How LocalSend Works: Peer-to-Peer Transfers, Encryption, and Privacy Explained

LocalSend transfers files directly between nearby devices on the same local network. It does not need a LocalSend account, cloud relay, or internet connection for the transfer. The app discovers peers on your LAN, then sends your selected files or messages over an HTTPS connection whose TLS/SSL certificate is generated on each device. That design keeps data on the local network, but you still need to verify the recipient and trust the devices and network involved.

What LocalSend is

LocalSend is a free, open-source application for sharing files and messages with nearby devices. It supports photos, videos, documents, folders and plain text. The defining feature is its local-network architecture: the sender and recipient communicate across a reachable Wi-Fi or wired LAN instead of uploading content to a vendor-operated cloud service.

The project describes LocalSend as cross-platform software built around a REST API and HTTPS encryption. Because the implementation is open source, developers and security researchers can inspect the client and protocol materials rather than relying only on a closed service description.

LocalSend is therefore best understood as a peer-to-peer transfer tool with a local discovery layer. “Peer-to-peer” here means the payload moves between the participating devices on the local network. A router or access point may carry the packets, but a LocalSend cloud server is not required to relay the file.

How a LocalSend transfer works

A normal transfer follows the same sequence whether you are moving a few photos between phones or sending a folder from a computer to a tablet.

  1. Install the app. Put LocalSend on both devices using the appropriate app store or package manager. The official project lists Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, iOS and Fire OS channels.
  2. Connect both devices to a reachable local network. They normally need to be on the same Wi-Fi or LAN segment. A wired computer and a wireless phone can work together when the router allows traffic between those segments.
  3. Open LocalSend on both devices. The app uses its local communication protocol to discover nearby peers. The discovered device appears in the sender’s device list rather than being selected through an online account.
  4. Select the content. Choose one or more photos, videos, documents, folders or text messages in the sending interface.
  5. Choose the recipient. Tap or click the discovered device. Confirm the device name carefully, especially in a busy network where several people may be running LocalSend.
  6. Accept the request on the receiving device. The recipient can approve or reject the incoming transfer. Acceptance is an important trust decision; encryption does not make an unknown sender safe.
  7. Transfer the payload over HTTPS. The file data travels directly across the local network. LocalSend says each device generates its TLS/SSL certificate on the fly, creating an encrypted HTTPS connection for that session.
  8. Save or open the result. The receiving app writes the content to its configured destination or presents the platform’s normal save/open choice. The exact folder and permission behavior can vary by operating system.

No internet route is needed for these steps. Internet access may still be present on the network, but LocalSend does not depend on it to carry the local payload.

Is LocalSend really peer to peer?

For the file path, yes. The sender establishes communication with the selected recipient on the local network, and the payload is sent device to device over HTTPS. There is no required LocalSend account, sign-in session or cloud upload in the basic workflow.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This differs from a cloud-drive workflow, where the sender uploads a file to a remote service and the recipient downloads another copy. It also differs from a messaging service that stores attachments on internet servers before delivery. LocalSend’s approach can be faster for large files on a strong LAN and avoids putting the content on a third-party storage system.

Peer to peer does not mean the devices communicate without any network equipment. A Wi-Fi access point, router or Ethernet switch can still forward the packets. It means the application does not require an intermediary service to receive, store and forward the file.

Does LocalSend use the internet?

LocalSend can complete a transfer without internet connectivity. “Works offline” means the local network is sufficient; it does not mean the devices need no connectivity at all. Wi-Fi radios, Ethernet links and a functioning local network are still required.

Both devices must be able to reach one another. A guest network, enterprise VLAN policy or router setting called client isolation can deliberately block device-to-device traffic even when both devices show the same Wi-Fi name. In that situation LocalSend may not discover the other device, or discovery may succeed while the connection itself fails.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you are testing offline, keep the devices associated with the same local access point or wired network and make sure the network permits local clients to communicate. You do not need to create a LocalSend account or enable a cloud service.

How LocalSend encryption works

The project’s README states that all data is sent securely over HTTPS and that the TLS/SSL certificate is generated on the fly on each device. HTTPS encrypts the connection while the transfer is in progress, helping prevent someone who can observe the local traffic from reading the file contents directly.

The official site also describes the design as end-to-end encryption and says that only the sender and recipient can access files. That is the product’s stated protection model: the intended endpoints handle the content, while the transfer is encrypted in transit between them.

Dynamic certificates are part of the connection setup. They allow each device to create the credentials needed for its HTTPS listener without relying on a central certificate authority. This is convenient for ad-hoc local sharing, but it does not replace user verification. Before accepting a request, confirm the displayed device and the person who controls it.

What HTTPS protects

  • It encrypts the payload while it crosses the local network.
  • It reduces the value of passive packet capture by someone monitoring Wi-Fi or Ethernet traffic.
  • It keeps the transfer from requiring a LocalSend-operated relay that could store a copy.

