How Liquid Cooling Works in High-Power GPUs

Liquid cooling removes heat from a high-power GPU by pressing a liquid-cooled cold plate against the processor package. Heat crosses the thermal interface into the plate, the moving coolant carries it out of the server, and a coolant distribution unit (CDU) transfers that heat to a facility water loop or another heat-rejection system. The facility ultimately releases the heat outdoors or reuses it; the liquid loop does not make heat disappear.

Most data-center GPU systems use direct-to-chip cooling: coolant flows through passages inside a plate attached to the GPU. It normally does not wash over exposed electronics. Fans and air cooling often remain necessary for networking, storage, memory, power components, and the heat exchanger itself.

The heat path, from silicon to the outside air

A high-power GPU turns electrical power into computation and heat. Liquid cooling creates a controlled route for that heat to leave the package while avoiding the thermal limits and airflow volume that an all-air design would require.

  1. The GPU generates heat. Transistors, memory and power-delivery circuitry produce heat while the accelerator operates. A thermal interface material couples the GPU package to the cold plate.
  2. The cold plate absorbs the heat. The plate is a heat exchanger mounted directly to the processor package. Its internal channels expose a large wetted area to the coolant. Technical descriptions often call these passages microchannels; particles or chemical deposits can obstruct them.
  3. Coolant leaves the server warmer. A pump maintains flow through the plate. In a rack-scale installation, hoses and manifolds collect the warmed coolant from each server or compute tray.
  4. The rack loop reaches a CDU or heat exchanger. The CDU controls flow and temperature and separates the technical cooling loop serving the electronics from the facility loop. Heat crosses a heat exchanger between those loops without the two fluids necessarily mixing.
  5. The facility rejects or reuses the heat. Chillers, dry coolers, cooling towers or another site-specific system transfer heat to the outdoor environment. A heat-recovery system may send some of it to a building or industrial process where suitable infrastructure exists.
  6. Cooled technical coolant returns to the rack. The cycle repeats continuously while the GPUs run.

Microsoft’s 2025 liquid-cooling infographic illustrates one implementation in which pumps circulate coolant between server cold plates and heat-exchanger units (HXUs). HXU fans move air across the exchanger, while temperature, pressure, flow and leak sensors supervise operation. Other installations use different manifolds, exchanger arrangements or facility loops.

What a direct-to-chip GPU cooling system contains

Cold plate and thermal interface

The cold plate is machined or assembled with channels positioned over the GPU’s hottest areas. A thermal interface layer fills microscopic gaps between the package and plate so heat can cross with low resistance. Mounting pressure, flatness, channel geometry and the interface material are matched to the specific server and processor; a generic water block is not automatically compatible with a data-center GPU.

Coolant circuit and manifolds

Supply and return hoses connect each cold plate to rack manifolds. NVIDIA’s DGX GB rack guide describes coolant running up and down the rack through manifolds and through cold plates attached to CPUs and GPUs. The manifolds distribute flow among trays and provide connection points for isolation and service.

Pumps, controls and the CDU

Pumps provide the pressure needed to overcome channel, hose and heat-exchanger resistance. A CDU commonly combines pumps, valves, sensors, controls and a liquid-to-liquid heat exchanger. In NVIDIA’s DSX facilities reference design, facility water cools a separate technical-cooling-system loop in the CDU. The CDU can regulate inlet temperature and flow as rack load changes.

Heat-rejection equipment

The secondary facility system may use a dry cooler, chiller, cooling tower or another heat-rejection device. Dry coolers reject heat directly to outdoor air and can reduce or eliminate compressor refrigeration in climates and designs where the outdoor temperature is suitable. A chiller may still be required during hot weather or when the required coolant temperature is below what the local air can support.

Direct-to-chip is not immersion cooling

“Liquid cooling” covers different architectures. In direct-to-chip, also called cold-plate or liquid-to-chip cooling, coolant travels inside a plate attached to a heat source. The server electronics remain outside the fluid.

