continue security patches after major-version upgrades stop, or it can provide both for a stated period. Always read the policy wording carefully instead of treating “years of updates” as a guarantee of a specific number of major releases.

Hardware and app lifespan

Battery capacity, charging components, displays, storage and processors age independently of software support. Apps can also stop supporting an old operating-system version, a processor architecture or outdated security components. Consequently, the useful life of a phone is the shortest of its software, hardware and app-compatibility lifespans.

How many years do today’s phones get updates?

Support is model-specific, not a universal property of a brand. Two phones released in the same year can have very different end dates. Count the commitment from the device’s actual first-sale date in your region, not simply from the announcement date.

Example Published commitment How to interpret it
Google Pixel 8 and later Seven years of updates from first availability on the US Google Store The seven-year clock starts when that model first became available through the US Google Store. A different regional sale date can affect your remaining time.
Samsung Galaxy S24 devices Seven years of support and security patches Samsung’s documentation covers support and security patches; check the exact model and market for the applicable start date.
Other smartphones Not stated here Do not infer a duration. Find the manufacturer’s policy for the precise model, edition and region before buying.

A seven-year policy does not mean every component will last seven years without service. It means the manufacturer has stated a software-support window. Battery replacement, repairability, storage capacity and performance still determine whether keeping the phone is sensible.

Why software updates are part of the phone’s usable life

Security patches reduce exposure to vulnerabilities in the operating system, drivers and bundled components. They can also preserve compatibility with authentication systems, browsers and enterprise-management tools. Running an unsupported phone is not an automatic breach, but the risk grows as unpatched flaws become public and more apps require newer platform protections.

Updates also affect reliability and features. A major operating-system release may add accessibility controls, improve privacy settings or change how apps handle permissions. Conversely, an update can require more storage or expose performance limits on old hardware. Keep enough free storage for downloads and maintain a current backup before installing a major release.

Support transparency is uneven across the industry. In a 2024 review of 184 smart products, the FTC found that 161 product pages did not state a support duration or end date; nearly 89% of the surveyed pages failed to disclose that information clearly. Treat a missing date as an information gap, not as an implied promise.

How to calculate your phone’s realistic replacement date

Use four dates or conditions rather than a generic “replace every two years” rule.

  1. Find the security-support end date. Locate the manufacturer’s support page for your exact model, storage edition and region. Record whether the clock starts at announcement, first shipment or first retail availability.
  2. Separate security patches from major upgrades. Note the end date for security fixes and the separate policy for operating-system versions. The security date controls the safety decision.
  3. Assess battery and hardware condition. Check battery-health information, charging behavior, unexpected shutdowns, screen damage, camera function, speakers and biometric sensors. A battery that cannot last through normal use can end practical ownership early.
  4. Check the apps you cannot lose. Verify that banking, work, identity, messaging and authentication apps still install and function on the phone’s operating-system version. An app-compatibility failure can make replacement necessary before the security date.
  5. Compare repair economics. Price a battery or other needed repair, including labor and shipping. Compare that total with a supported replacement that meets your storage, camera, network-band and performance needs.

The resulting endpoint is the earliest of those conditions. If security support ends in 2029 but the battery becomes unreliable in 2027, the battery—not 2029—sets the practical date unless replacement restores dependable use.

Battery aging: when replacement extends a phone’s life

Rechargeable batteries are consumable parts. Apple states: “All rechargeable batteries are consumables and have a limited lifespan – eventually their capacity and performance decline and they need to be replaced.” The same physical principle applies to lithium-ion batteries in other phones.

Signs a battery is the limiting part

  • Battery percentage falls rapidly during ordinary tasks or the phone shuts down with charge remaining.
  • The device becomes unusually hot during light use or charging.
  • Charging is intermittent, dramatically slower or only works when the cable is held at an angle.
  • The rear panel or screen begins lifting, which can indicate swelling and requires prompt service rather than continued charging.

