There is no single number of years that applies to every Samsung Galaxy phone. A phone may remain physically usable after its battery runtime declines or its security updates end. To judge your own Galaxy, consider those three timelines separately: hardware condition, battery health, and software support for your exact model.
What determines how long a Galaxy phone lasts?
Physical lifespan depends on the phone’s condition and whether its performance and apps still meet your needs. Battery runtime usually declines with continued use, while security support follows a model-specific schedule. These timelines do not necessarily end at the same time.

There is no authoritative universal average for the number of years a Galaxy phone remains physically usable. The University of Twente’s 2025 study, “Develop to Last: The Impact of Operating Systems on Smartphone Longevity”, says a phone’s exact lifespan is difficult to define unambiguously. For its comparison, the study treated the end of OS security support as the end of a phone’s lifespan, while noting that a device can remain in use beyond that point.
How long does a Galaxy battery last?
Samsung describes a Galaxy battery as a consumable component that naturally degrades. There is no universal number of years or battery-cycle threshold in the available guidance that determines when every Galaxy battery must be replaced. Use the phone’s symptoms and battery diagnostic rather than a fixed age.

Signs the battery may need attention
- The battery drains unusually quickly after charging.
- The phone shuts down unexpectedly, including in cold conditions if the battery is already deteriorated.
- Battery life has dropped drastically or unexpected shutdowns happen frequently.
Check battery status and get help
- Open the Samsung Members app and go to Support → Get Started/Phone diagnostics → Battery status. Menu labels can vary by model and software version.
- If Samsung Members reports a battery degradation alert, or the symptoms persist, arrange a professional inspection through Samsung support or a service center.
- Ask whether replacement is appropriate and whether it is covered under the warranty or would be a paid service; terms depend on the applicable warranty and service conditions.
Samsung’s guidance on checking your Galaxy phone’s battery and battery drain and unexpected shutdowns also notes that use patterns and storage environment affect battery performance. Settings or charging accessories should not be assumed to restore a worn battery.
How long does Samsung provide security updates?
Security support is determined by the exact model, not by a single Galaxy-wide lifespan rule. Samsung’s Mobile Security page says that, as of January 2024, support can extend for up to seven years for eligible Galaxy devices. “Up to” is a maximum for selected devices, not a promise that every Galaxy phone receives seven years of updates.
Samsung groups listed models into monthly, quarterly, or biannual update schedules. The list can change, and Samsung says availability and timing may vary by model, market, and network provider; some carriers may use quarterly updates for listed devices. Check the exact model’s entry on the security page to see whether it is listed and which update cadence applies. The schedule does not establish a universal end date for all phones in a product family.
For historical context, Samsung announced in February 2022 that selected eligible devices would receive up to four generations of One UI/Android OS upgrades and up to five years of security updates. The announcement covered then-eligible models and selected upcoming devices; it is a dated policy statement, not the current promise for every Galaxy. See Samsung’s February 9, 2022 announcement for the devices and qualifications named at the time.

Yes. The end of security support does not automatically make a phone unusable or stop every app from working. However, the phone no longer receives the security updates included in that support schedule, and app compatibility can vary. Whether to continue using it depends on your needs and the risks you are willing to accept; the end of updates and physical failure are different events.
What lifespan figures do studies actually establish?
The University of Twente study’s Galaxy S7 examples illustrate why the operating system and the definition of “lifespan” matter. They are scenarios for one model, not an expected lifetime for Galaxy phones generally.
| Galaxy S7 scenario in the 2025 study | Period counted | Study’s figure |
|---|---|---|
| Android 8.0; purchased March 2016 | Purchase to the latest security release in January 2021 | 4 years and 10 months |
| /e/OS; final security update projected for August 2025 | OS availability in October 2019 to the projected final update | 5 years and 10 months |
| /e/OS total-device scenario | Galaxy S7 purchase in March 2016 to projected final security update in August 2025 | 9 years and 5 months |
The study’s periods reflect its specific S7 and OS assumptions. They should not be read as a typical Galaxy lifespan or a promise that another model, operating system, or region will have the same support.

Should you keep, repair, or replace your Galaxy?
Make the decision for your particular phone rather than relying on a general age estimate. Compare these factors:
- Battery condition: Review Samsung Members diagnostics and consider whether a service inspection or replacement could restore useful runtime.
- Security support: Check your exact model on Samsung’s security page and note its listed update cadence.
- Everyday usefulness: Decide whether performance and app compatibility still meet your needs.
- Repair practicality: Check the model- and region-specific repair cost, warranty eligibility, and parts or service availability before deciding. These vary and cannot be determined without your device details.
A battery problem does not by itself mean the whole phone has reached the end of its useful life. Likewise, continued physical operation does not mean security support is still active.
