Budget about 4–8 hours for a focused New Austin sweep and roughly 8–15 hours for a thorough, completionist cleanup. Those are planning estimates rather than published New Austin-only averages. They assume you already have normal epilogue access, use ordinary travel, and follow a route or checklist instead of wandering without a plan.
New Austin is normally locked until the epilogue, so it is a late-game cleanup region. Your actual time depends on whether you are checking only landmarks and nearby collectibles or combining the area with legendary hunts, challenge progress, long rides and broader 100% completion work.

The practical time estimates
| Goal | What you are doing | Planning time |
|---|---|---|
| Focused regional sweep | Visit the main settlements and points of interest, collect obvious nearby items, inspect the map and complete a short list of targets. | About 4–8 hours |
| Thorough regional cleanup | Systematically cover the map, work through collectibles that belong to the region, attempt its legendary-animal content and clean up missed discoveries. | About 8–15 hours |
| Entire-game 100% completion | Every required category across the whole game, including missions and events, collectibles, compendium, player objectives and miscellaneous tasks. | Not a New Austin-only figure; RDR2.org reports 170–190 hours for a full completionist playthrough (2026). |
The New Austin ranges are editorial planning estimates inferred from the documented workload and geography. They are not a measured average from a controlled test. Casual exploration, failed hunts, detours and time spent on unrelated objectives can push either band higher.

When you can enter New Austin
In ordinary, unmodified Story Mode, New Austin is an epilogue destination. GTABase states: “In the Story Mode of Red Dead Redemption 2, New Austin cannot be accessed until the epilogue.” That means your New Austin timer should begin after the story has moved into the epilogue, not during the main chapters.
This timing matters for planning. You can prepare maps, checklists and equipment before the finale, but normal free-roam completion of the region waits until the epilogue. Attempts to reach it earlier rely on exploits, glitches or mods and can produce an incomplete or unreliable checklist state. For a standard playthrough, treat New Austin as late-game cleanup.
What “complete New Austin” can mean
Players use “complete New Austin” for two different jobs. Defining your scope before you start is the easiest way to avoid an inaccurate time expectation.
Focused sweep
A focused sweep is a reconnaissance-and-collection pass. You ride through the principal settlements and notable locations, reveal the map, inspect points of interest, and pick up targets that are directly on your route. You may mark difficult animals or collectibles for a later visit rather than stopping for every attempt. This is the realistic interpretation of a 4–8-hour session.
Thorough cleanup
A thorough cleanup treats the region like a checklist. You revisit dead ends, search remote corners, finish the New Austin items that count toward your chosen goals, and allow time for tracking and approach failures during legendary-animal hunts. Route planning and backtracking are part of the job, which is why the longer 8–15-hour band is more appropriate.
Regional completion is not total completion
The formal Total Completion screen covers five categories: Missions & Events, Collectibles, Compendium, Player, and Miscellaneous, as documented by Fullclear (2026). Those categories span the entire game world. A New Austin sweep can satisfy some entries in each area, but it cannot by itself finish the game’s 100% checklist.
Which activities consume the hours
Collectibles and checklist travel
Collectible work is usually the largest controllable time cost. The broader 100% requirements include 30 dinosaur bones and 13 legendary fish, among other objectives. Only some of those targets are physically in New Austin, so do not assume that clearing every collectible you see there completes the corresponding game-wide category.
Rank #3
A checklist changes the job from wandering to route execution. Without one, it is easy to ride past a remote target, then spend extra time crossing the region to return. With one, you can group nearby objectives and reserve a second pass for locations that require a particular time, approach or equipment.

GamesRadar identifies New Austin locations for the Legendary Cougar, Legendary Pronghorn and Legendary Tatanka Bison. Each hunt can be quick when the clues are found immediately, or much longer when tracking breaks, the animal flees, or you arrive without the intended gear. Long rides between territories also matter because these encounters are spread across the region rather than concentrated in one hub.
Five legendary animals are listed among the game’s broader 100% requirements, but that total is not a New Austin-only count. Include only the animals assigned to your regional plan when estimating this area.

Challenges and plant-related objectives
All nine challenge strands belong to the wider completion system, yet challenge progress can send you across multiple regions. A New Austin visit may advance a strand without finishing it. The Herbalist guide notes that Herbalist 9 cannot be completed before the epilogue in an ordinary, unmodified playthrough; doing it earlier requires mods, exploits or tricks. That restriction is one reason a legitimate completion route places this work after the story reaches the epilogue.
Settlements, landmarks and discovery
Town visits, points of interest, map discovery and environmental inspection are fast when done as a connected route. They become expensive when treated as isolated trips. A player who rides freely may spend a large share of the session on roads already covered, while a player following a loop can finish the same observations with less dead travel.

