How long do Nothing phones receive Android and security updates?

By Freedom251 Team · · 7 min read

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Short answer: Nothing’s update policy depends on the model. The official specifications cited here promise three years of Android updates for Phone (1), Phone (2), Phone (2a) Plus and Phone (3a). Security support is four years for Phone (1), Phone (2) and Phone (2a) Plus, but six years for Phone (3a). Phone (1) and Phone (2) also specify security patches every two months. Those periods are separate: a phone can stop receiving major Android-version upgrades while still receiving security patches.

The update promise is different for each Nothing model

There is no single support timeline that applies to every Nothing phone. Nothing’s official product specifications identify two main commitments in the models covered here: the number of years of major Android updates and the number of years of security updates.

Model Android updates Security updates Published detail
Phone (1) 3 years 4 years Security patches every 2 months
Phone (2) 3 years 4 years Security patches every 2 months
Phone (2a) Plus 3 years 4 years Official product specification states the four-year security period
Phone (3a) 3 years 6 years The six-year period starts when the device first became available on the market
CMF Phone 1 Not established by the cited specifications Not established by the cited specifications Nothing identifies it as ineligible for Nothing OS 5.0; that is not a final security-support date

The figures are commitments stated on the cited official pages. They should not be extended to unlisted models, regional variants or future products without checking that phone’s own specification.

Android-version updates and security updates are not the same

Major Android updates

A major Android update changes the phone’s Android version and normally brings platform changes, new system features and compatibility updates. When Nothing lists three years of Android updates, it is describing the period during which the model is promised major Android-version upgrades. It is not saying that every feature introduced by a newer Android release will appear on every device.

Security updates

Security updates address newly discovered vulnerabilities and other security defects. They can continue after a phone stops receiving the next major Nothing OS release. Conversely, eligibility for a major OS release does not by itself prove how long security support will continue.

For that reason, the two numbers must be read separately. Phone (3a), for example, is listed with three years of Android updates and six years of security patches. The six-year security commitment is not a six-year promise of major Android-version upgrades.

What each cited model is promised

Nothing Phone (1)

Phone (1)’s official specification states three years of Android updates and four years of security patches, with patches scheduled every two months. Nothing also lists Phone (1) among the devices that will not receive Nothing OS 5.0. That statement concerns the next major software release; it does not, on its own, establish the date of the final security patch.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you own a Phone (1), treat the four-year security period and the Nothing OS 5.0 status as two different facts. The absence of Nothing OS 5.0 does not automatically mean that all security support ended on the same day.

Nothing Phone (2)

Phone (2) has the same published figures as Phone (1): three years of Android updates and four years of security patches. Its specification also says security patches arrive every two months. Nothing lists Phone (2) as not receiving Nothing OS 5.0, but that major-release decision is not a published final security-update date.

Nothing Phone (2a) Plus

The Phone (2a) Plus specification states three years of Android updates and four years of security updates. The cited specification does not add the two-month cadence stated on the Phone (1) and Phone (2) pages, so that cadence should not be assumed for Phone (2a) Plus.

Nothing Phone (3a)

Phone (3a) is listed with three years of Android updates and six years of security patches. Nothing says the six-year period starts when each device first became available on the market. That starting rule matters when working out a rough support window: use the first market-availability date for the specific device and market, rather than a generic launch date for the brand.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Nothing’s series note describes the six-year period as covering security, corrective and functionality updates. The cited product passage does not provide an exact final support date for every regional version, so owners should verify the commitment for their particular market.

CMF Phone 1

The cited material does not establish a duration for CMF Phone 1’s Android or security updates. Nothing says CMF Phone 1 has reached the end of major software support and will not receive Nothing OS 5.0. That is useful for determining eligibility for that major release, but it is not evidence of a final security-patch date or a complete update schedule.

  2. Tap System.
  3. Select System updates.
  4. Check whether an update is available and follow the on-screen installation instructions.

Keep the phone connected to a reliable Wi-Fi network and sufficiently charged before installing a large system update. If an update that you expect is not shown, Nothing advises contacting support rather than assuming that the device has permanently lost support.

Why two owners may see an update at different times

Nothing says rollout timing can be indicative rather than fixed, with releases phased by region and carrier where applicable. As a result, two otherwise identical phones may not receive the same package on the same day.

