There is no single Android update lifespan. Google, Samsung and other manufacturers set support separately for each phone family, generation, region and carrier variant. A current example is Google’s policy for Pixel 8 and later: seven years of Android OS and security updates, counted from the device’s first availability on the Google Store in the US. Samsung advertises up to seven years of security updates for eligible Galaxy devices, while an earlier Samsung policy for selected models promised up to four Android/One UI upgrades and five years of security updates.
Those figures describe particular product policies, not every Android phone. You also need to separate major Android upgrades, security patches and feature updates. The exact model’s policy and its support start date determine how long your phone remains protected.

What counts as an Android update?
Android OS upgrades
An OS upgrade is a major Android version change. Manufacturers may add their own interface and features; Samsung refers to those releases as Android and One UI upgrades. The number promised is usually expressed as generations, such as four Android/One UI upgrades, rather than as a guaranteed number of annual releases.
Security updates
Security updates patch vulnerabilities and other defects. They can continue after a phone stops receiving major Android versions, so a device may run an older Android release while still receiving security fixes. A security-support promise is therefore a different measurement from an OS-upgrade promise.

Feature updates and drops
Feature updates add functions without necessarily changing the Android version. Google describes Pixel Drops as feature enhancements delivered to supported Pixel phones. A feature drop is not an additional Android OS generation and should not be added to the OS-upgrade count.
Why Android has no universal support period
Android is an operating system used by many manufacturers. Each manufacturer chooses policies by model and generation, and the policy can differ between standard, premium, regional and carrier versions. Eligibility can also change by market. That is why a statement such as “Android phones get seven years of updates” is inaccurate: the longest published periods apply only to named or eligible devices.
Support clocks generally begin at a manufacturer-defined event, not when an individual owner pays for the phone. Google’s Pixel policy uses the date the device first became available on the Google Store in the United States. A person buying the same phone years later receives only the remainder of that policy period.

| Manufacturer and scope | OS upgrade commitment | Security commitment | How the period is qualified |
|---|---|---|---|
| Google Pixel 8 and later phones | Seven years of OS updates | Seven years of security updates | Google counts from first availability on the US Google Store; verify the exact model and regional or carrier eligibility. |
| Google Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro announcement | Seven years of software updates, including OS upgrades and regular Feature Drops | Included within the seven-year software policy | The announcement describes the product-family pledge; the current support page supplies the start-date rule. |
| Eligible Samsung Galaxy devices under the current Mobile Security policy | Not one universal number for all eligible models | Up to seven years | “Up to” applies only to eligible devices; Samsung assigns a device-specific schedule. |
| Select Samsung devices covered by the 2022 policy | Up to four generations of Android and One UI upgrades | Up to five years | This was a select-device commitment, not a promise for every Galaxy phone. |
The table shows why two numbers must be recorded when comparing phones: the OS-upgrade allowance and the security-support allowance. The larger number is not automatically the period during which the phone receives both types of update.
How to calculate the support remaining on a phone
Use the manufacturer’s start-date rule first. If a policy begins at first availability and promises seven years, the approximate end of the policy is seven calendar years after that availability date. Buying the handset later does not reset the clock.

- Find the exact model, generation and model number, including whether it is a carrier variant.
- Find the date and market used by the manufacturer to start support. For Pixel 8 and later, Google specifies first availability on the US Google Store.
- Record the separate OS-upgrade and security-support periods.
- Subtract the phone’s support start date from the current date to estimate the time already used.
- Check the manufacturer’s current policy page for exceptions, regional terms or a device-specific end date before treating the estimate as definitive.
For example, if a phone first became available in October 2024 under a seven-year policy, the policy would run roughly until October 2031. Someone purchasing it in October 2027 would have about four years of the stated period left, subject to the manufacturer’s exact date and eligibility terms.
When do security patches arrive?
The Android Open Source Project ordinarily publishes Android Security Bulletins on the first Monday of each month, unless that Monday is a holiday. That is the bulletin publication schedule, not a promise that every handset receives the patch that day.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteManufacturers test, adapt and distribute firmware for individual models. Samsung lists monthly, quarterly and biannual security-update schedules for different Galaxy devices. A phone on a quarterly schedule can receive fewer releases than a phone on a monthly schedule even while both remain officially supported.
Carrier approval, regional firmware, staged rollouts and model-specific testing can delay delivery. The date shown in the phone’s security-patch field is therefore more useful for judging your device than the date of a general Android bulletin. A delay of several days does not by itself prove that support has ended; a long gap beyond the published cadence is a reason to check the manufacturer’s schedule and carrier information.
How to check whether your phone is still supported
1. Identify the exact device
Open the phone’s Settings app and inspect About phone or the equivalent device-information screen. Record the commercial model name, model number, Android version and security-update level. Do not rely only on a name such as “Galaxy” or “Pixel,” because different generations and variants have different policies.

