One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchThere is no official number of years that every Kindle or Kobo e-reader will last. Physical life depends on battery wear, screen damage, moisture, charging habits and how heavily you use the device. Amazon and Rakuten Kobo publish security-update commitments, but both companies explicitly say those dates are not predictions of hardware failure. The clearest current difference is repairability: Kobo documents user-repair options for Libra Colour, Clara Colour and Clara BW, while the official Kindle material reviewed does not describe a comparable consumer parts program.
Use the exact model and generation—not the brand name—to estimate how much useful life remains. A reader can often continue reading locally stored books after security updates end, although store synchronization, downloads, account features or compatibility with newer services may change.

What “lasts” means for an e-reader
People usually combine three different questions when they ask how long a Kindle or Kobo lasts:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Physical lifespan: how long the screen, battery, buttons, charging port and casing remain usable.
- Software-support lifespan: how long the manufacturer promises security updates.
- Service lifespan: how long buying, downloading, synchronization and library features continue to work on an older model.
Neither company publishes a universal physical-life expectancy or a cross-brand durability test. Amazon states, “Please note that the update period is not a guarantee as to how long your device will last.” Kobo similarly says, “The table of updates is not a statement of the expected lifespan of the noted products, and the applicable warranties continue to govern.” A support deadline is therefore a planning signal, not an expiration date.

How Kindle and Kobo support clocks differ
Amazon Kindle: counted from a new purchase
Amazon’s current Kindle security policy sets a baseline of at least four years from the date the device was purchased new from Amazon as the seller, unless the model table gives a later date. The wording matters when you buy old stock, a used Kindle or a device sold by another retailer: the four-year calculation is not simply “four years after launch.” Amazon’s model-specific table can provide a later minimum date.
Kobo: counted from the last direct new sale
Rakuten Kobo’s general commitment is at least four years after the last date that model was available new directly from Kobo. That is a different starting point from Amazon’s purchase-based rule. A Kobo bought years after Kobo stopped selling it could therefore have less remaining stated support than a newly purchased model, while a Kindle’s baseline is tied to the buyer’s qualifying purchase date.
Both tables can be revised. Check the current entry for the exact model, regional edition and generation before buying.
Published model dates: examples, not failure dates
The policy tables reviewed list these minimum security-update dates:

| Device | Model or generation | Published minimum update-through date | What the date means |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kindle | 2022 release | December 31, 2028 | Amazon’s stated minimum security-update date, not an expected hardware end date |
| Kindle Paperwhite | Generation 11 (2021 release) | December 31, 2028 | Amazon’s stated minimum security-update date, not a failure guarantee |
| Kindle | Generation 10 (2019 release) | December 31, 2026 | Amazon’s stated minimum security-update date, not a failure guarantee |
| Kindle Paperwhite | Generation 10 (2018 release) | December 31, 2026 | Amazon’s stated minimum security-update date, not a failure guarantee |
| Kobo Clara BW, Clara Colour, Libra Colour, Clara 2E, Sage, Libra 2 and other named models | Models listed in Kobo’s policy table | 2028 | Kobo’s stated security-update year, not a physical-life estimate |
A device may work normally beyond these dates. Conversely, a battery or screen can fail before them. The dates are most useful when comparing two otherwise similar used devices: a model with more remaining security support generally has a longer supported-service runway.
Repairability is the strongest documented difference
Kobo models with official repair guidance
Kobo says Libra Colour, Clara Colour and Clara BW are designed to be repaired. Its guidance identifies the display, battery, motherboard and front or back cover as repairable components. Kobo writes, “By choosing to repair your eReader, you can extend the lifespan of your eReader and its components.” This is a model-specific statement; it does not establish that every Kobo eReader has replaceable parts.
Kobo directs customers to iFixit for parts and instructions. Availability can vary by country, and Kobo specifically notes regional limits including Japan. Opening the reader can compromise waterproofing, and Kobo advises checking warranty status before self-repair. Confirm the exact model number and local availability of parts before buying a tool kit or starting a repair.

What the Kindle evidence establishes
The official Kindle pages reviewed provide warranty information and safety guidance. They recommend professional battery removal or replacement for one 2026 model’s safety documentation, but they do not establish an equivalent consumer battery-and-screen parts program across Kindle models. That does not prove a Kindle cannot be repaired; it means Amazon’s published material does not offer the same clearly identified, model-specific self-repair pathway.

