There is no single, reliable duration for ketamine’s effects or for poor coordination and abnormal movements. The course can change with dose, route, tolerance, other substances, and the person’s medical context. Government reviews recognize incoordination, loss of coordination, nystagmus and abnormal muscle movements as acute effects, but the available evidence does not establish a universal number of minutes or hours for those symptoms.
The often-quoted estimate of “a few hours” applies narrowly to emergence delirium during recovery from ketamine injection used for anesthesia. It is not a timetable for recreational intoxication, outpatient ketamine treatment, poor coordination or involuntary movements.

What the evidence can—and cannot—say about duration
Ketamine does not have one predictable timeline that applies to every exposure. The Advisory Council on the Misuse of Drugs (ACMD) January 2026 review states that short-term clinical effects are likely to be related to the dose used, the route of administration and the tolerance that has developed in the individual. Other substances taken at the same time can modify the clinical picture.
That means two people can have different experiences after apparently similar amounts, and one person can have a different response on different occasions. A person who feels detached or sleepy may recover on a different schedule from someone who has pronounced incoordination, nystagmus or abnormal muscle movements. The sources reviewed for this question do not provide a defensible, cross-route range for how long movement problems last.

It is therefore unsafe to promise that poor coordination will resolve in a particular number of minutes or hours. The appropriate answer is conditional: symptoms may improve as the acute exposure wears off, but the timing is individual and cannot be predicted from a general ketamine label.
Which movement and eye symptoms are recognized?
Acute ketamine effects can involve balance, muscle control and eye movements. The ACMD review lists incoordination and abnormal muscle movements among short-term adverse effects. Its evidence annex includes dizziness, loss of coordination, nystagmus, slurred speech and weakness. Nystagmus is a rhythmic, involuntary movement of the eyes.
Official ketamine hydrochloride injection labeling also identifies nystagmus and spontaneous limb movements accompanied by increased muscle tone. These findings describe possible effects; they do not mean every person will experience them or that a particular movement pattern proves ketamine is the cause.
| Observed problem | What it can look like | What the evidence establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Loss of coordination or incoordination | Unsteady walking, clumsy movements or difficulty controlling limbs | Recognized acute effects in the ACMD review; no universal duration is established |
| Dizziness or weakness | Light-headedness, difficulty standing or reduced strength | Listed in the ACMD evidence annex; timing varies by exposure |
| Nystagmus | Repeated, involuntary eye movements | Reported in the ACMD annex and official injection labeling; no general timeline is supplied |
| Spontaneous limb movements with increased muscle tone | Involuntary limb motion or a stiff, tense feeling | Identified in official injection labeling; not a duration estimate for all ketamine use |
| Slurred speech or reduced consciousness | Difficulty speaking clearly, unusual drowsiness or reduced responsiveness | Listed as acute signs; severity warrants professional assessment rather than a wait-time calculation |
Why dose, route, tolerance and other substances matter
Dose
A larger exposure can produce more intense dissociation, sedation or motor impairment, but a dose alone cannot predict an individual’s recovery. Concentration, formulation, body size, health conditions and whether the amount was measured accurately can all affect the clinical picture. Do not use another person’s experience as a dosing or timing guide.

Route of administration
Injected ketamine used in a clinical setting is monitored differently from an exposure outside medical care. Other routes and formulations can have different absorption patterns. The ACMD specifically identifies route as one of the variables linked to short-term effects, so a duration quoted for an injection should not automatically be applied to another route.
Tolerance
The ACMD notes that tolerance developed by the individual is relevant. Tolerance can change the apparent intensity of some effects, but it does not make an unmonitored exposure predictable or eliminate the possibility of dangerous sedation, impaired judgment or poor coordination.
Co-ingested substances
Alcohol, sedatives, opioids, stimulants and other drugs may alter the presentation and risk. The ACMD evidence annex notes that other substances can modify ketamine’s effects. If more than one substance may have been taken, tell clinicians exactly what is known, when it was taken and approximately how much. Concealing co-ingestion can make assessment less safe.

Individual health and setting
Age, pregnancy, heart or blood-pressure problems, neurological conditions, sleep deprivation and injuries can change how symptoms appear or how seriously they must be treated. A person who is alone, walking near traffic, in water or at a height faces hazards that are separate from the drug’s pharmacology.

The “few hours” figure: what it actually means
DailyMed’s 2024 prescribing information for ketamine hydrochloride injection reports that emergence delirium—postoperative confusional states or agitation—occurred in approximately 12% of patients during the recovery period and that its duration was generally a few hours. This is a label observation for anesthesia recovery.
That statement should not be converted into “ketamine effects last a few hours.” It does not describe the duration of incoordination, nystagmus, spontaneous limb movements, recreational intoxication or every medical treatment. It also does not establish when an individual’s symptoms are safe to ignore.
In an anesthetic procedure, trained staff monitor breathing, circulation, consciousness and movement while the patient recovers. That supervised context is fundamentally different from trying to estimate a timeline at home.
How long does poor coordination last after ketamine outside anesthesia?
No dependable universal timeline has been established for this situation. Coordination may improve as acute effects diminish, but the available sources do not support a promised cutoff. A person can also remain at risk after feeling less dissociated: judgment, balance and reaction time may not return simultaneously.

