Direct lithium extraction (DLE) from geothermal brine is a coupled heat-and-minerals process. Wells bring hot, lithium-bearing fluid from deep rock to the surface; a geothermal plant can use its heat for electricity, then a treatment circuit removes interfering minerals, selectively captures dissolved lithium, converts it into a saleable compound such as lithium carbonate or lithium hydroxide, and returns the remaining brine to the reservoir. The details vary by brine chemistry and technology, and pilot success does not by itself prove long-term commercial operation.
Where the lithium is—and what “geothermal brine” means
At California’s Salton Sea Known Geothermal Resource Area, the lithium of interest is not dissolved in the lake’s surface water. It is dissolved in hot geothermal reservoir fluid moving through bedrock roughly a mile below ground, according to the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE). Wells bring that fluid to the surface, where its heat and dissolved minerals can be handled in separate process stages. DOE’s geothermal FAQ describes the resource and the proposed extraction sequence.

“Brine” in this context means the mineral-rich geothermal fluid. Its composition includes lithium plus salts and other dissolved constituents such as silica, iron and calcium. Those accompanying minerals can foul equipment, consume reagents or compete with lithium for capture sites, so a plant normally conditions the fluid before attempting selective recovery.
The geothermal-brine lithium process, step by step
1. Pump hot reservoir fluid to the surface
Production wells lift geothermal brine from the deep reservoir. The lithium is already in solution; the operation does not crush ore or evaporate a surface lake. Flow rate, temperature, pressure and chemistry depend on the particular reservoir and well field.

2. Remove and use the heat
A geothermal configuration can extract energy before the lithium circuit. A California Energy Commission (CEC) description shows lithium-rich hot fluid being pumped up, cooled through a heat-extraction system that drives a turbine, and then sent to lithium recovery. Using the heat first allows one fluid stream to provide geothermal electricity and a mineral feedstock. The CEC pilot overview describes this integrated concept.
Cooling is not merely an energy step. Temperature affects mineral precipitation, viscosity, reaction rates and the performance of sorbents or resins. The extraction circuit therefore has to be designed around the temperature and pressure at which the selected capture material works reliably.
3. Condition the brine and remove interfering minerals
Pretreatment is chemistry-specific rather than a universal recipe. DOE gives an example in which limestone is added so silica and iron react and form solids that can settle out. A separate California demonstration notice describes calcium hydroxide pretreatment before a resin-based extraction step. Both are valid examples of the broader objective—remove substances that would block, damage or compete with the lithium-capture stage—not a single mandatory flowsheet. The California environmental notice documents that pilot configuration.

|---|---|---|
| Limestone addition | React with silica and iron to create solids that can settle before lithium capture. | Process example in the DOE geothermal FAQ. |
| Calcium hydroxide addition | Condition a geothermal-brine side stream before contact with lithium-selective resin beads. | Configuration described in the 2020 California demonstration notice. |
Actual plants may use additional filtration, clarification or polishing. The correct sequence is determined by the brine’s measured chemistry and the tolerance of the chosen capture material.

4. Capture lithium selectively
DLE is a family of processes, not one standardized machine. DOE’s example circuit can include an absorbent, electrochemical treatment, electrodialysis, and a membrane or filter. In an adsorption design, aluminum- or titanium-oxide beads bind lithium from the conditioned brine. The beads are then washed or regenerated so the lithium is released into a smaller, more concentrated solution and the beads can be prepared for reuse.
Another design uses ion-exchange resin beads. The California demonstration notice describes a side stream passing through lithium-selective resin after calcium-hydroxide pretreatment, with the resulting streams returned to the existing brine-processing system. Resin and adsorbent systems can look similar from the outside—brine contacts a solid, lithium is released during regeneration—but their chemistry, cycle time, selectivity and durability differ.
| Capture approach | How lithium is recovered | Questions an operator must answer |
|---|---|---|
| Adsorption with oxide beads | Lithium binds to aluminum- or titanium-oxide surfaces, then is washed off during regeneration. | How selective is the surface in this brine, how many cycles can the beads survive, and how much wash solution is required? |
| Ion-exchange resin | Lithium exchanges with ions on resin sites and is released in a regeneration step. | How do calcium, magnesium, iron and other ions affect capacity, fouling and resin life? |
| Electrochemical, electrodialysis, membrane or hybrid circuits | An electric field, ion-selective transport or a combination of unit operations concentrates lithium for downstream processing. | What electricity, membrane area, pretreatment and maintenance are required at the site’s salinity and temperature? |
These categories should not be ranked as universally superior. Performance depends on the specific brine, pretreatment, regeneration chemistry, energy supply and operating duration.
5. Concentrate and convert the lithium stream
After selective capture, the lithium-bearing solution is separated from the capture media and concentrated or purified. Downstream chemical steps convert it into a product specification. The 2024 CEC pilot report states that its skid directly produced lithium carbonate from synthetic brine. Other projects target different products; DOE’s ATLiS project description is aimed at lithium hydroxide production. Product choice affects purification requirements, reagents, crystallization or causticization equipment, and the quality tests needed before shipment.

