There is no universal, evidence-based number of minutes or hours that a newborn can stay in a baby wrap. The key is to maintain a safe position and check the baby frequently. A wrap is for carrying, not sleep: if your baby dozes off, move them to a firm, flat sleep surface as soon as it is safe and practical.
Why there is no set time limit
The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) give positioning and supervision guidance, but neither sets a general maximum duration for a newborn’s wrap session. The ACCC advises against leaving a baby who has fallen asleep in a wrap for long periods, without defining a number. Don’t treat a fixed online rule in minutes or hours as official guidance.

Follow the instructions for your specific wrap, including its newborn size and weight requirements and permitted carrying positions. Take your baby out if you are concerned about the fit, breathing, or comfort.

Keep the baby’s airway clear throughout the carry
Check your newborn frequently. Keep their face visible, with the nose and mouth unobstructed by fabric or your body. Their head should stay above the fabric, their neck should be straight, and their chin should not rest on their chest. Support the back and keep the baby close enough to kiss. These checks support safer positioning; they do not replace supervision or the product’s instructions.

The AAP warns that some slings can curl an infant into a C-shape, which can make breathing harder. If the baby’s face becomes covered, their chin drops toward their chest, or their position or breathing concerns you, take them out and reposition them.
If your newborn falls asleep in the wrap
A baby wrap is not a safe sleep space. The ACCC says, “It is unsafe for your baby to sleep in a carrier, wrap or sling as it is not a safe sleeping environment.” The AAP likewise does not recommend carriers or slings for routine sleep, particularly for infants younger than four months.

- Keep checking that the baby is breathing and that their chin is off their chest while you prepare to move them.
- When it is safe and practical, transfer them to an appropriate firm, flat, non-inclined sleep surface.
- Place your baby on their back for sleep, following safe-sleep guidance from the CDC.
When to ask your baby’s clinician
Get individualized advice before using an upright carrier if your baby was born prematurely or has respiratory problems. The AAP cautions that upright positioning can make breathing harder for some infants. Some babies discharged from a neonatal intensive care unit may not yet have enough muscle strength to keep their airway open in an unsupported position. Age or weight alone cannot establish that a wrap is appropriate for your baby.
Check the wrap’s fit and condition
Choose a carrier that matches your baby’s size and follow the manufacturer’s instructions for your exact model. The AAP advises supporting the baby’s back and periodically checking the carrier for rips or tears in its seams and fasteners. A damaged wrap or a fit that prevents you from maintaining a visible, unobstructed airway is a reason not to use it.
