How Long Is Hell Is Us, and What Can You Do After Finishing the Story?

Hell Is Us takes roughly 12–25 hours to complete its main story. A completionist run usually falls around 25–35 hours or longer, depending on how much you explore, solve optional puzzles, adjust enemy difficulty and pursue trophies. After Act 3, your save returns you to the final story location for continued exploration and cleanup, but there is no New Game Plus. Several Good Deeds, NPC conversations and relic-related requirements can be missed during the story, so a completely clean single-run completion requires some planning.

How many hours does Hell Is Us take to beat?

There is no official campaign-length figure from the publisher. Published estimates instead put the main story between about 12 and 25 hours, with the difference largely explained by how much a player explores and how quickly they solve environmental puzzles.

Source Main story estimate Completionist estimate How to interpret it
GameSpot 12–20 hours 25–35 hours An editorial range that notes adjustable enemy difficulty as one reason playtimes vary.
PCGamesN 20–25 hours Over 35 hours Based on a staff member’s review playthrough, with optional exploration included in the longer figure.

For planning purposes, allow about 12–25 hours for the story and 25–35-plus hours for broad completion. Those are outlet estimates, not a guaranteed timer or a publisher statistic. A player who follows only critical objectives may finish near the lower end; someone who investigates every region, revisits clues and works through optional puzzles can exceed the upper end.

Why the estimates vary so much

Exploration is part of progression

PlayStation describes Hell Is Us as a third-person action-adventure game with a semi-open world. Its exploration design deliberately removes the usual map, compass and quest-marker guidance. You are expected to read the environment, remember landmarks and decide where to investigate next. That makes two players’ routes genuinely different: one may move directly between known objectives, while another spends hours testing paths, searching buildings and returning to earlier areas.

Hell is Us – PlayStation 5
  • A HOSTILE WORLD: In addition to the civil war dividing the country, the region is suffering from a mysterious calamity, which has given rise to supernatural creatures that no modern weapon can defeat. Your drone and sword from a different age are your faithful allies as you cut a path through lands infested with terrifying chimeras and try to unravel the mystery of their appearance.
  • A UNIQUE EXPLORATION SYSTEM: No map, no compass, no quest markers. Following your instincts is part of the adventure. Enjoy a unique experience that uses innovative writing and level design to let you make your own decisions and follow your instincts as you explore. Your discoveries are yours alone.
  • COMBAT AGAINST ORIGINAL CREATURES: Swords, spears and axes. A wide range of weapons forged specially for fighting these supernatural creatures is available. You must learn how to fight these monsters and use your drone wisely to stay alive.
  • 'The central theme of Hell is Us is that human violence is a perpetual cycle fueled by human emotions and passions.'' – Jonathan Jacques-Belletête, Creative Director

Puzzles can stop the clock or extend it

Progression includes mysteries and environmental puzzles rather than a purely linear chain of combat encounters. If you recognize a clue quickly, a section can be brief. If you need to compare symbols, search for a route or revisit a location with new information, the same section can take considerably longer. The game’s lack of conventional navigation assistance makes observation and note-taking part of the effective playtime.

Difficulty changes combat duration

GameSpot specifically notes adjustable enemy difficulty as a contributor to the range. Lower difficulty can shorten repeated encounters, while a tougher setting may require more attempts, equipment preparation or cautious exploration around hostile areas. Difficulty does not create a separate campaign, but it can materially change the hours spent reaching the ending.

What counts as a completionist playthrough?

“Completionist” is not a single official checklist with one fixed duration. In practical terms, it means finishing the story while pursuing the optional objectives and collectibles that support the trophy list. Depending on your standard, that can include:

  • Solving remaining Mysteries and environmental puzzles.
  • Completing Timeloops.
  • Opening Vaults of Forbidden Knowledge.
  • Finding Research Items and other collectibles.
  • Collecting and upgrading equipment.
  • Defeating remaining Hollow enemies.
  • Finishing trophy requirements tied to exploration, encounters and character interactions.

That is why one source describes completion as 25–35 hours while another reports more than 35. The difference reflects both route efficiency and what each writer included in “complete,” not a contradiction about the length of the critical path.

What happens after you finish Act 3?

According to PowerPyx’s walkthrough and trophy roadmap, completing Act 3 does not lock you into a separate post-game menu or end your save. Reloading after the ending places you back at the final story location. From there, you can continue exploring accessible areas and work through many unfinished optional objectives and trophies.

This makes the ending a useful cleanup point, but not a guarantee that every requirement can be recovered. Story progression can close specific interactions, so post-game access should be treated as an opportunity to finish most exploration—not as protection against all missables.