Battery life, screens and everyday wear
Battery capacity is usually the component that makes an otherwise functional e-reader feel old. Lithium-ion cells gradually hold less charge, and a reader who uses front lighting, wireless connectivity, audiobooks or frequent page turns may notice decline sooner than someone who reads occasionally with wireless disabled. Neither manufacturer supplies a guaranteed number of charge cycles or years for every model in the evidence available here.
E-ink panels can remain readable for many years, but a cracked panel is often the most expensive failure because the display is integrated with the front assembly. Pressure in a bag, drops, twisting the chassis and liquid intrusion are more immediate risks than ordinary page turning. Waterproof ratings, where present on a particular model, do not make a device immune to salt water, chemical exposure, impact or damage caused while the casing is open.
To maximize useful life, use a protective cover, avoid bending pressure, keep the charging port clean and dry, install offered updates while the model is supported, and store the reader partly charged rather than completely empty for long periods. These practices reduce risk but do not create a guaranteed lifespan.
Warranty is coverage, not a lifespan promise
Amazon’s overview lists a one-year limited warranty for most Kindle e-readers in the table reviewed. Listed Kindle Kids devices have a separate two-year Worry-Free Guarantee. Terms, exclusions and consumer-law rights vary by product and geography, so check the policy for the exact local model. A warranty covers qualifying defects during its term; it does not mean the reader should fail when the term ends.

Kobo’s security policy likewise says applicable warranties continue to govern. Treat warranty length, update support and repair access as separate buying criteria.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What happens after updates stop?
End of security support does not automatically disable an e-reader. A device may still open books already stored on it, retain reading progress and use some offline functions. However, unsupported software can eventually have trouble with account sign-in, store certificates, new content formats, synchronization or services that change on the provider’s side.
Kobo’s legacy guidance illustrates why a single “works” or “doesn’t work” answer is misleading. Kobo identifies the Mini, WiFi and Original as no longer supported, while also providing manual-update instructions for a separate group of older readers and describing continued reading or library options for some models. The result depends on the model and the service you need, not only on the date updates ended.

How to compare two specific readers
- Identify the exact generation. Record the model name, release generation, storage size and whether it is a cellular, Kids or regional variant.
- Check the current security table. For Kindle, apply Amazon’s purchase-date rule and the model-specific “at least through” date. For Kobo, check the last direct-new-sale basis and the listed year.
- Inspect physical condition. Look for screen blemishes, ghosting that persists after refresh, dead pixels, loose ports, swollen batteries, unresponsive buttons and signs of liquid entry.
- Price the likely repair. For Libra Colour, Clara Colour and Clara BW, check local iFixit parts and instructions, then include labor, tools and the risk of losing waterproofing. For other models, ask the manufacturer or an authorized service provider what parts and labor are actually available.
- Verify warranty and returns. Confirm the country’s terms and whether a used purchase transfers any coverage.
- Match services to your habits. If you depend on store downloads, library lending or synchronization, remaining support matters more than if you read DRM-free or locally stored books offline.
Which brand lasts longer?
The evidence does not support a brand-wide winner. A well-kept Kindle can outlast a poorly treated Kobo, and an older Kobo can remain useful after its update period ends. The meaningful comparison is between specific models in similar condition.
On documented repairability, Kobo currently has an advantage for Libra Colour, Clara Colour and Clara BW because it names repairable components and provides a parts-and-instructions route. That advantage does not automatically make repair economical, and it cannot be generalized to every Kobo. For Kindle, compare the remaining model-specific security date, warranty terms and the availability of professional service in your region.
If you are buying new, choose the model with the support horizon, features and warranty you need. If you are buying used, favor a device with a healthy battery, undamaged screen and clearly documented remaining support over a brand-level assumption about longevity.

A practical decision rule
- Choose based on support: when you need dependable store, account and library services for years.
- Choose based on repairability: when you are comfortable with self-repair and are considering one of Kobo’s three documented repairable models.
- Choose based on condition: when comparing older used readers; battery and screen condition can outweigh a small difference in published support dates.
- Choose based on offline use: when you mainly sideload or read already downloaded books and can tolerate fewer online services later.
The Bottom Line
No official evidence shows that Kindle or Kobo e-readers generally last a set number of years or that one brand universally outlasts the other. Compare the exact model’s security-support date, physical condition, warranty and repair options. Kobo’s Libra Colour, Clara Colour and Clara BW have the clearest documented repair advantage; for every other model, longevity depends largely on battery, screen, care and the services you need.
