There is no standard support period for budget Android tablets. Policies vary by model: TCL says security updates are generally maintained for at least two years after a model’s first shipment, while Samsung has announced up to seven generations of software updates and up to seven years of security updates for the Galaxy Tab A11. Lenovo publishes model-by-model upgrade plans and security-maintenance end dates rather than one brand-wide term. These are examples, not a market-wide average.
What counts as a software update?
“Software updates” can mean major Android or operating-system (OS) upgrades, security patches, or both. A tablet may stop receiving new Android versions while continuing to get security patches, so compare the two commitments separately.
Support duration also does not tell you how often patches arrive. Samsung’s published security scope includes monthly, quarterly, and biannual schedules for different devices; check the current schedule for the exact tablet at Samsung Mobile Security. A policy establishes eligibility, not the day a particular region or carrier will deliver an update.
What official policies say
| Maker and example | Published support statement | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Samsung Galaxy Tab A11 | Up to seven generations of software updates and up to seven years of security updates, announced in 2025. | This pledge is specific to the A11 and comes from a regional announcement. “Up to” is not a promise of seven full years after purchase; confirm terms for the local SKU. Samsung Indonesia announcement |
| Lenovo tablets | The Android Upgrade Matrix lists OS upgrade plans and security-maintenance end dates by model. Its note says customers may obtain firmware and/or OS updates for five years after a product reaches end of production. | The five-year note concerns update availability; it is not a promise of five years of major Android upgrades or monthly patches for every tablet. Check the exact model row. Lenovo Android Upgrade Matrix |
| TCL tablets | TCL’s UK policy says security updates are generally maintained for at least two years after a model’s first shipment. Some models may receive three years or longer, subject to local rules and actual conditions. | This is a general policy, not a verified end date for every tablet. The clock begins at first shipment, not necessarily the buyer’s purchase. TCL software and security policy |
As historical context, Samsung said in 2022 that select Galaxy devices, including certain tablets, would receive up to four generations of OS upgrades and up to five years of security updates. That statement applies to selected devices, not every budget tablet or later model. Samsung’s 2022 announcement

Why the starting date matters
Two policies with the same number of years may cover different periods because their clocks start at different events. TCL’s general security policy counts from a model’s first shipment. Lenovo’s matrix includes a five-year update-availability note counted from the product reaching end of production. Amazon UK’s policy for Fire tablets instead refers to four years from a qualifying new purchase when Amazon is the seller, or a device-specific date for purchases elsewhere. Those figures are not directly comparable.
Fire tablets are an adjacent category using Fire OS; do not assume they are standard Google-certified Android tablets. Amazon says support may continue beyond its stated period, subject to technical limits. Its terms are for the UK and depend on purchase channel. Amazon UK Fire tablet security updates

How to check a tablet before buying
- Find the exact model name and model code on the manufacturer’s product or support page. Do not rely on the brand name alone.
- Look up that model in the current support policy or update matrix. For Lenovo, use the Android Upgrade Matrix; for other makers, use the model’s own support page.
- Record the promised number of major OS upgrades separately from the security-support end date or duration.
- Check when the clock starts: launch, first shipment, end of production, purchase, or a stated device-specific date.
- Check the latest listed patch date and the stated patch schedule. A long support term does not guarantee frequent patches.
- Confirm the country, Wi-Fi or cellular variant, and exact SKU. Regional terms and rollout timing can differ; a promise reported for one market should not automatically be applied to another.
Can you use a market-wide average?
No precise global average follows from the published examples above. “Budget” has no single price cutoff in these policies, and manufacturers count support from different starting points and distinguish OS upgrades from security maintenance differently. Use the exact model’s local terms rather than treating one brand example as a universal rule.