How play style changes the clock
| Approach | Advantages | Typical effect on your session |
|---|---|---|
| Guided route or checklist | Groups nearby objectives, exposes omissions and limits duplicate rides. | Best fit for the focused estimate and the lower end of a thorough cleanup. |
| Free exploration | More discoveries and less pressure to follow an order. | Often exceeds the planning bands because detours and repeat travel accumulate. |
| Normal riding | Lets you hunt, inspect terrain and react to encounters while moving. | Reliable for a first sweep, but the slowest way to clear a strict checklist. |
| Fast travel where available | Reduces transit between prepared destinations. | Can shorten movement time, but it does not replace the rides needed to search unvisited ground. |
Fast travel is most useful after you have identified what remains. Using it too early can skip the very terrain where discoveries, random encounters or missed targets are located. For a first pass, ride the region in connected loops; for cleanup, fast-travel between confirmed clusters and reserve normal riding for gaps on the checklist.

A route that stays within the estimate
- Set your definition of done. Decide whether you want map discovery, regional collectibles, legendary animals, challenge progress, or every applicable entry on your own checklist. Do not mix a regional target with the entire 100% list without allowing for the extra work elsewhere.
- Prepare before leaving the epilogue hub. Carry the weapons, ammunition, tonics and horse supplies you normally use for long rides and hunting. Clear inventory space so a collectible or animal item does not force an avoidable return trip.
- Divide the map into sectors. Use a north-to-south or west-to-east loop and finish one sector before crossing to the next. Mark objectives that require a later condition instead of abandoning the route to chase them immediately.
- Combine nearby tasks. On each ride, pair a landmark inspection with collectibles, animal clues or challenge actions in the same area. The point is to make each journey serve more than one checklist entry.
- Record misses as you go. A simple note of completed locations prevents repeated searches. If a legendary hunt fails or a collectible is unavailable, mark the reason and move on rather than circling the same terrain.
- Reserve a final verification pass. Compare your notes with the in-game Total Completion categories and your chosen regional list. Use this pass to fix omissions, not to begin a second unstructured exploration session.
Three useful scheduling plans
One long focused session
Use the 4–8-hour plan when you want a clear regional overview. Start with a connected ride through settlements and major points of interest, collect items that sit directly on the route, and mark legendary-animal territories for a dedicated attempt only if they do not break your loop. This plan gives you a reliable map of what remains without promising full completion.
Two-session thorough cleanup
Split the 8–15-hour job into two objectives. In the first session, clear the map by sectors and complete straightforward collectibles. In the second, handle remote targets, legendary-animal hunts and the verification pass. Separating discovery from cleanup reduces the chance that one failed hunt consumes the time reserved for everything else.
Completionist campaign planning
If your goal is the game’s formal 100%, treat New Austin as one late-stage region in a much larger schedule. The 170–190-hour figure reported by RDR2.org (2026) covers the entire completionist playthrough, including content outside New Austin. Keep a separate regional checklist so progress in this area is not mistaken for completion of the five global categories.
Why a New Austin run often takes longer than expected
- Unplanned travel: crossing the map for one missed item can add more time than the search itself.
- Failed approaches: legendary animals may require repeated tracking or repositioning.
- Scope creep: challenge, compendium and 100% goals can turn a regional ride into a whole-game task.
- Casual detours: random encounters, hunting and exploration are enjoyable but make the clock less predictable.
- Condition-dependent objectives: some tasks may require a particular setup or a later return, so forcing them immediately creates backtracking.
How to recover when your route overruns
If you pass the lower estimate with large portions untouched, stop adding new objectives. Open your notes, identify the remaining sectors and choose either a fast-travel cleanup or a fresh loop that visits only uncompleted locations. If a hunt repeatedly fails, leave it marked as pending and finish static collectibles first; returning with a clear route is more efficient than repeatedly riding to the same territory without changing your approach.
If the in-game Total Completion percentage barely changes, check your scope rather than assuming the region is bugged. The screen measures five game-wide categories, and many entries are located outside New Austin. A complete regional map can therefore coexist with unfinished missions, compendium records, challenges or miscellaneous requirements elsewhere.
Bottom line for planning
For a normal epilogue playthrough, set aside an evening for a focused New Austin sweep and a larger block—or two sessions—for a methodical cleanup. The 4–8-hour and 8–15-hour bands are transparent planning estimates shaped by travel, checklist density and hunting difficulty, not official averages. New Austin can contribute important pieces of 100% completion, but the formal goal remains a whole-game undertaking.