Activities that can remain

  • Mysteries and puzzles: Return to locations where clues or routes were unresolved and test solutions you skipped during the campaign.
  • Timeloops: Complete outstanding loop-related objectives listed by your trophy or collectible tracking.
  • Vaults of Forbidden Knowledge: Search for and open vaults you bypassed while following the main path.
  • Research Items and collectibles: Revisit regions methodically, checking interiors and side paths rather than relying on a conventional map marker.
  • Equipment upgrades: Gather the materials or items needed to finish upgrades that were optional during the story.
  • Hollow encounters: Clear remaining enemies if your completion target includes every combat-related requirement.
  • Trophies: Use a trophy roadmap to identify which objectives are exploration-based and which depend on a conversation or deed that had to happen earlier.

What can be missed before the ending?

The important limitation is that not every objective is safely recoverable after Act 3. PowerPyx identifies several categories that can become unavailable as story events advance.

Good Deeds

Some Good Deeds are tied to a particular situation or point in the story. If you pass the relevant event without completing the deed, returning after the ending may not recreate the same opportunity. Treat each Good Deed as time-sensitive rather than assuming it will remain in the world indefinitely.

NPC conversations

Character interactions can change or disappear as the narrative moves forward. Speak to notable NPCs when you first encounter them, and revisit them after major story developments if the game still allows it. This is especially important when a trophy or collectible requirement mentions a conversation rather than an item found in the environment.

Relic-related requirements

Some relic objectives are linked to progression states or interactions that can close later. If a guide identifies a relic requirement as missable, complete it before advancing the associated story event instead of postponing it for post-game cleanup.

Because the game offers no universal guarantee that all interactions remain available, a single-run completion attempt should combine normal exploration with a missables checklist. You do not need to stop the story after every room, but you should resolve a flagged Good Deed, NPC conversation or relic task when it appears.

Does Hell Is Us have New Game Plus?

No. PowerPyx reports that Hell Is Us has no New Game Plus mode. Finishing the story therefore does not unlock a second campaign with carried-over upgrades, altered encounters or a higher-level replay structure.

If you want another full playthrough, it is a standard new run rather than a New Game Plus cycle. For most players, the practical alternative is to keep the completed save and use the return to the final story location to finish eligible side content before starting over.

How to plan a single-run completion

  1. Choose your completion target. Decide whether you want only the story, story plus broad exploration, or every trophy. The target determines how much backtracking and note-taking is worthwhile.
  2. Record missable interactions. When a guide or in-game clue identifies a Good Deed, NPC conversation or relic requirement as time-sensitive, complete it before continuing the related story sequence.
  3. Explore before crossing major story thresholds. Search nearby paths, buildings and clue locations before triggering an event that clearly advances the narrative. This reduces the risk of leaving a local objective behind.
  4. Keep track of unresolved categories. Maintain a simple list for Mysteries, Timeloops, Vaults of Forbidden Knowledge, Research Items, upgrades and Hollow encounters. Mark the location and status rather than relying on memory.
  5. Finish the campaign normally. Do not delay the ending solely because you expect every optional objective to be mandatory before Act 3; most cleanup remains available afterward.
  6. Reload after Act 3. Use the returned final-story save as your cleanup base, then work through the outstanding list in a deliberate route.
  7. Start a new run only for closed requirements. If a missed Good Deed, conversation or relic condition is no longer available, a fresh playthrough is required because there is no New Game Plus shortcut.

A practical post-story cleanup route

Begin with your tracking list

Start by separating objectives into two groups: location-based tasks you can search for and interaction-based tasks that may already be closed. Clear the location-based group first so you do not repeatedly revisit the same region while checking collectibles and puzzles.

Prioritize clustered activities

When returning to an area, combine tasks in one visit: investigate unresolved Mysteries, open nearby Vaults of Forbidden Knowledge, collect Research Items, complete a Timeloop and defeat remaining Hollows before moving on. The world’s exploration-first design rewards a route built around landmarks rather than a sequence of quest markers.

Check trophies last, not first

Once collectibles, upgrades and combat objectives are complete, compare the remaining trophies against your missables notes. This reveals whether the final gap is ordinary cleanup or a story-dependent requirement that cannot be restored on the current save.

Bottom line on Hell Is Us length and endgame

Expect a 12–25-hour story and roughly 25–35 hours or more for completion-focused play. The game returns you to the final story location after Act 3, leaving substantial exploration, puzzle, collectible, upgrade, enemy and trophy cleanup. However, Good Deeds, certain NPC conversations and some relic-related requirements can be missed during progression, and there is no New Game Plus. Handle those interactions when they arise, then use the post-story save for everything that remains accessible.
