The exact model, its launch cohort, and sometimes your country or mobile network determine how long it receives updates. Keep two promises separate: major operating-system (OS) upgrades add new platform features, while security updates patch known vulnerabilities. A phone may stop getting new OS versions yet continue receiving security fixes for an older version.
As of October 2026, Google documents seven years of OS and security updates for Pixel 8 and later, five years for listed Pixel 6/7-era phones and Pixel Fold, and no further Android or security updates for Pixel 5a and earlier. Samsung advertises security support of up to seven years for eligible Galaxy models, with schedules that vary. Apple publishes model-specific iOS compatibility and security releases rather than one fixed number of years for every iPhone.

What “software support” includes
Major OS upgrades
An OS upgrade changes the phone’s underlying platform, such as moving from one Android version to the next or installing a new iOS release. It can add system features, alter privacy controls, change developer APIs, and eventually determine which new apps can be installed. A manufacturer’s promise may count a specific number of OS generations rather than a number of calendar years.

Security updates fix vulnerabilities in the operating system, drivers, browser components, and other bundled software. They can arrive monthly, quarterly, or less often. Security support can continue after major OS upgrades stop, so “the phone no longer gets the latest Android or iOS” does not automatically mean “no security fixes are available.”

Feature drops and maintenance releases
Some manufacturers issue feature drops, bug fixes, or stability updates between major releases. Google’s Pixel 8 announcement includes ongoing Feature Drops in its seven-year software-support commitment, but a feature drop is not the same thing as a new Android generation. Hardware-parts availability is also a separate promise from software support.
Current update commitments from Google, Samsung and Apple
The table shows what the checked official policies establish. It does not turn a flagship promise into a guarantee for every device sold by the same brand.
| Manufacturer and scope | OS-upgrade commitment | Security-update commitment | How the clock or eligibility works |
|---|---|---|---|
| Google Pixel 8 and later | Seven years of OS updates | Seven years of security updates | Counted from first availability on the Google Store in the United States; rollout can vary by operator and device. |
| Google Pixel 6/7-era models listed by Google, including Pixel Fold | Five years | Five years | Also counted from first US Google Store availability. |
| Google Pixel 5a and earlier listed devices | No further Android version updates | No further security updates | Google’s current support page identifies these devices as out of support. |
| Samsung Galaxy (eligible models) | Not stated as a universal seven-year OS promise | Up to seven years | Samsung separates monthly, quarterly and biannual schedules; timing and eligibility vary by model, market and network provider. |
| Apple iPhone | No universal fixed-year guarantee stated in the checked Apple sources | Published release by release, including older iOS branches when Apple deems necessary | Use Apple’s live security-release list and iOS compatibility page for the exact model. |
Google Pixel: seven years for newer generations, five for older ones
Pixel 8 and newer
Google’s current Pixel support page says Pixel 8 and later phones receive seven years of OS and security updates. The period starts on the date that model first became available on the Google Store in the United States, not on the day an individual owner bought it. Google’s October 4, 2023 Pixel 8 announcement described the commitment as seven years of software support, including the latest Android operating system, security updates and ongoing Feature Drops (Google announcement).

The same live help page gives five years of OS and security updates to the listed Pixel 6/7-era phones and Pixel Fold. Check the model list rather than assuming every device released around those phones has identical coverage. The five-year period uses the same first-US-Google-Store-availability starting point (Google Pixel support schedule).

Older Pixels
Google lists Pixel 5a and earlier devices as no longer receiving Android version or security updates. If your phone is in that group, a newer Android version will not arrive through normal support, and the security patch level will not be brought current by Google.
Why a promised date may not match your phone’s screen
Pixel updates roll out gradually. Google says delivery can depend on the operator and the device, so two owners of the same model may see an update on different days. A later installation date does not necessarily shorten the policy period; the support clock still uses the model’s first US Google Store availability.
Samsung Galaxy: “up to seven years” is model-specific
What Samsung’s current page actually says
Samsung’s Mobile Security page states that, as of January 2024, it extended security-update support for Galaxy devices by up to seven years. The page groups current models into monthly and quarterly security-update schedules and identifies some devices that receive firmware updates twice a year (Samsung Mobile Security).
“Up to” is important: it does not promise seven years for every Galaxy phone, nor does it promise seven years of major Android or One UI upgrades. Samsung’s footnotes say availability and timing vary by market, network provider and model, and that the lists can be reviewed or changed. Look up the exact model on the live scope page before treating the maximum as your phone’s entitlement.

Why older Samsung statements can mislead
Samsung announced in February 2022 that selected devices could receive up to four generations of Android/One UI upgrades and up to five years of security updates, while other devices received fewer generations (2022 Samsung announcement). That announcement describes a historical product cohort. It should not replace the current model list, especially when Samsung has changed policies for newer launches.
Apple iPhone: verify releases and compatibility instead of guessing a year count
No single number published for every iPhone
Apple’s checked official pages do not state one fixed support duration that applies to all iPhones. Apple maintains a security-release index showing each release date and the devices covered, and a separate compatibility guide showing which models can install the current iOS (Apple security releases; iOS compatibility guide). Those live lists answer a specific model’s question more reliably than a brand-wide estimate.
Older iOS branches can still receive protection
Apple’s April 2, 2026 guidance says it released updates for iOS 15 and iOS 16 on March 11, 2026 to protect older devices that could not move to the newest iOS (Apple security advisory). This is a concrete example of security maintenance continuing on an older OS branch. It does not establish a guaranteed number of years for every iPhone.
Apple says, “Keeping your software up to date is the single most important thing you can do to maintain the security of your Apple products.” In that advisory, the warning concerned web-based attacks targeting out-of-date iOS versions, and Apple said devices with the described updates were not at risk from those reported attacks. The statement is about those attacks, not a promise that updates remove every security risk.