  • Region: the software package may be released in stages across markets.
  • Carrier: carrier-specific testing or approval can affect availability.
  • Phased rollout: a release may expand gradually instead of appearing for every eligible device at once.
  • Model and variant: the exact regional version can determine which package is offered.

A missing update immediately after another owner receives it is therefore not conclusive evidence that your support period has ended. Check the system-update screen again later and contact Nothing support if the delay persists.

How to interpret the support period for your own phone

Start with the exact model

Identify the model shown in Settings or on the original device information. “Nothing phone” is not specific enough because the published commitments range from four to six years of security support, and some models have no duration established by the cited material.

Separate the two deadlines

Write down the Android-update commitment and the security-update commitment as separate entries. For Phone (1), Phone (2) and Phone (2a) Plus, the published figures are three years for Android updates and four years for security updates. For Phone (3a), they are three and six years respectively.

For the current list of supported countries/regions, please refer to the Product Description.

Use the correct starting point

For Phone (3a), Nothing explicitly starts the six-year security period when the device first became available on the market. The cited pages do not supply a final calendar date for each model, so do not manufacture one from the year printed in a retailer listing or from the date you personally bought the phone.

Check current release eligibility separately

A statement that a phone will not receive Nothing OS 5.0 answers a major-software question only. It does not settle whether security patches continue under an earlier OS version. Look for a separate security-support statement for the exact model and market.

Common mistakes when reading Nothing’s update policy

Assuming every Nothing phone receives six years of security updates

The six-year figure is documented for Phone (3a) in the cited material. Phone (1), Phone (2) and Phone (2a) Plus are documented with four years. Applying the Phone (3a) promise to the rest of the range produces an unsupported answer.

Treating three years of Android updates as three years of total support

Major Android upgrades and security patches have different functions and durations. A model can receive security fixes beyond its final major Android-version upgrade.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Reading “not receiving Nothing OS 5.0” as “no more security patches”

Nothing’s OS 5.0 page identifies Phone (1), Phone (2) and CMF Phone 1 as past the end of major software support for that release. The statement does not itself identify each phone’s final security-update date.

Assuming a published cadence applies to every model

Every-two-month security patches are stated on the Phone (1) and Phone (2) specifications. The cited Phone (2a) Plus and Phone (3a) specifications state total security-support periods but do not establish that same cadence. Do not turn a model-specific schedule into a range-wide guarantee.

Using the purchase date as the support start date

Buying a phone later does not necessarily restart its support clock. For Phone (3a), Nothing defines the six-year period from first market availability. Check the model’s official support terms instead of counting from your receipt.

What to do when support information is unclear

  1. Confirm the exact model and regional variant.
  2. Check Settings > System > System updates.
  3. Note the Android version and the date of the installed security patch.
  4. Compare those details with the official specification or support statement for that model.
  5. If the expected update is missing, contact Nothing support and provide the model, region, carrier and current software information.

This process distinguishes a phased rollout from an expired commitment and avoids inferring a security end date from a major-OS announcement.

What the published figures mean when choosing between models

If your priority is… Relevant published detail How to read it
Long security coverage Phone (3a): 6 years Longest security period among the cited models; starts at first market availability
Major Android upgrades All four cited Nothing models: 3 years The cited specifications do not show a longer Android-update period for Phone (3a)
A stated patch cadence Phone (1) and Phone (2): every 2 months Cadence is published for these models only in the cited pages
Current major-OS eligibility Phone (1), Phone (2) and CMF Phone 1: no Nothing OS 5.0 This describes major software support, not the final security-patch date

These comparisons are useful only when the two support categories remain separate. A longer security period does not automatically mean more Android-version upgrades, and a major OS rollout does not prove a longer security commitment.

Bottom line for owners

For the models covered by official specifications here, expect three years of Android updates. Expect four years of security updates on Phone (1), Phone (2) and Phone (2a) Plus, and six years on Phone (3a), counted from first market availability. Phone (1) and Phone (2) specify a two-month security-patch cadence. CMF Phone 1’s exact Android and security durations are not established by the cited material. Check the model-specific terms and the system-update screen, and do not use a major-OS end statement as a substitute for a security-support end date.
