How Long Do Frozen Meals Last, and How Can You Tell If They’re Still Safe?

Frozen meals kept continuously at 0°F (-18°C) or below remain safe indefinitely, but their quality gradually declines. For best quality, USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service guidance gives frozen dinners and entrées a 3-to-4-month freezer-storage guideline. That is not an expiration date or a safety deadline.

How long do frozen meals last in the freezer?

At a steady 0°F (-18°C) or below, frozen meals do not become unsafe just because they have been stored for months. USDA FSIS says, “Food stored constantly at 0 °F will always be safe.” That assurance depends on the food staying continuously frozen; it does not mean the meal will taste or feel as good over time.

USDA FSIS lists 3 to 4 months for frozen dinners and entrées as a quality guideline. FoodSafety.gov also explains that freezer time limits are for quality, not safety. Packaging, how consistently the meal stayed frozen, and its condition when frozen can affect the result; drying and prolonged storage can dull the color of cooked foods. How can you tell if a frozen meal is still safe?

Check the temperature history first

Keep the freezer at 0°F (-18°C) or below, and use an appliance thermometer to verify its temperature. If you are assessing a meal after a power outage or partial thaw, its time and temperature matter more than how it looks or smells.

Freezer burn affects quality, not safety

Freezer burn is drying caused by poor packaging or prolonged storage. It may appear as dry, grayish-brown or leathery patches. The meal may have worse flavor or texture, but freezer burn alone does not mean it is unsafe. FDA: Food and Water Safety During Power Outages and Floods.

Do not use smell or taste as a safety test

After an outage, normal appearance or odor cannot reliably establish that food is safe. Never taste a questionable meal to check it. Use the temperature and thawing guidance below instead. FDA: Food and Water Safety During Power Outages and Floods.

What to do after a freezer outage or partial thaw

Use a food thermometer if available. For perishable food, the key threshold is 40°F (4°C):

What you find What to do
The meal still has ice crystals, or measures 40°F (4°C) or below It can be safely refrozen or cooked. Refreezing may reduce quality.
The meal has been above 40°F (4°C) for two hours or more Discard it.
You cannot establish its temperature or time above 40°F Do not taste it or rely on smell or appearance to decide. Follow official outage guidance; when safety cannot be established, discard the perishable food.

A closed, full freezer generally holds a safe temperature for about 48 hours; a closed, half-full freezer for about 24 hours. These are estimates that assume the door stays closed, not guarantees for an individual appliance. Check the food for ice crystals or measure its temperature when possible. How to cook frozen meals and handle homemade leftovers

For commercially frozen meals, follow the package cooking or reheating directions. Times and methods vary by product and appliance, so one cooking time does not apply to every meal. FDA: Food and Water Safety During Power Outages and Floods.

For home-prepared leftovers, USDA FSIS advises freezing them within 3 to 4 days. This concerns when to freeze leftovers, not how long a commercially frozen dinner keeps its best quality. USDA FSIS: Leftovers and Food Safety.