Do not drive, cycle, operate machinery, climb, swim or make safety-critical decisions while coordination, vision, alertness or speech is impaired. Avoid taking more ketamine—or another substance—to alter the experience. Additional dosing can prolong or intensify impairment and makes the course harder to assess.
If someone is awake and breathing normally but unsteady, keep the environment quiet and free of hazards. Have a sober, trusted adult stay with them, help prevent falls and observe whether they become harder to wake or develop new symptoms. Do not leave an impaired person alone to “sleep it off.”
What to do when movement problems are happening now
- Stop further exposure. Do not take another dose, drink alcohol or combine medicines unless a clinician specifically instructs you to do so.
- Move to a safe position. Keep the person away from roads, stairs, balconies, water, hot surfaces and sharp objects. If they are very drowsy or vomiting, place them on their side while monitoring breathing.
- Check responsiveness and breathing. Speak calmly and see whether they can answer simple questions. Note any change in breathing, skin color, consciousness or ability to protect their airway.
- Record useful facts. Write down the suspected product, route, approximate amount, time taken and any other substances. Keep packaging available for clinicians.
- Contact professional help. Call a poison center, urgent medical service or emergency service according to the person’s condition and local guidance. Explain that ketamine may be involved and describe the movement symptoms rather than relying on a guessed duration.
- Do not use unverified “reversal” remedies. Coffee, cold showers, exercise and forced walking do not provide a validated way to end ketamine-related impairment and can increase falls or other injuries.
When ongoing or worsening movements need urgent attention
The clinical toxicology review describes acute ketamine toxicity management as predominantly supportive, with treatment directed at the specific adverse effects. It does not provide a validated duration cutoff that separates a harmless symptom from a dangerous one. Severity and trajectory matter more than a clock.

These signs can have several causes, including injury or another substance, and require assessment rather than home observation.
Best Value
Even without those emergency signs, contact a clinician promptly if coordination or involuntary movements are severe, persist, recur, or worsen instead of improving, or if the person has a significant medical condition or may have taken multiple substances. Do not wait for an internet timetable to be reached.
How clinicians evaluate a person with suspected ketamine effects
Medical staff generally begin with the immediate priorities: airway, breathing, circulation, level of consciousness, temperature, blood pressure, pulse and oxygenation. They ask what was taken, by which route, how much, when, and whether alcohol, medicines or other drugs were involved. They also look for trauma, low blood sugar, infection, neurological problems and other explanations for abnormal movement.
Because there is no validated universal duration for ketamine-related incoordination, clinicians use serial examinations rather than a fixed countdown. They may reassess speech, eye movements, strength, balance, mental status and vital signs as the person’s condition changes. Treatment is supportive and targeted to the findings; the toxicology review does not endorse a single home remedy or a guaranteed medication that makes movement symptoms end on schedule.
Acute movement symptoms are not the same as longer-term harms
The ACMD review separates short-term effects from harms associated with longer-term ketamine use. A temporary episode of poor coordination is an acute safety problem; it should not be used to predict or diagnose chronic injury. Conversely, a person should not assume that a recurring or persistent problem is merely normal intoxication.
DailyMed also reports psychiatric adverse events that can persist for days to weeks in some contexts. That warning concerns psychiatric effects and should not be generalized into a duration for movement symptoms. If symptoms continue after the expected period of acute intoxication, recur when no ketamine has been taken, or interfere with work and daily activities, arrange a clinical evaluation.
A practical way to describe the episode to a clinician
- Exact or estimated time of exposure and whether there were repeated doses
- Route and formulation, if known
- Approximate amount and the source or package information
- Alcohol, prescription medicines, supplements or other drugs taken the same day
- When dizziness, poor coordination, eye movements, stiffness, weakness or speech changes began
- Whether symptoms are improving, unchanged, recurring or worsening
- Any fall, head impact, vomiting, breathing change, chest pain or loss of consciousness
- Relevant conditions, pregnancy, allergies and regular medicines
This information helps a clinician distinguish a resolving acute effect from a complication, co-ingestion or unrelated medical problem. It is more useful than reporting only that “it has been a few hours.”
Bottom line for the duration question
Ketamine’s effects and movement problems do not have one established timeline. Dose, route, tolerance, co-ingested substances and individual health all matter. Incoordination, dizziness, nystagmus and abnormal muscle movements are recognized acute effects, but current evidence does not justify a universal minutes-or-hours promise. The “generally a few hours” statement belongs only to emergence delirium during monitored anesthesia recovery, not to movement symptoms in every setting. Treat severe, ongoing or worsening symptoms as a medical issue and seek professional help based on their severity.