How the support clock is calculated
- Identify the manufacturer’s starting event. Google uses first availability on the US Google Store for the Pixel periods above. Your purchase date is not the default starting point.
- Confirm the exact model and generation. Names such as “Galaxy S” or “iPhone” cover many cohorts with different policies. Record the model number if the settings page shows one.
- Separate OS and security terms. A listing that says “five years of updates” is incomplete unless it specifies whether that means OS upgrades, security patches, or both.
- Check regional and carrier qualifications. Samsung explicitly warns that market and network-provider conditions affect timing and availability. Google also notes operator and device variation.
- Use the current eligibility page. Policies and model lists can change, so an archived launch statement is evidence of the promise made to that cohort, not a substitute for the live support scope.
How to check whether your current phone is still supported
Any Android phone
- Open Settings and search for About phone, Device information, or a similarly named page.
- Write down the exact model name, model number, Android version and security-update level.
- Open the manufacturer’s official security or software-support page and search for that exact model.
- Compare the listed end date or support cohort with the security patch date shown on the phone.
- Install any pending update, then restart and recheck the patch level. If no update appears, the absence may reflect a staged rollout, operator approval, regional eligibility, or an expired support period.
Google Pixel
On Pixel, the Android version and security-update level are visible in Settings, and Google provides an update check from the same software-update area. Match your model to Google’s support schedule, then account for the first-US-availability date and the gradual rollout caveat (Google Pixel support schedule).
Samsung Galaxy
Use Settings → About phone to capture the model and software information, then compare it with Samsung’s monthly, quarterly or biannual scope list. If the model is listed but an update is late, check whether your carrier or region is named as a timing variable before assuming support has ended (Samsung Mobile Security).
iPhone
- Open Settings → General → About and note the model name and iOS version.
- Open Settings → General → Software Update to see whether Apple offers a newer release for that phone.
- Check Apple’s iOS compatibility guide for major-version eligibility.
- Check Apple’s security-release index for the latest release that lists your model, including releases for older iOS branches.
What to compare before buying a replacement phone
Update longevity should be evaluated as a contract for one model, not as a reputation score for an entire brand. Put these details side by side:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches| Question | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| What is the exact model and launch cohort? | Two phones with similar names can have different end dates. |
| When does the clock start? | A first-sale or first-availability date can precede your purchase by months or years. |
| How many OS upgrades are promised? | Security patches alone do not guarantee access to future Android or iOS features. |
| How long are security patches promised? | This is the period in which the manufacturer commits to fixing newly identified vulnerabilities. |
| How often are patches scheduled? | Monthly, quarterly and biannual schedules produce different waiting times. |
| Are there carrier or regional exceptions? | Availability can differ even when the model is nominally eligible. |
| Is the statement current? | Live support pages can supersede launch-era announcements or add eligible models. |
For a search such as “smartphones with long software support,” verify the manufacturer’s commitment for the exact listing rather than assuming every Pixel, Galaxy or iPhone receives the maximum period. Apple’s model-by-model release records and Google’s and Samsung’s eligibility pages are the authoritative checks for their respective devices.

What happens when support ends
After a phone leaves its manufacturer’s security-support scope, it may continue to operate and run existing apps, but newly discovered flaws in its operating system or bundled components are no longer covered by that manufacturer’s normal update commitment. App developers may eventually drop the old OS, and banking or workplace applications can impose their own minimum-version rules. These effects are separate from the phone’s ability to make calls or access the internet today.
If you must keep an unsupported phone temporarily, install every update that remains available, remove apps you no longer need, use a reputable password manager and multifactor authentication, avoid installing software from unknown sources, and move sensitive work to a supported device as soon as practical. These steps reduce exposure; they do not extend the manufacturer’s support period.
Why an update is missing and what to do
The model is eligible, but the rollout has not reached you
Google documents gradual Pixel rollouts, and both Google and Samsung note operator or regional variation. Keep the phone connected to power and Wi-Fi, check the software-update screen again later, and confirm that the model and region match the support listing.

The phone shows an old patch despite a newer OS
OS-version eligibility and security-patch eligibility are separate fields. Look for the security-update date, not only the Android or iOS version number. A phone can run a relatively recent OS while missing a later patch, or receive a security fix for an older OS branch.
The model is absent from the current list
Recheck the model number and regional variant. If the exact device is not on the manufacturer’s current scope or release page, do not infer coverage from a similar name or from another country’s listing.
An update fails to install
Free storage, charge the battery, restart the device and retry on a stable connection. If the manufacturer’s support page still lists the model but installation repeatedly fails, use the maker’s official troubleshooting or service channel; avoid unofficial firmware when security and data integrity are priorities.
Bottom line for each ecosystem
- Pixel: Pixel 8 and later have a documented seven-year OS-and-security period; listed Pixel 6/7-era phones and Pixel Fold have five years; Pixel 5a and earlier are out of Android and security support.
- Galaxy: Samsung’s ceiling is up to seven years of security support for eligible models, with schedule, market and carrier qualifications and no blanket seven-year OS-upgrade promise.
- iPhone: Apple does not publish one universal year count in the checked sources. Use the current compatibility page and security-release index for the specific model.
Because policies and model lists change, perform the model-level check immediately before buying and whenever you need to know whether a phone is still receiving security protection.