When a battery repair is worthwhile

Replacement is usually the lower-waste, lower-cost choice when the phone still receives security patches, runs your essential apps, has adequate storage and has no major damage. Use the manufacturer or an authorized provider where available, and ask whether the repair affects water-resistance seals or biometric calibration. A repair can restore runtime, but it does not extend the manufacturer’s software-support end date.

When not to repair the battery

Replacement is harder to justify when security support has ended, several components are failing, the phone lacks required network bands, or the repair approaches the price of a suitable supported model. A very old battery may also be a symptom of broader wear in the charging port, display adhesive or storage system.

Repairability and parts access change the calculation

Two phones with identical update policies can have different total ownership costs. Before purchase, check whether the manufacturer provides genuine parts, service manuals or an authorized repair route in your country. Ask how long parts are expected to remain available and whether a repair requires specialized calibration.

  • Screen and back-glass damage: A cracked panel can expose internal components to moisture and may cost more to replace than an aging phone is worth.
  • Storage: Phones without expandable storage may become impractical as operating-system files, photos and app data grow. Buy enough capacity for the full support period.
  • Parts and labor location: Availability, taxes and labor prices vary by country. A repair that is economical in one region may not be in another.

What to compare before buying a phone

Use this checklist when evaluating a new device or an older discounted model.

Question Why it matters What to record
When does security support end? It defines the latest date for confident use of sensitive accounts. Exact date, model, region and starting event.
How long are major OS updates provided? Feature availability and app compatibility can depend on the platform version. Number of promised years or releases, separately from security patches.
What is the battery replacement route? A replaceable battery can extend ownership past the first battery cycle. Authorized providers, estimated price and local availability.
Can it be repaired? Parts and documentation affect total cost and downtime. Parts access, service options and water-resistance implications.
Will it meet future app and network needs? Support is irrelevant if the phone lacks storage, performance or carrier compatibility. Storage, processor headroom, carrier bands and required apps.

For a phone bought late in its sales cycle, subtract the time since first availability from the advertised support period. A “seven-year phone” with two years already elapsed has about five years remaining, subject to the manufacturer’s exact terms.

Should you buy a phone with seven years of updates?

Usually, yes—if you expect to keep the phone for four years or more and the hardware meets your needs. A long commitment can spread the purchase cost over more secure years, reduce electronic waste and make a battery replacement worthwhile. It is less valuable if you replace phones frequently, need a specialized camera or gaming performance the model cannot sustain, or are buying near the end of its support window.

Questions to ask before accepting the headline number

  • Is the commitment for both security patches and major operating-system updates?
  • From which date and in which country is the period measured?
  • Does the policy cover every regional variant, carrier edition and storage configuration?
  • Are replacement batteries and screens available locally?
  • Will the phone have enough storage and performance for the apps you expect to use in five or more years?

When is an old phone no longer secure?

The clearest warning is an expired security-support date. You should also treat a phone as unsuitable for sensitive use when it has missed patches for a prolonged period, cannot install current security updates, or no longer supports essential authentication and banking apps. An unsupported phone may still be usable for low-risk offline tasks, but avoid relying on it for passwords, payments or work credentials.

Before replacing it, back up photos and messages, transfer authenticator accounts, sign out of payment services, enable a screen lock and perform a factory reset. Recycle or return the device through an electronics program that accepts batteries; do not place a swollen battery in household trash.

A practical keep, repair or replace decision

Condition Best action
Security patches are current; battery and hardware are reliable Keep using the phone and reassess at the next support milestone.
Security patches are current; battery is weak but the rest is sound Obtain a battery-replacement quote and compare it with a supported replacement.
Security support is ending soon; repair is minor and inexpensive Repair only if the remaining supported period justifies the cost and your apps still work.
Security support has ended or essential apps no longer run Replace the phone for sensitive or everyday use, even if the hardware appears intact.
Several hardware faults or a repair quote near replacement cost Replace with a model whose support end date and repair options are documented.

The most defensible answer to “How long should a smartphone last?” is therefore conditional: keep it while security updates arrive and it remains reliable; repair a sound phone when a battery is the only failing part; replace it when support, app compatibility, hardware reliability or repair economics reaches its limit.