6. Return the remaining brine
Once lithium and separated solids have been removed, the remaining geothermal fluid is routed back through the geothermal system. DOE describes reinjection into the reservoir. The 2020 California notice says post-extraction streams from its test were returned to the facility’s existing brine-processing system. Reinjection helps maintain reservoir pressure and keeps the process tied to a closed geothermal-fluid cycle, but it does not mean every environmental question is automatically resolved; composition, scaling, corrosion and monitoring still matter.
What has actually been demonstrated?
Evidence comes from different development stages, and those stages should not be conflated.
| Stage or project | What the public record shows | What it does not prove |
|---|---|---|
| CEC pilot skid (2024) | Validation of a DLE process with synthetic brine and direct production of lithium carbonate. The report identifies sorbent lifetime as a significant operating-cost issue. | It is not proof of long-duration operation on real geothermal brine or sustained commercial production. |
| California demonstration notice (2020) | A side-stream setup using calcium-hydroxide pretreatment and lithium-selective resin beads, with post-extraction streams sent back to the existing processing system. | The notice does not establish long-run commercial performance, production volume or economics. |
| DOE ATLiS project (2025 announcement) | A proposed Imperial County facility designed to recover lithium from geothermal brine and produce lithium hydroxide. | DOE described the financing as a conditional commitment subject to technical, legal, environmental and financial conditions; the announcement does not establish that the facility is operating. |
The CEC pilot report recommends extended operation at an actual geothermal site to evaluate materials and components. That recommendation is important because synthetic brine can reproduce selected chemical conditions without reproducing every temperature, pressure, impurity, flow-cycle and maintenance challenge of a producing reservoir. Read the CEC final project report for the stated pilot results and remaining work.

Water use: a promising comparison with an important qualification
A DOE lithium page, updated September 28, 2026, reports that a DOE-funded Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory resource assessment found DLE requires 99% less water per ton of lithium than other lithium-mining processes. That is an agency-reported comparison from the assessment, not a universal measured rate for every geothermal-DLE plant. DOE’s lithium overview provides the figure.

DOE’s geothermal FAQ separately says commercial-scale DLE water consumption is currently difficult to estimate because process designs and operating data are insufficient. Demonstration facilities need transparent, ongoing reporting before the water implications of large plants can be pinned down. Water used for pretreatment, washing or regeneration, cooling, dust control and treatment of residual streams can vary substantially with the technology and site.
For context, DOE reports that geothermal power plants in the Salton Sea region use about 16 acre-feet of water per year per megawatt of capacity. The agency says those facilities do not use water from the Salton Sea itself and do not affect the lake’s level through their operations. This figure describes geothermal power-plant water use; it is not a complete commercial-DLE water-use estimate.

Selectivity and competing ions
Lithium is usually present alongside much larger amounts of other dissolved salts. A capture medium must take up lithium without losing capacity to calcium, magnesium, iron or other ions. Pretreatment lowers that burden, but every added reaction creates solids, reagent demand and handling requirements.

Geothermal fluids can precipitate minerals as pressure and temperature change. Deposits can plug pipes, coat heat exchangers or reduce contact between brine and capture media. Corrosive conditions can shorten the life of pumps, valves, membranes and vessels. Field pilots are valuable partly because they expose these materials issues under real operating conditions.
Best Value
Sorbent and resin replacement
The CEC report specifically identifies sorbent lifetime as a significant operating cost and calls for work to increase durability. A process that recovers lithium efficiently in a short test may still be uneconomic if the beads or resin must be replaced frequently, require large wash volumes or lose selectivity after repeated cycles.
Energy and integration
Using geothermal heat for electricity can offset some process energy, but pumps, regeneration, electrodialysis, membranes, solids handling and product conversion still consume power or heat. The net benefit depends on the reservoir, plant design and operating schedule rather than on the presence of lithium alone.
How to evaluate a geothermal-lithium claim
- Identify the feed. Confirm that the project uses deep geothermal reservoir brine, not surface water from the Salton Sea.
- Name the capture mechanism. Look for a specific adsorbent, ion-exchange resin, electrochemical, membrane or hybrid process rather than treating “DLE” as a technology specification.
- Check the test fluid. Distinguish synthetic brine, laboratory samples, a field side stream and continuous operation on production brine.
- Look for duration and cycling data. Ask how many capture-regeneration cycles were completed, how capacity changed, and what replacement rate was observed.
- Separate product claims from recovery claims. Producing a small amount of lithium carbonate or hydroxide is different from meeting a commercial product specification continuously.
- Verify project status. A proposed facility or conditional financing announcement is not evidence that a plant is operating.
- Read the water accounting. Determine whether a reported number covers only the geothermal power plant, the DLE circuit, or the full integrated facility.
- Check reinjection and monitoring plans. Confirm where post-extraction streams go and how pressure, chemistry, scaling and possible releases will be monitored.
The practical takeaway
Geothermal-brine lithium extraction combines two linked operations: use the underground fluid’s heat, then selectively remove lithium from the cooled brine before reinjection. Pretreatment protects the capture step; adsorbents, resins, electrochemical systems and membranes provide different routes to selectivity; downstream chemistry determines whether the product is lithium carbonate, lithium hydroxide or another compound. Current public evidence includes pilot validation with synthetic brine and field-demonstration configurations, while longer-duration operation on actual geothermal brine, material durability and commercial water accounting remain decisive tests for scale-up.
