Microsoft support ended on October 14, 2025. Your computer will continue to run, but a Windows 10 installation without Extended Security Updates (ESU) no longer receives Microsoft operating-system security updates. Eligible personal-use PCs enrolled in consumer ESU can receive critical and important updates through October 12, 2027. If the PC meets Windows 11 requirements, the free upgrade is the safer supported route; otherwise, ESU is a temporary bridge while you plan a replacement.
What changed on October 14, 2025
Windows 10 did not stop working on its support-end date. You can still sign in, open applications, use the internet and access files. What ended was Microsoft’s ordinary support: Windows 10 no longer receives routine security updates, feature updates or general technical assistance. Microsoft explains the date and the continuing functionality on its Windows 10 support notice.

That distinction matters because security defects continue to be discovered after an operating system reaches end of support. Without Microsoft fixes, a vulnerable Windows component can remain exploitable indefinitely. Microsoft warns that an unsupported Windows 10 PC faces greater exposure to viruses and malware, and says antivirus software alone cannot replace operating-system updates. Its end-of-support guidance states: “While antivirus software—like Microsoft Defender or third-party tools—can help, it’s not enough on its own.” See Microsoft’s explanation at End of support for Windows.

So how long is it safe in practice?
Safety depends on what the computer does, how it connects to networks and whether it receives ESU. Microsoft publishes support dates, not a guarantee that any individual PC remains risk-free for a particular number of months. Treat an unprotected Windows 10 installation as an increasing-risk system rather than one with a fixed expiration date.

| Situation | Microsoft security-update coverage | Practical interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| Windows 10, no ESU | Standard support ended October 14, 2025 | Use only while you arrange an upgrade, ESU enrollment or replacement; reduce exposure and avoid treating antivirus as a substitute for OS fixes. |
| Eligible personal-use Windows 10 22H2 enrolled in consumer ESU | Critical and important updates through October 12, 2027 | A temporary transition period, not a return to full Windows support. |
| Windows 10 PC upgraded to Windows 11 | Windows 11 servicing applies to the supported installation | The supported path when the existing hardware meets Windows 11 requirements. |
| Replacement PC with Windows 11 | Windows 11 servicing applies to the new device | Useful when existing hardware is ineligible, unreliable or no longer fits the workload. |
A lightly used computer with limited network access generally has fewer opportunities for attack than an always-connected PC used for banking, work accounts or sensitive files. That is a risk difference, not a safety guarantee. Internet-facing services, removable drives, email attachments and unpatched applications can still expose an unsupported system.
First check whether your PC can upgrade to Windows 11
Microsoft says a Windows 10 version 22H2 device that meets Windows 11 minimum hardware requirements can upgrade at no charge. Check before paying for ESU or buying hardware.
- Open Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update.
- Install all offered Windows 10 updates and restart.
- Look for the Windows 11 upgrade offer. Microsoft also provides the PC Health Check route from its support guidance to evaluate compatibility: Windows 10 support has ended.
- Before starting, back up personal files and confirm that essential applications, printers, scanners, accessibility tools and other peripherals work with Windows 11.
- Start the upgrade only after you have a recovery plan and enough free storage for the installation.
The upgrade is free only when the existing Windows 10 installation and hardware satisfy Microsoft’s requirements. If the offer is absent, use PC Health Check or Microsoft’s compatibility information to identify the blocking requirement rather than assuming that a purchase is immediately necessary.

Consumer ESU: the bridge for eligible PCs
Consumer Extended Security Updates provide critical and important Windows 10 security updates through October 12, 2027. ESU does not add new features, restore ordinary support, provide general non-security fixes or create a technical-support entitlement. Details and enrollment options are listed on Microsoft’s Windows 10 Extended Security Updates page.
Who can use consumer ESU?
Microsoft’s current consumer eligibility guidance lists Windows 10 version 22H2 Home, Professional, Pro Education and Workstations editions, with the latest Windows update installed. Enrollment requires an administrator Microsoft account that is not a child account. Consumer ESU is not intended for commercial scenarios and is not offered for kiosk-mode devices, Active Directory- or Microsoft Entra domain-joined devices, or devices enrolled in mobile-device management. A work-managed computer should be handled through the organization’s IT administrator rather than assumed to qualify.
Regional terms can differ, including in the European Economic Area. The enrollment screen on the PC and the Microsoft page for your country control what is actually available.

Enrollment routes and listed cost
| Route Microsoft lists | What it means |
|---|---|
| Sync PC settings | Enrollment at no additional charge when the device meets Microsoft’s conditions. |
| Redeem 1,000 Microsoft Rewards points | Use the listed points option if it appears for your region and account. |
| One-time purchase | $30 USD, or local-currency equivalent, plus applicable tax where required. |
Microsoft says currently enrolled eligible devices receive coverage through October 12, 2027. Because options and timing can vary by country, verify the offer shown in Windows rather than relying on a price seen elsewhere.

