How Long Do Hard Drives Last? What 13 Years of Failure Data Shows

There is no universal age when a hard drive becomes risky. Backblaze’s October 2025 analysis found its fleet’s age-based failure-rate curve peaked at 10 years and 3 months, at a 4.25% annualized failure rate (AFR). That is a pattern in one data-center fleet—not an expiry date or a prediction for your drive. Age is a reason to protect your data, not a replacement deadline.

What Backblaze’s 13-year analysis found

Backblaze’s Drive Stats Team revisited the familiar “bathtub curve”—early failures, a quieter middle period, then rising failures near end of life—in an analysis published October 15, 2025. It found that this neat pattern does not describe its current fleet particularly well. The latest age curve was fairly even through much of the observed lifespan, then rose more steeply at the oldest ages. Backblaze’s 2025 age analysis reports these peaks:

Analysis Peak age Peak annualized failure rate
2013 analysis, as reported in 2025 About 3 years and 3 months 13.73%
2021 analysis, as reported in 2025 7 years and 9 months 14.24%
2025 analysis 10 years and 3 months 4.25%

In the 2025 analysis, drives aged zero to one year had an AFR below 1.30%. The later, lower peak is notable, but it does not prove that an individual drive will last ten years—or that every drive is safe until then. Backblaze describes its own changing fleet, not a controlled comparison that isolates age from every other factor.

What AFR means—and what it does not

AFR is an annualized rate calculated for a group of drives over a reporting period. It is useful for comparing fleet-level patterns, but it is not the probability that a particular drive will fail in the next year. The age analysis groups drives quarterly by age, and the number of drives in older groups gets smaller. With fewer drives, a small number of failures can move a group’s rate more noticeably.

Survivorship and retirement also shape the curve. Backblaze sometimes removes drives that still work as part of capacity and risk management; a drive retired in working condition does not register as a failure. The drives observed at an advanced age are therefore not a complete, identical-exposure sample of every drive originally deployed.

Why the results do not set a consumer replacement age

Backblaze takes daily snapshots of operational drives in its data centers, recording basic drive information and SMART statistics, and has published HDD and SSD failure-rate data since 2013. Its reliability and test-data page links to quarterly data. Those records are valuable, but the fleet’s operating conditions and choices are not the same as a home PC, external backup drive, or NAS.

  • To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition software required
  • This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
  • The available storage capacity may vary.
  • Model mix and technology change. The drives available to, purchased by, and qualified for the fleet changed over time.
  • Workload and environment matter. Data-center use, ventilation, temperature, and operating patterns can differ from a consumer’s setup.
  • Purchasing creates cohorts. Large purchases can put many drives of similar age into service together.
  • Retirement affects who remains. Working drives may be decommissioned, changing the population still being observed.

These factors mean age is only one part of reliability context. Backblaze’s fleet-wide annual figures should not be blended with age-specific rates or treated as a forecast for a consumer model.

What newer fleet statistics add

Backblaze reported a 1.36% AFR for 344,196 qualifying drives across 30 models in calendar year 2025, down from 1.55% in 2024. These are annual fleet figures, not age-specific probabilities. The company’s 2025 Drive Stats report explains the scope and inclusion criteria.

In its September 29, 2026 Q2 report, Backblaze reported a quarterly AFR of 1.73%, up from 1.24% in Q1 2026, and a lifetime AFR of 1.41%. The quarterly, annual, and lifetime figures cover different reporting scopes, so they should not be read as one continuous trend. Backblaze also noted that two of three models above its 6.95% outlier threshold were older models, while two had relatively small populations in which a few failures could substantially shift the rate. CTO Dan Spraggins said the drives retired that quarter had each delivered close to a decade of service at scale. That observation concerns retired fleet drives, not a promised service life for consumer HDDs. Details are in the Q2 2026 Drive Stats release.

How to decide what to do with your own drive

Do not wait for an age threshold to protect important files. Backblaze’s practical guidance is to keep regular backups, provide good ventilation and stable temperatures, avoid shocks, and monitor SMART data. Its reliability guidance supports those precautions; the fleet age curve does not establish a universal consumer replacement age.

  1. Make an independent backup. Keep another copy of important data on a separate device or backup service. A second copy matters more than trying to guess the exact year a drive might fail.
  2. Check the drive’s condition. Review its SMART status and monitoring software for warnings. Treat warnings or unusual behavior as reasons to verify the backup and investigate, not as a precise countdown.
  3. Consider its use and environment. A heavily used drive, one exposed to heat or shocks, or one supporting a critical system deserves a more cautious plan than a lightly used drive holding replaceable files.
  4. Weigh the consequence of failure. If downtime or data loss would be costly, replace or migrate the drive proactively once a reliable backup is in place. If the data is backed up and the drive shows no concerning signs, age alone does not supply a scientifically established deadline.