Immersion cooling places some or all of the server hardware in a non-conductive liquid. The fluid contacts component surfaces directly, so tanks, fluid compatibility, board materials, handling and service procedures differ substantially. A rack with GPU cold plates is not evidence that the entire server is immersed.

Why many liquid-cooled racks still need fans

Liquid is usually targeted at the components with the greatest heat flux. NVIDIA’s DGX GB rack guide says its CPU and GPU compute trays use liquid-cooled cold plates while networking and storage remain air cooled. Fans may also move air through an HXU or cool power supplies, memory, drives and other parts that lack a liquid cold plate.

Some newer platforms liquid-cool more components, but coverage is architecture-specific. Ask which devices have cold plates, which remain air cooled, and what airflow the rack still requires. “Liquid cooled” does not by itself mean a fanless server room.

Coolant temperature and composition are design parameters

There is no universal liquid-cooling temperature or recipe. NVIDIA’s 2026 description of a Rubin design specifies a 45°C rack inlet and a coolant mixture of 75% water and 25% propylene glycol. Those values belong to that described design; they are not a prescription for every GPU, cold plate or facility.

A warmer rack inlet can let a dry cooler reject heat without mechanical refrigeration when outdoor conditions and equipment sizing permit. NVIDIA also notes that hotter climates may require chillers on some days. Climate, altitude, humidity, heat-exchanger approach temperature, allowable device temperature and redundancy targets all affect the final set points.

Coolant chemistry must match the cold plate, seals, hoses, pumps and facility materials. Do not substitute automotive antifreeze, tap water or an aftermarket additive without the system maker’s written specification. A fluid that is electrically non-conductive, corrosion-controlled or freeze-protected for one design may damage another.

45°C rack inlet; 75% water/25% propylene glycol NVIDIA’s 2026 article describing a Rubin cooling design. It should not be generalized to other platforms.
2 MW cooling capacity at a 5°C approach temperature CoolIT CHx2000 figure reported by NVIDIA in 2025. It is a vendor figure reported in NVIDIA’s discussion, not independent testing.
More than 4,000 W targeted TDP CoolIT OMNI cold-plate figure reported by NVIDIA in 2025. It describes that product target, not generic cold-plate capability.
Up to 132 kW per rack Schneider Electric infrastructure capability reported by NVIDIA in 2025. Actual rack limits depend on the complete power and cooling design.
25% lower annual energy use, 75% less rack space and 30% smaller power footprint Vertiv reference-architecture figures reported by NVIDIA in 2025. They are vendor-reported comparisons whose baseline assumptions matter; they are not an apples-to-apples independent benchmark.

These figures illustrate the range of engineered systems. They do not establish that every high-power GPU captures 90% of its heat in liquid, that every rack needs 1.5 L/min/kW, or that every site can operate with warm water and no chiller.

Leak prevention, fluid quality and serviceability

Detecting and containing leaks

Liquid systems are designed around the possibility of a failed hose, fitting or cold plate. NVIDIA says its DGX GB rack system includes leak detection. Microsoft’s example shows leak-detection ropes, sensors and drip pans, along with quick disconnects. Automatic isolation, alarms and controlled shutdown can limit the amount of fluid released, but the exact response depends on the rack controller and facility procedures.

Keeping microchannels clean

GF Piping Systems’ 2026 direct-liquid-cooling brief warns that particles and other impurities can clog the small passages in cold plates. Water quality, filtration, materials compatibility and contamination control therefore matter as much as pump capacity. The correct limits and service intervals come from the equipment maker; there is no safe universal filter-change schedule or additive recommendation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Matching every interface

Cold plates, quick disconnects, hoses, seals, valves, pumps and heat exchangers must be rated for the specified pressure, temperature and chemistry. A connector that fits mechanically may still have an unsuitable material, flow restriction or pressure rating. Changing a server’s cold plate or coolant without validating the entire loop can void its operating envelope.