- Bring Windows 10 up to version 22H2 and install the latest available updates.
- Sign in with an administrator Microsoft account that meets the account rules.
- Open Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update.
- Follow the Extended Security Updates enrollment prompt if it appears.
- Choose the available route—settings sync, Rewards points or the one-time purchase—and complete the on-screen confirmation.
- Return to Windows Update and verify that enrollment is shown before relying on ESU coverage.
If no prompt appears, check the Windows edition, 22H2 status, update level and whether the device is managed or domain-joined. A missing offer can also reflect regional availability. Do not infer enrollment from the fact that Windows still starts.
Choose the least risky path for your situation
Upgrade an eligible PC
This is usually the simplest supported choice when Windows 11 compatibility is confirmed. You keep the computer and avoid ESU’s end date, but you still need to check application and peripheral compatibility. Back up first and retain installation media or recovery options in case a driver or legacy program needs attention.
Use ESU while preparing a move
ESU suits an eligible personal PC whose owner needs more time to migrate files, replace a specialized application or budget for new hardware. Set a calendar reminder well before October 12, 2027. ESU is not a reason to postpone backups or continue expanding the role of an aging machine; it is a defined transition window.
Replace an ineligible or unsuitable PC
A replacement is sensible when the hardware cannot meet Windows 11 requirements, is unreliable, lacks required security features, or cannot run essential current software. A Windows 11 laptop is one option; a desktop may be better for a fixed workspace, upgrades or accessibility equipment. Compare devices by workload, memory, storage, display, ports, mobility and accessibility needs rather than buying solely on the operating-system label.
Reduce exposure while deciding
If you must keep an un-enrolled Windows 10 PC temporarily, install every remaining application and browser update, use a standard (non-administrator) account for daily work, enable a firewall, avoid unknown downloads and attachments, and keep current offline or cloud backups. Do not use these precautions to claim that an unsupported system is safe; they only reduce some attack opportunities while you arrange a supported solution.

Back up before any upgrade or replacement
Microsoft points users to Windows Backup and OneDrive for transferring files and settings. A sync icon is not proof that every file is available for recovery, so test access to important documents from another device or the web before changing the PC.
- List the folders, browser data, passwords, photos and application files you cannot replace.
- Use Windows Backup and, where appropriate, OneDrive to copy files and settings.
- Keep a second copy on an external drive or another trusted location; disconnect that copy after it completes so ransomware cannot reach it.
- Record software licenses, email settings, printer details and any specialized workflow steps.
- After migration, open representative files and launch critical applications before wiping the old installation.
Microsoft’s transfer guidance is available through the Windows end-of-support information at microsoft.com/windows/end-of-support.
Do not confuse Windows support with Microsoft 365 support
Microsoft 365 Apps and Windows 10 have separate support statements. Microsoft says Microsoft 365 Apps support on Windows 10 ended on October 14, 2025, but the applications continue to run and receive security updates on Windows 10 through October 10, 2028 while users transition. Those application updates do not patch the Windows 10 operating system.

A working Word, Excel or Outlook installation therefore does not prove that the underlying PC is secure. See the support distinctions in Microsoft’s Windows 10 support guidance.
Common mistakes and what to do instead
- “The PC still boots, so nothing changed.” Booting confirms functionality, not ongoing security maintenance. Check Windows Update and your support path.
- “Antivirus makes it safe.” Microsoft explicitly says antivirus cannot replace operating-system security updates. Use protection layers while moving to Windows 11 or ESU, not as a permanent substitute.
- “Any Windows 10 edition qualifies for ESU.” Consumer ESU lists specific 22H2 editions and excludes several managed or commercial configurations. Verify edition, account and management status.
- “Microsoft 365 updates mean Windows 10 is supported.” App security updates through October 10, 2028 are separate from Windows 10 OS support.
- “ESU is a permanent solution.” Consumer coverage has a published end date of October 12, 2027. Plan the next migration before that date.
Bottom line for October 2026
Windows 10 can remain usable after October 14, 2025, but an un-enrolled installation has no ordinary Microsoft security-update coverage and becomes harder to justify as a primary, internet-connected computer over time. Check for the free Windows 11 upgrade first. If the PC is ineligible but meets consumer ESU rules, enroll through Windows Update and treat October 12, 2027 as a firm planning deadline. If neither path fits, back up your data and move to a Windows 11 replacement chosen for your actual workload. That sequence answers “how long” without pretending that Microsoft can guarantee a risk-free lifespan for unsupported software.