2. Check the installed security level
In the Android version or software-information area, note the date of the security patch. Feature additions or an unchanged Android version do not prove that security support has stopped; the patch-level date is the relevant field.
3. Match the model to the maker’s policy
Search the manufacturer’s official support information for the exact model and market. Confirm whether the policy applies to your regional or carrier version and whether the stated period begins at launch, first availability or another event.
4. Compare the promise with your phone’s history
List the major Android versions the phone has received and compare that list with the model’s OS-upgrade allowance. Separately compare the latest security-patch date with the manufacturer’s monthly, quarterly or biannual schedule.
5. Check for an available update
Use the system’s Software update screen to request the latest package. If no update appears, restart the phone, connect to a reliable Wi-Fi network and check again later. Availability can be staged, so an eligible phone may not see a release immediately. If the device is far behind the published schedule, contact the manufacturer or carrier with the model number and current patch level.
How many Android updates will a phone get?
The answer requires three separate counts:
- Promised OS generations: the number of major Android or Android/One UI upgrades in the model’s policy.
- Security years: the period during which the maker commits to security fixes, often with an eligibility condition.
- Remaining time: the portion left after subtracting the policy’s start date from today.
For a Pixel 8 or later, Google’s published policy gives seven years for both OS and security updates from first US Google Store availability. For Samsung, “up to seven years” describes security support for eligible devices, while the separate 2022 commitment for selected devices described up to four OS/One UI generations and up to five security years. You must look up the specific Galaxy model to know which policy applies.

What happens when OS upgrades end before security support?
A phone can remain on its last major Android version while still receiving security patches. In that period, applications may continue to work and the device can remain protected against newly addressed vulnerabilities, but it will not gain later Android platform functions. Some applications eventually require a newer Android version, so compatibility can decline before security support ends.
The reverse situation is not a useful assumption: a phone should not be treated as secure merely because it received a feature or interface update. Verify the security-patch level and the manufacturer’s stated security period.

| Comparison question | What to verify | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| OS-upgrade promise | Number of Android or Android/One UI generations | Shows how many major platform versions are planned. |
| Security promise | Number of years, and whether the wording says “up to” or limits eligibility | Determines how long the phone is intended to receive vulnerability fixes. |
| Start date | Launch, first availability, purchase date or another stated event | Lets you calculate the support remaining at the time of purchase. |
| Delivery cadence | Monthly, quarterly, biannual or another published schedule | Indicates how frequently patches are expected, without guaranteeing same-day delivery. |
| Scope | Exact model, storage or carrier variant, country and network | Prevents applying a premium-model promise to a different variant. |
When buying an older phone, compare the remaining support rather than the original launch promise. A model advertised with five years of security updates may have only a short period left if several years have already elapsed since first availability.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Assuming the longest headline applies to every model
Seven-year statements are scoped commitments. Read the eligible-device list or model policy instead of applying the maximum to an entire brand.

Mixing OS versions with security patches
Keep two columns in your notes: major Android/One UI upgrades and security-update coverage. They can end at different times.
Treating a bulletin date as a delivery deadline
The Android bulletin is a publication event. Your manufacturer and carrier still need to release compatible firmware for your exact device.
Counting a feature drop as an Android upgrade
Feature Drops add functions but do not necessarily change the Android version. Check the version number separately.
Ignoring regional and carrier differences
A policy verified for one market may not establish the same date or rollout for another. Include country and carrier when checking support.
What to do when support is ending
- Install every available security update before the support period closes.
- Back up photos, messages, authentication codes and other important data while the phone is still functioning normally.
- Check whether essential banking, work or identity applications require a newer Android version.
- Plan a replacement based on the next phone’s published OS and security commitments, start-date rule and remaining support.
- If an update appears missing, compare your patch level with the maker’s cadence and ask support about the exact model and carrier variant.
There is no Android-wide average support duration established by the policies above. The reliable answer for any handset comes from its manufacturer, exact model, region and support start date, with OS upgrades and security updates evaluated separately.