What HTTPS does not protect

  • A phone or computer that is already compromised can read a file before encryption or after decryption.
  • A recipient you approve can save, copy or forward the content.
  • Malware, an unlocked device or an account with excessive operating-system permissions can expose the received file.
  • Encryption does not fix a network that blocks the two devices from reaching each other.

What LocalSend knows about you and your files

The basic local workflow requires no account or login. Files are not uploaded to a LocalSend cloud relay; they remain on the local network during the transfer. This removes the need to maintain a vendor-hosted copy for recipients to download later.

Open-source code provides public visibility into the application and protocol materials. It does not guarantee that every installation is secure, nor does it protect an endpoint that has been modified or infected. Keep the operating system and LocalSend package current through the app store or package manager you use.

LocalSend’s privacy advantage is therefore specific: the transfer path avoids a required internet server and account. It is not a promise that no information is ever visible on the devices, the local router or the surrounding network. Device names, connection metadata and the saved copy can still be visible to the people and systems that control those endpoints.

Supported platforms and installation choices

The official download matrix lists the following operating-system channels:

Platform Distribution channel identified by the project
Windows Official download channel
macOS Official download channel
Linux Package-manager or official distribution channel
Android App-store channel
iOS App-store channel
Fire OS App-store channel

The project recommends using the relevant app store or package manager because LocalSend does not have an automatic update mechanism. Updating through the platform’s normal channel makes it easier to receive fixes and keep both endpoints on a supported build.

Why LocalSend cannot see another device

When a peer is missing from the device list, start with network reachability rather than the file itself. Work through these checks in order:

  1. Confirm the network. Check that both devices are connected to the same home Wi-Fi or LAN and are not split between a guest SSID and the main network.
  2. Check isolation settings. Guest Wi-Fi and client-isolation features intentionally prevent clients from contacting one another. Disable that isolation for a trusted network or move both devices to a segment that permits local traffic.
  3. Allow local-network access. On macOS and iOS, the project troubleshooting guidance specifically recommends enabling Local Network permission when a device is not visible. Open the operating system’s privacy or app-permission settings, locate LocalSend and allow local-network access, then restart the app.
  4. Keep both apps open. Bring LocalSend to the foreground on each device while testing discovery. Mobile power-saving restrictions can suspend network activity when an app is inactive.
  5. Verify firewall rules. A desktop firewall can block LocalSend’s local listener or discovery traffic. Allow the app on the private or trusted network profile rather than disabling the firewall globally.
  6. Retry after reconnecting. Disconnect and reconnect one device to Wi-Fi, reopen LocalSend and wait for the peer list to refresh.

If discovery works but the transfer fails, the problem is more likely a firewall rule, a network policy or a receiver-side permission than an internet outage. LocalSend’s architecture still requires a direct path between the endpoints.

Where received files go

The destination is controlled by the receiving device and its operating-system permissions. Before sending sensitive material, check the receiver’s LocalSend settings and confirm where incoming files will be saved. On some platforms the app can hand the content to a standard document or media picker; on others it uses an app-specific directory.

This local control is useful for privacy and organization, but it also means the sender cannot assume a universal path such as a desktop Downloads folder. Ask the recipient to verify the save location and available storage before sending a large folder or video.

LocalSend compared with other transfer approaches

When deciding whether LocalSend fits a particular job, compare tools using six practical questions:

  • Network path: Does the payload move directly over a local LAN, or through an internet service?
  • Account and connectivity: Can the transfer start without registration and without internet access?
  • Encryption model: Is the connection encrypted, and which endpoints can decrypt the content?
  • Operating-system coverage: Are the sender and recipient platforms supported?
  • Discovery and permissions: Will local-network permissions or network isolation prevent the devices from finding each other?
  • Storage control: Can the recipient choose or verify where the received files are written?

LocalSend is a strong fit when two nearby devices can share a trusted LAN and you want to avoid a mandatory cloud copy. A cloud drive may be more appropriate when the recipient is remote or needs an asynchronous download. A messaging tool may be more convenient when the conversation and attachment history matter more than keeping the transfer entirely local. Those alternatives change the network path and trust model, so treat their privacy properties as different rather than interchangeable.

Safe-use checklist

  • Use a network you trust, not an unknown public hotspot.
  • Confirm the displayed recipient before selecting Send.
  • Accept incoming requests only from a person or device you recognize.
  • Check the destination folder and delete unnecessary copies after the transfer.
  • Keep both operating systems and the LocalSend installation updated through their normal distribution channels.
  • Remember that encryption in transit cannot protect a compromised sender, recipient or saved file.

The practical answer

LocalSend works by discovering nearby peers on a reachable local network and opening an HTTPS connection directly between the selected devices. The files or messages are encrypted in transit, with TLS/SSL certificates generated on the devices, and the basic workflow needs no account, cloud relay or internet connection. Its privacy benefit comes from keeping the payload local and avoiding mandatory third-party storage. Its limits are equally important: both devices must be allowed to communicate, local-network permissions must be enabled, and you remain responsible for trusting the recipient, the endpoints and the network.