Designing for maintenance

Rack isolation valves, redundant pumps or CDUs, drain and fill points, access to manifolds and clear service procedures determine whether one failed component takes down a rack. NVIDIA’s DSX reference design describes N+1 CDU group operation and rack-level isolation; those are reference-design choices, not mandatory features in every deployment.

Common misconceptions and failure modes

“The coolant removes all the heat.”

It removes heat from the GPU into the technical loop. The CDU and facility equipment still have to reject that heat. If the outdoor heat-rejection system is undersized, the technical-loop temperature rises even though the cold plates and pumps are working.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“A higher flow rate always fixes overheating.”

Insufficient flow can increase the temperature rise across a plate, but excessive flow may exceed pump, hose or connector limits. Overheating can also result from poor thermal contact, blocked channels, a warm facility loop, a failed pump or an air-cooled component that was overlooked.

“Any clear liquid is safe.”

Appearance does not reveal conductivity, corrosion control, biological growth, freezing protection or material compatibility. Use only the specified coolant and water-quality controls.

“Liquid cooling means no room airflow.”

Networking, storage, power electronics and heat exchangers may still need fans. A room designed as if every watt leaves through liquid can exceed its air-cooling limits.

“A leak always destroys the server.”

Detection ropes, drip pans, quick disconnects, isolation and controlled shutdown can reduce damage, but they do not eliminate risk. Placement and response time matter, and a small fitting leak can still interrupt service.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What happens when temperatures or alarms rise

  1. Check whether the alert is for GPU temperature, coolant inlet temperature, return temperature, flow, pressure or a leak sensor; each points to a different fault.
  2. Verify pump and CDU status, valve position and the rack’s actual inlet and return readings rather than relying on a single GPU sensor.
  3. Inspect for a tripped leak detector, wetness in drip pans, disconnected quick couplings or a blocked manifold. Follow the site’s isolation procedure before opening any connection.
  4. Compare measured flow and pressure with the server and CDU limits. A normal pump command does not prove that coolant is reaching every cold plate.
  5. Check facility heat rejection and outdoor conditions. A dry cooler or chiller can lose capacity on a hot day even when the rack hardware is healthy.
  6. If fluid quality, contamination or a blocked microchannel is suspected, stop and use the manufacturer’s service process; do not flush an unknown chemical through the loop.

Where liquid cooling fits in high-power GPU design

As accelerator power and rack density rise, direct-to-chip cooling moves the heat-transfer bottleneck close to the silicon and reduces the volume of air that would otherwise have to pass through the server. Its benefits depend on an entire chain: a properly mounted cold plate, clean compatible coolant, stable pumps and manifolds, a correctly sized CDU, monitoring and a facility able to reject the heat in local climate conditions.

The practical question is therefore not simply whether a GPU is “liquid cooled.” It is which heat sources use liquid, how the loops are separated, what temperatures and flows are validated, what remains air cooled, and how the site detects and services faults. Those details determine reliability, water use, energy consumption and achievable rack density.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can liquid cooling be added to any existing GPU server?

Not safely by default. The GPU package, mounting hardware, cold plate, connectors, coolant chemistry, pressure, flow and server warranty must all be validated as one design. A retrofit may also require rack manifolds, a CDU and facility heat-rejection capacity.

Does a warmer coolant inlet damage the GPU?

Not if the complete platform is designed and validated for it. NVIDIA’s Rubin example uses a 45°C rack inlet, but that set point is specific to the described design. Other GPUs have different allowable temperatures and control limits.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why can a liquid-cooled rack still be noisy?

Fans may cool networking, storage, memory, power components or an HXU. Pump and facility equipment also produce sound, so liquid cooling reduces some airflow demand rather than guaranteeing a silent rack.

Is a CDU the same as a chiller?

No. A CDU manages the technical loop and transfers heat to a facility loop. A chiller is one possible facility heat-rejection device; a dry cooler, cooling tower or heat-recovery system may be used instead.
